Another custom continental team Portuguese-based (I spent one year of my life in Lisbon and I'm still in love with Portugal ). Season played: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 (until Tour de France). This was my longest and "most loved" story, that I telled from september 2013 to september 2017.
In the last few years I started another couple of stories on PCM_ITA with Pcm 2017 and Pcm 2018, but that forum, unfortunately, is almost "died" so I lost my commitment to it. And that's the why I decided to try another time to tella a story, but on PCM Daily.
Unfortunately, my english is quite poor, but I'll try to do my best. See you!
If you say Molteni to any ancient suiveur, he will tell you about Eddy Merckx. The Cannibal rode with these colors from 1971 to 1976, winning three times both Giro d'Italia and Tour de France, one Vuelta a España in 1973, four Milano-Sanremo and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, one Ronde van Vlaanderen, one Paris-Roubaix and two Giro di Lombardia. An amount of victories (246 with this shirt) which would make Merckx the greatest of all time regardless of all other triumphs achieved in the first part of his huge carreer.

But Molteni was not only Eddy Merckx: from 1958 to 1976, this italian team based in Arcore, a small town in the suburbs of Milan, won 663 races: 208 in Italy and 455 abroad, thanks to the likes of Gianni Motta, Rudi Altig, Michele Dancelli, Davide Boifava, Marino Basso, Roger Swerts and Joseph Bruyère between others.
These are just the greatest achievements along the years: 57 stages and 4 overall victories at Giro d'Italia (Motta in 1966 in addition to Merckx's hattrick), 37 stages and 3 overalls at Tour de France, 8 stages and 1 overall at Vuelta a España (well, the Cannibal achieved the most part of this, I have to admit it), 5 Milano-Sanremo (Dancelli in 1970 before of the poker served by Cannibal), 1 Ronde van Vlaanderen, 1 Paris-Roubaix (other Merckx's staff), 5 Liège-Bastogne-Liège (with Bruyère's win in 1976 at the end of Eddy's era) and 3 Giro di Lombardia (again Motta, in 1964, before Merckx's double).

The team retired from peloton at the end of 1976. Moreover, the Molteni company itself collapsed a few years later, along with the hope of a comeback in the sports.
But.
Last october Mario Molteni - son of Ambrogio, the one who created that iconic team half a century ago - sponsored the participation at the Six Days of London of a couple of riders - Adam Blythe and Jonathan Dibben - in a charity operation finalized to support free agent riders searching for a new contract: on that occasion, for the first time in almost 43 years, mythical Molteni's colours reappeared in the sport.
Aim: on the short term, to build a custom team based exclusively on free agents at the day that I started (meanwhile, some of them found a team in reality): as the brand Molteni doesn't exist anymore, it will be a sort of advisor in order to find a new title sponsor in the next few years, targetting the rebuilding of an Italian-based World Tour team. Level: extreme. Database: PCMWorld DB updated to 2019 season.
As I always tried to tell stories as realistic as possible, I'll add on the db national teams participating to several races like in reality, such as UniSA at Down Under, colombian national team at Oro y Paz or swiss national team at Tour de Suisse, etc; real season programs for the main GT contenders, updated routes for the main races and edit transfer market of other teams (not mine market, of course) in order to mantain realistic rosters for all WT and Pro Teams, at least.

Mario Molteni has started to enjoy that: after the clamorous success of the camoscionere shirts at the Six Days of London, the son of Ambrogio - the mythical owner and director of old Molteni - decided to rebuild the team through the money granted by family Foundation.
"Molteni manifacture doesn't exist anymore, but Molteni's love for cycling does, and so, here we are", he told to journalists appeared at the press conference summoned in Arcore to announce the comeback of one of the most iconic teams in cycling history.
"Thanks to our Foundation and a few major donors, along with the resources we managed to find on an open crowdfunding, we are able to announce the establishment of a new cycling team which has already received by Uci a Pro Continental license and will compete in 2019 season".
The first rider to embrace Molteni's project was the same Jonathan Dibben who rode London Six Days with Adam Blythe, that meanwhile was signed by Lotto-Soudal. Dibben, member of British pursuit national team, will be joined by a small but consistend British troop, including compatriots Mark Christian, Mark McNally, former World Tour rider Scott Thwaites and the promising 20-years-old sprinter Ethan Hayter.
English-speaking is also the 26-years-old Brendan Canty, who will lead the team in the hills classic and in stage races, searching for a revenge after his unlucky experience at Jonathan Vaughters' Education First. In a Molteni-branded team can not miss belgian riders, and the choice fell on Maxime Farazijn, the cyclo-cross specialist Laurens Sweeck, on the continental-level sprinter Jens Adams and on the only 19-years-old Mauri Vansevenant.

Russians are also present with three riders: the experienced Maxim Belkov, Alexander Foliforov - both of them with a stage win at Giro d'Italia, in 2013 and 2016 respectively - and the controversial 23-years-old Matvey Mamikin, a fragile talent that must be recovered after the abrupt end of his previous contract with Burgos-BH. Mamykin will benefit, for sure, of the experience brought to the team by 35-years-old Andriy Grivko, who accepted Molteni offer to continue riding for a season more, instead of jump on Astana's car as directeur sportif.
Spaniard Miguel Ángel Ballesteros and eritrean Mekseb Debesay, a good climber, complete the foreign contingent of a roster based on italian riders, with former silver medalist at under 23 worlds Simone Ponzi as most blazoned presence and designed leader for national classics. Similar skills also for Marco Tizza and Nicola Gaffurini, both quite fast and resistent on shirt climbs, while Luca Chirico and Michele Gazzara can be considered basically as climbers.

