Final stage of the race, with 146 kms between Lambarene and Kango. It’s the flattest stage of the race, so unless like yesterday, when the race was blown apart because of the huracan-like winds, the stage should calmly finish in a mass sprint
In the GC battle it’s the final chance to take away from Jens Keukeleire. There are 2 (maybe 3) riders that have a shot at the GC lead. Sascha Modolo is just 8 seconds behind Keukeleire, though he’s the only of the four riders in contention that still hasn’t won a stage in the race. Jacopo Guarnieri is 17 seconds back and Matti Manninen, the rider that won yesterday, is 21 seconds behind the Belgian.
7 riders got in the breakaway. No one of them had collected any KoM point in the race, so this gives Plucinski the win in this classification
Ambrose
Despuntsag
Kukrle
Abelouache
Puccioni
Van der Ploeg
Mahdar
Despuntsag would be the first to reach the summit of the first climb of the day, though there was no sprint for it. Ambrose and Mahdar would be next
And in the second climb it was Mahdar ahead of Van der Ploeg and Abelouache. I guess these riders don’t like to get the points for finishing third in KoM...
With 10 kms to go, the breakaway still had one minute over the bunch, but they had lost a member, as Puccioni couldn’t stay with that pace
The breakaway is likely to get away with the win, and basically give the GC win to Keukeleire.
Abelouache makes an attak with 5 kms to go...
... and no one can follow the Wiesenhof rider, who goes free for the stage win today
Mahdar has attacked from the breakaway, and with 2 kms to go, is about to catch Abelouache. The bunch is still 50 seconds behind the leaders, with the rest of the breakaway in the middle
Final km for the leading duo. Mahdar has taken the lead, but Abelouache is now starting his sprint
In the bunch, the sprint trains are ready to fight for ¿third place? But it’s weird how neither Keukeleire or Guarnieri are nowhere to be seen in the first places of the group. Anyway, Modolo isn’t greatly placed, as he couldn’t get into any of the three trains “available” (Rothaus, Sauber, ENI). At least Manninen is on Salleh’s wheel
After a dramatic sprint, the win goes for Wiesienhof and Essaid Abelouache!
Mahdar has to settle for second
Van Heerden wins the sprint in the bunch for the third place, followed by Salleh and Manninen.
Matthews, Nizzolo, King, Vanderaerden and Aregger complete the Top10 of the stage
So Jens Keukeleire is the winner of 2018 La Tropicale Amissa Bongo. Amazing result for GCN.
A week of finishing second ends for Sascha Modolo and his team. The win is still elusive to them, but they can’t be unhappy with how the race has gone for the team
Matti Manninen jumps into the GC podium after his fifth place today. A bad day in S3 might have costed him a GC win, but a podium + stage win is a great result nontheless.
Another disapponting race for the top sprinter in the division, as Jacopo Guarnieri has to settle for fourth place in GC, after really only sprinting two days and a third that he made a big comeback after not caring about positioning
A consistent race for Giacomo Nizzolo, which is rewarded with the fifth place
Keukeleire makes the double with the Points Jersey, which was kinda expected to go to the race winner. Modolo finishes just 3 points behind the Belgian, with Manninen overtaking Guarnieri here too for the third place
Gregor Katrasnik wins the U25 Jersey for Equinor, which gives the team even more points from this race
Leszek Plucinski won the KoM jersey for Banco de Bogota, who had King finishing sixth in GC, plus this jersey, making it a good race for the team
And an extra prize for Equinor, as they win the Teams standings, maybe sweeting the miss of a win?
So this is all from Gabon. An interesting race for the CT sprinters, with an epic stage in day 4 and some great sprint for the more punchy sprinters. See you next year
