Third stage of the race, and while looking much easier than the previous two for the sprinters, that little climb in the last 10 kms could do some damage to the less punchy sprinters.
So again Keukeleire and Modolo are the favourites. The Belgian is the race leader, tied with Matthews, the winner yesterday, while Modolo has finished second in both stages, and is really looking for a stage win here
Five riders would join the breakaway today, despite no KoM points in offer
Beyer
Mendes
Van der Ploeg
Reddish
Yorshuwan
Mendes would win the first sprint, after the best sprinter of the group, Beyer, didn’t even care about sprinting. Van der Ploeg and Reddish would take the other Top3 places
And it would be Yordshuwan winning the second sprint, ahead of Mendes and Van der Ploeg
The gap to the bunch was 3’30 with 60 kms to go, as for the first time in the race, Delvaux was seen working in the front of the peloton. Maybe finally they’ll setup a train for Guarnieri?
12 kms to go and the riders are entering the uncategorised climb with a heavy tail-wind that really helps the breakaway
And Mendes and Van der Ploeg decides to attack in order to exploit the wind and the 1’10 gap that they had to the bunch
With 8 kms to go, the gap was reduced to 37 seconds, and in that moment, Mendes dropped Van der Ploeg to do a solo ride
Now into a descent before the roads kicks up again in the final 2 kms, Mendes holds a 15-second gap over Van der Ploeg and 40 seconds over the bunch, where sprint trains are starting to be formed
Left Weiss, Aregger
Center: Feillu, Kreder, Guarnieri, Carsi, Ratto, Mundle
Right-Center: Ngandomba, McLay, Haddi, Keukeleire, Manninen, Vanoverschelde, Nizzolo, Modolo
Right: Vichot, Salleh, Matthews, Van Heerden
´
Van der Ploeg is about to be caught, but Mendes still holds 35 seconds with 1,5 kms to go. The Rothaus rider doesn’t have the win secured yet, but has a big chance of getting away with the win
Delvaux finally made a train for Guarnieri, so Kreder enters the final km in the first place of the group, with his leader on his wheel.
At his left side, Aregger was supoused to leadout Salleh, but the Malaysian is nowhere close to his wheel. Instead, it’s Haddi with Keukeleire. A bit behind these riders, Nizzolo has passed a fading Carsi, with Manninen, Modolo, Salleh, King and Matthews even more behind
With 600 metres to go, Guarnieri starts his sprint, in the very moment that Mendes is caught. Keukeleire has launched his sprint a bit earlier and now he’s going at full speed. Nizzolo is right behind the leaders, as Aregger and Kreder are still going strong and maybe they can fight for a good result for themselves.
Guarnieri finally takes the lead with 300 metres to go, but Keukeleire and Nizzolo haven’t give up yet. Aregger, Haddi and Kreder are fading now, so King and Modolo can take a big place today
And Jacopo Guarnieri wins in Oyem the third stage of Tropicale Amissa Bongo! The Italian is finally showing up in the race, and everyone should fear him now
Keukeleire takes second place to increase his GC lead, with Nizzolo closing the podium
Modolo gets fourth place to stay close to Keukeleire in GC, with Aregger surprisingly holding to a Top5, ahead of King and Salleh
Matthews makes a decent comeback to get 8th place and reduce his losses, with Kreder taking another Top10 for Delvaux after Guarnieri’s win, and Van Heerden’s late kick giving him the final spot in the Top10
It’s been a worrying issue for Delvaux all season, that Guarnieri despite being the best sprinter by far in this level, usually never gets a sprint train, leading to disappointing result in a lot of CT races so far this season, but obviously if the team got it together, the Italian is going to deliver
Keukeleire now leads the GC alone, with 10 seconds over Modolo, 14 over Matthews and 25 over Guarnieri, who climbs to 4th and still has a shot at the GC win if he can deliver again in the final 2 stages
