Fourth stage of the race, only two to go, and finally it looks there’s a stage completely flat in its late part. It doesn’t mean it’s flat for all-day, as the first part is rather bumpy, including 2 Cat.4 climbs
Keukeleire leads the race with 10 seconds over Modolo, 14 over Matthews and 25 over Guarnieri, the winner yesterday. But today the wind could change everything, as in the early part of the stage, the riders are suffering winds of around 70 km/h
Despite this, 6 brave riders went into the attack from the very first kms
Mollema
Reddish
Puccioni
Reijnen
Rabitsch
Gonzalez Cortes
Surprisingly, no one tried to go for the KoM points in the first climb, with Mollema taking 5 points because he was relaying in that moment. Rabitsch and Gonzalez Cortes would take the other points in the climb.
Before this, Gonzalez Cortes won the first sprint of the day, from Reddish and Reijnen
And in the second climb it was Gonzalez Cortes taking the five points, from Reijnen and Rabitsch.
The gap with 100 kms to go was 4 minutes, as the super high wind made the sprinter’s team more careful about gaps
Reijnen wins the second sprint, with Gonzalez Cortes and Mollema getting the other bonus seconds. Reijnen doesn’t really care about these seconds, as he lost time in one stage, but
And the wind was obviously going to do a lot of damage in the bunch, as with 30 kms to go, only 55 riders remain in the first group, with 30 riders being “close” behind including Thorsen, Carsi, Wippert, Vanderaerden or Liepins
Reijnen would win all the remaining sprint, and with the high pace and the wind, eventually he would drop everyone of the breakaway riders to stay alone with over 20 kms to go. In the bunch, riders just keep getting dropped, with only 50 left now there
With 16 kms to go, the bunch only has 40 riders on it, though other 30-40 riders previously mentioned are 1 minute behind. The latest dropped riders are Tewelde or Manan.
Reijnen still has 50 seconds on the bunch, who has slowed down a little lately, as some teams are running out of domestiques to pull
10 kms for Reijnen, who still looks confortable and has even increased his gap to the bunch to 1’15
Sauber is using Aregger quite early, with still 6 kms to go, but his pace has made another big split in the bunch, so only 19 riders are left on it
Aregger, Salleh
Keukeleire, Haddi, McLay
Modolo, Ratto, Tatrasnik
Guarnieri, Feillu, Kreder
Nizzolo
Sakala, Meersman
King
Manninen, Aaltio
Vanoverschelde
Thill
So big news as Michael Matthews, third in GC, has been dropped, together with Van Heerden
Reijnen has a 25-second gap with less than 5 kms to go. He’s done a great effort so far, but probably holding off the sprinter will be too much for him
And the gap increases to almost 40 seconds with 2,5 kms to go, as Aregger is done. That’s the moment Modolo launches a very long sprint
Modolo overtakes Reijnen under the final km kit, once Nizzolo dropped out of his wheel.
Way behind, Keukeleire, Guarnieri, Manninen and King are the only ones sprinting, as everyone else is so tired to do it
And obviously Modolo miss-timed his sprint, as with 700 metres to go, not only he’s getting caught by the storming Manninen and Guarnieri (Keukeleire, Nizzolo and King have started to fade), but Reijnen has overtaken him also with his very little energies left
Reijnen hold the lead until the final 300 metres, when finally Manninen and Guarnieri overtook the American. The Finnish looks like he’ll win, given he came from the Italian’s slipstream and is holding more speed right now
And Matti Manninen wins in Mouila! Fantastic win for the Finnish, actually only his first “regular” ever win (he won the 2015 Finnish NC)!
Second place for Guarnieri, who would have really benefitted from a win today to really enter the GC fight into the final stage
Reijnen gets an incredible third, after his solo ride in the final 30 kms, with Modolo taking an important fourth place place from Keukeleire, on the Belgian worst place of the race so far
King, Sakala and Nizzolo completed the Top8, and most likely, they will be the only riders to finish in the winner’s time
+42 for a group led by Salleh and Ratto, which also included Vanoverschelde, Aregger, Carsi, Wippert or Katrasnik, the U25 leader
+1’54 for the next group, led by Van Heerden and Matthews, who loses his great GC place
Quite an amazing stage that saw Matti Manninen get his first proper win of his career.
So now we have quite a different GC than before the stage.
Well, Jens Keukeleire still leads as he’s done every day of the race, but his lead has been narrowed to just 8 seconds over Modolo. Guarnieri is up to third, 17 seconds behind, and kinda needs a miracle tomorrow to win the GC, or basically Keukeleire to not perform at all tomorrow.
A real miracle would be needed for Manninen, as he’s 21 seconds behind the GC leader. Nizzolo in fifth (+37), King is 6th (+46) and Sakala rises to 7th (+1’02)
