First hilly stage in Japan, and it’s a quite hard one that could see big gaps between riders, or even a reduced sprint, because the stages finishes in a flat section after the final climb/downhill. 156 kms between Atami and Ito, so not a really long stage, anyway home hero Kinoshita is the main favourite for the win today, with McCarthy, Betancourt and Kwiatkowski as the biggest threats
With a Cat.3 KoM (like everyone on this stage) so close to the start (just 8 kms), a breakaway couldn’t be formed before it, and it that climb, an attack for the points of Hugh Carthy would be enough for the young rider to get the points. Mannion and Alizadeh got the other points
Carthy would stop and go back to the bunch, but then another Ayubowan! rider would attack; Rajapakshage. He would get 6 points in the second climb of the day, followed by Schlegel and Carthy, who jumped out of the bunch to fight for points
With Wahyudi also joining them, we have now a breakaway of 4 riders. Really interesting that a team with a GC favourite like Monsalve sends two riders into the breakaway, and the race leader team sends one too (though Chavanne won’t last in that jersey)
Carthy, Rajpakshage
Wahyudi
Schlegel
Carthy would be again first in all three next climbs, with only Wahyudi being able to follow his pace, as both Rajpakshage and Schlegel would be dropped and caught by the bunch in the second pass of Shimotaga, the climb that is featured 3 times in the stage, including the decisive final pass, just 5-6 kms away from the finish line.
Meanwhile, in the bunch the pace has never been slow, while also never allowing Carthy a gap higher than 2 minutes
Breakaway over with 45 kms to go! Still a long distance to the finish, and without a breakaway to chase, what will happen now in the bunch?
Xero and Iberia want a high-paced stage, and its consequences could be quickly seen in the bunch, that started to lose some riders that aren’t really good in the hills, like Brandle, Duarte, Rolland, Ratiy, and more importantly, Henao, who could be considered an outsider should he overperform in the hills, and then with the Mt Fuji TT in his favour, get into a decent GC result. Clearly not worked for him
Race leader Chavanne couldn’t reach the top of Mt Kurotake, the penultimate climb of the day, just 30 kms away from the finish, and weirdly, pretty much all Sauber team dropped back to help him, including Zoidl, who should be their real leader. Now just around 80 riders in the bunch, where at some point in this climb it looked like Ayubowan was aiming for a big split, but probably decided against because of the flat section before Shimotaga
Koshevoy has been riding hard in the front of the bunch for around 30 kms, surely trying that no one gets real rest, while also heavily increasing gaps to groups further down the road
Just 10 kms to go and the riders are already starting Shimotaga. The pace is really high, as Koshevoy has finally stepped aside and other teams are setting pace now. Attacks from the favourites should come really soon, at least if those attacks are looking for a great GC outcome, instead of just stage win battle
There goes McCarthy, in the final 2 kms of the climb! And he got no response to his massive attack!
Inside of the final km of the climb, finally some counter attacks, as Moazemi goes together with Kinoshita, and a bit behind it’s Nepomyanschiy with Kwiatkowski, while also looks like Roglic, Izagirre and Roche are trying to get away from the bunch too. McCarthy’s gap is quite good, and might be enough for the stage win, 24 seconds!
6 kms to go! McCarthy’s lead has been reduced to 20 seconds, as Kinoshita is going into the downhill as a mad-man, with Moazemi too scared to properly follow his wheel. Kwiatkowski is 20 seconds further behind, while the bunch, with the rest of favourites, is almost 50 seconds behind McCarthy now
Just 3 kms to go and the duo of Kinoshita and Moazemi is about to catch McCarthy, but wait, Kinoshita’s effort are coming back to him now, and is struggling now to close the gap!
McCarthy enters the final km with a 10-second gap to Kinoshita and Moazemi, who is not giving any relays to Kinoshita, smart decision thinking that Denifl is his leader, and 10 further to Kwiatkowski. The bunch is now 50 seconds behind McCarthy and out of any stage win chances
And now it’s for Moazemi to overtake Kinoshita and steal those bonus seconds from him in the sprint, once the Japanese might be too tired to put a good sprint for the second place...
... as obviously Jay McCarthy takes the win in Ito!
As expected, Moazemi beats Kinoshita in the sprint for second place, though both lose 14 seconds to the winner today
Kwiatkowski finishes fourth, 29 seconds behind McCarthy
Kuboki leads the bunch home, that will lose 53 seconds to McCarthy today, winning the sprint ahead of Roche, Monsalve, Roux, Roglic and Gidich
McCarthy not only wins the stage, but becomes the new race leader, 16 seconds ahead of Moazemi, 19 of Kinoshita, 28 of Kwiatkowski and 56/57 to Meintjes, Monsalve and Denifl, the best climbers that finished on the bunch today.
The toughness of the stage made some splits in the final kms, so only 31 riders finished on Kuboki’s group.
Izagirre, Tvetcov (+1’32), Bennett (+1’50), Ji (+4’33), Henao (+8’15) are the big lossers of today’s stage
