First stage in Gabon between Kambo and Lambarene, and it’s a very very long one. 231 kms will have to do the riders today, seeking for that stage win and the first leader jersey of the race.
Also, the stage should be quite hard for some sprinters, who don’t manage too well the uphill roads, and while history has shown that this stage can be won by flatty-sprinters, like Salleh did in 2016, riders like Jens Keukeleire or Sascha Modolo could surprise the big favourite that obviously is Jacopo Guarnieri. Guarnieri has a sprint train that is probably more suited to the race than him
After a few not succesfull attacks, three riders would be able to form the breakaway
Mancuso
Despuntsag
Partridge
Mancuso would win the first intermediate sprint, ahead of Partridge, with Despuntsag coming in third
Mancuso would end up winning all three sprints, but the latter two would have Despuntsag in second place ahead of Partridge.
Their gap with 100 kms to go is 6’30
The breakaway looks like it’ll be caught really soon, as with 10 kms to go they only hold a 30-second gap
At the end, they lasted until 4 kms to go, as the bunch led by Rothaus riders starts to prepare for the sprint
The breakaway riders being caught have provoked some caos, as it allowed for 3 Rothaus to have a little gap over the rest of the bunch. The problem? That Van Heerden was left behind, as the three riders are Minnard, Mollema and Wippert
Manan, Aregger and Salleh are building a train in the left side of the road, while Thorsen and Van Heerden are trying to close the gap to Rothaus’ riders in front by themselves
Within the first 15-20 places there are other sprinters like Vanoverschelde, McLay, Modolo, Keukeleire, Carsi, Nizzolo, Matthews, King, Tewelde, and even behind, Guarnieri and Manninen who are entering the sprint in an horrible position
Absolute caos in the sprint. With 1,5 kms to go, Thorsen has hit the front, with Vanoverschelde and Modolo on his wheel. Wippert is sprinting on his own in the centre of the road. GCN is bringing Keukeleire to the front in the right side, with Matthews smartling following his wheel
More behind there are riders like Carsi, Nizzolo, Salleh (with his failing train), Manninen or Guardini
The riders are going down the Flamme Rouge, as it’s Vanoverschelde in the lead after Thorsen blew up. Modolo is perfectly following his wheel, waiting for his distance to sprint, and maybe give his team the first win in his history. Wippert is following closely, while Keukeleire is going past Thorsen now and launching his sprint, with Matthews on his wheel, and Carsi and Nizzolo on his side
Aregger and Van Heerden are going for the left side, with Salleh a few metres behind. And next to them, it’s King, with Tewelde, Manninen and Guarnier following
Modolo takes the lead with 700 metres as Vanoverschelde clearly timed badly his sprint. But the Italian is being hunted down by sprinters like Carsi or Keukeleire, while way more behind, Guarnieri and Manninen are gaining a lot of places
300 metres to go! And everyone is having troubles to keep the high speed till the very end. Modolo still holds a little gap over Keukeleire, with Carsi and Matthews seemingly fighting for third place, but watch out Manninen and Guarnieri, who are still way faster than everyone else, and same goes for Salleh
It’s a photo-finish decision for the winner in Lambarene! Has Modolo managed to hold the first place in order to give his team the first win of his 2-year history? Did Keukeleire recover the distance to the Italian to get his first win of the year?
What we know is that Matthews has gotten third place, with Carsi fourth, and the “comebackers” Manninen and Guarnieri finishing 5th and 6th.
Vanoverschelde, Salleh, Nizzolo and Wippert would get the remaining places that award bonus seconds
And the winner is Jens Keukeleire! Amazing effort from the GCN rider to overtake in the last 10 metres Modolo, who is clearly upset about the result. At least the Italian gets 18 bonus seconds that will really help in the GC battle.
Obviously Keukeleire is the first leader of the race, proving why he was the main favourite for this first stage
