Second stage of the race, and surely the most important one. You can’t win the race today, but being so tough for a flat stage, you can definitely lose the race here.

A rider like Sascha Modolo should be the top favourite, with his climbing skills favoring him over the rest of sprinters. Yesterday Modolo lost the win literally on the finish line against Jens Keukeleire, the other big favourite for today’s stage, and will be seeking for revenge and finally give Equinor its maiden win in the MG

Despite big points for the KoM jersey being offered today, only 2 riders decided to join the breakaway

Plucinski
Mathis

Some others tried, but couldn’t get away from the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-001.jpg

Plucinski would win the first sprint, but more interesting was the sprint for the final bonus second in the bunch, as Wippert early sprint would surprise Salleh, with the Dutch taking that second for him

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-002.jpg

In the main climb of the day, a Cat.2, Plucinski would easily get the big points, and securing the KoM jersey for him in the process. Mathis isn’t a great rival up a climb

The remaining points would go to domestiques of the main sprinter, with Henttala, Hodeg and Gibbons getting points

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-003.jpg

And in the second climb, a Cat.4, Plucinski again would be first without any troubles

And this time it would Omarsson getting the final KoM point of the day

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-004.jpg

In the second and last intermediate sprint, Wippert would take again the lonely bonus second, with Salleh and Carsi not able to outsprint the Rothaus rider.

In this point, with less than 50 kms to go, the breakaway only had 2 minutes of advantage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-005.jpg

The gap would be down to 40 seconds with 20 kms to go, and in that moment Plucinski would attack Mathis and leave him behind

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-006.jpg

He was never a real threat, but the Pole rider managed to stay ahead until the 5-km kit, when the pace of GCN, Valio and Equinor, the three team that were dominating the first places in the bunch, was too much for him

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-007.jpg

Less than 2 kms to go, and Valio has managed to stay in the lead, with Liepins leading-out Manninen. Keukeleire is trying to follow the Finnish rider, but kinda lost his wheel after the final corner.

Habtom and Modolo are going next to Valio riders, with the Italian in a perfect position to improve on yesterday’s second place, though Nizzolo, King and Salleh are following his train. Carsi has already started his sprint in the right side, while Wippert does the same in the left side

Guarnieri has been caught mis-placed again, and will have a hard time catching up to the front

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-008.jpg

Final km and Liepins has got out of the way, with Manninen starting now his sprint. But at the moment it’s Wippert the one is the first place. It looks like Keukeleire, Carsi and Matthews are the main contenders right now, with Modolo and Nizzolo having lost a bit of ground after Habtom suffered more with the uphill zone

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-009.jpg

With 500 metres to go, Manninen has taken the lead from Wippert, who is heavily fading, like Carsi. But the Finnish doesn’t have a easy lead, as Keukeleire, Matthews and Modolo are coming faster and are really close to him

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-010.jpg

Manninen couldn’t stay in the lead, and drops to fourth, as with 100 metres to go, it’s a duel between Keukeleire and Matthews for the win, with Modolo in third place

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-011.jpg

And it’s Michael Matthews who wins in Mouila the second stage of La Tropicale Amissa Bongo!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-012.jpg

And it was really a very close decision, as Modolo came with a great speed in the final metres, and just fell short of taking the win, as the Italian has to settle for yet another second place, which means that Keukeleire drops to third.

Manninen finishes fourth, with Nizzolo fifth

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-013.jpg

Salleh beats King in the finish line to take sixth place, with Wippert, Aregger and Carsi closing the Top10, of which Guarnieri felt short one place, but it wasn’t a close call for that place

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/ltab/ltab-2-014.jpg

Michael Matthews gets one step closer to the top of the CT All-Time Wins List, as he’s now only 2 wins behind the leader, Simon Geschke, after getting his 12th win in this level.

The only downside is that despite having tied Jens Keukeleire for the lead of the race, the jury has decided that Keukeleire stays with the leader’s jersey for one more day. Sascha Modolo is just 4 seconds behind in third place, in a GC that only Manninen is within a stage distance of the leader, as the same three riders finished in the podium in both stages (and it was almost the same four in the Top4, but Manninen only finished 5th in S1)