Jacopo Mosca won points classification at 2018 Tirreno-Adriatico, but this wasn't enough to gain a contract extension with Wilier, so he also will restart from Molteni, as well as Simone Antonini needs to revitalize his carreer after sever years spent at Wany.
Enrico Salvador is also on the roster, but the last name of the 26 settled in the team is also the most controversial: Andrea Tafi, the 52-years-old that struggled all the winter to sign a professional contract with the aim to return at Paris-Roubaix 20 years after his win in 1999. No one World Team offered him a chance, so last opportunity was to sign for Molteni and hope in a wild card.

Also other cycling legends such as Johan Museeuw and Juan Antonio Flecha joined Molteni project as directeur sportifs, even if the 41-years-old Flecha is younger by far than Tafi.

Not an easy outset for our guys, against a lot of the best riders in the world: Luca Chirico and Miguel Ángel Ballesteros will have the ungrateful task to compete against the likes of Quintana, Alaphilippe, Carapaz, Wellens, Benoot, Oomen, Kreuziger for GC, but even more diffucult will be the challenge four our spinter, Jens Adams, to defeat a giant like Fernando Gaviria, who always dominated in Argentina, or also a veteran like Cavendish.

A very interesting line-up, composed by our all-british lead out train for baby sprinter Ethan Hayter, who will be supported by compatriots McNally, Dibben and Thwaites, with Dibben also having personal ambitions for the prologue in Melbourne. Brendan Canty looks for a stage win or a top 3 in the general classification, where rivals are not a lot: Sergio Luis Henao seems the only contender hors categorie, but also Peter Sagan will be a threat in all fields, included GC, if he would manage to keep the wheels on the mountaintop finish of Falls Creek.

The Australian national championships are the opportunity to show-off our shirt, thanks to Brendan Canty who will fight for a top ten, even if in a race like this, the only thing to count is victory. Anyway, here it is the shirt, made by Stylus:
And now, let's talk about race, starting by the route the riders are expected to do, that is the classic Ballarat circuit with the hill of Mount Bunyniong Road:
On the penultimate lap peloton splits and remains in the lead a small group of ten riders, with all the most expected guys out there. Also Brendan Canty makes the cut, and on the last climb to Mount Bunyniong tries to go away, but he is followed by Richie Porte, Robert Power and Nathan Haas, with the other chasers just five seconds back.
[img-r]https://i.imgur.com/uL6g1lv.png[/img-r]At the top of the hill, the ten are all together again and Canty, who knows to be beaten in a sprint, goes for an ultimate attack with 2 km to go, but it doesn't work. The sprint is won by the only pure sprinter survived, Caleb Ewan, who celebrates in the best way his debut with the Lotto-Soudal jersey, becoming the new australian national champion. Nathan Haas of Katusha is in second and Jay McCarthy of Bora in third; Brendan Canty finishes ninth, but without regrets.

Meanwhile in New Zealand Thomas Scully (Education First) conquers the road title and Dylan Kennett (St. George) the time trial.

Australian national championships - Time trial full standing
The australian summer goes on with the most expected event, Santos Tour Down Under, that also open World Tour 2019. Molteni is not invited, but I'll try to update you about all major races in the season.
As I already told you, for Down Under I edited the savegame in order to have the real startlist, so the battle for the final win, like in real life, will concern Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo), Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott), Wout Poels (Team Sky), Rohan Dennis (Bahrain-Merida), Michael Woods (Education First), Patrick Bevin (CCC Team), Luis Leon Sánchez (Astana) and, why not, also Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) that for sure will be one of the best sprinters in the peloton, alongside Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-Quick Step) and new australian champion Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal).
And now, let's have a look at the route, with the arrival at Willunga Hill for the first time set as finale stage:
Well: main riders have been announced, route has been presented, what we have to do now is just to discover how the things have gone.
Here we are again, for the first official race of Molteni's comeback season: we are in Argentina to compete at Vuelta a San Juan Internacional against some of the best riders in the world. That's are the most important cyclists registered by each team:

Unexpected results from the time trial, won by Michael Matthews ahead of a great Maxim Belkov, who becomes new Molteni's leader for GC, as designated captain Luca Chirico lost 1:18. Belkov is not a climber, but now is worth supporting him on the long ascent to Alto Colorado, which will decide the race, with the hope of snatch a place in the final top ten. Meanwhile, thanks to a good effort in the time trial and another stage win the next day in San Martín, Fernando Gaviria keeps the jersey ahead of the mountains.

La Tropicale continues to offer arrivals decided by a sprint between a selected group of riders: in Franceville Léo Vincent outsprints cyclocross phenomenon Mathieu Van der Poel as Arthur Vichot retains the jersey, but in Koulamatour Maurits Lammertink makes the double, taking the stage and the first place in GC. Molteni places Grivko in 5th place on the 2ns stage, and Debesay in 7th the next day. Situation still very open in the general classification.

The truth stage with uphill finish to Alto Colorado sees the victory of Tiesj Benoot (Lotto-Soudal) who benefits of the team play with Tim Wellens to outdistance Roman Kreuziger and Julian Alaphilippe, securing the lead in the GC. Molteni's Maxim Belkov keeps it as hard as possible finish 20th at 3:04, better than Nairo Quintana who's a 24th at 3:38: the russian is now 15th in the GC a 2:52.

First win in a stage race for Tiesj Benoot (Lotto-Soudal)
In the last act of Vuelta a San Juan Molteni doens't go beyond the 23th place of Jacopo Mosca, but the balance of the race was already abundantly positive after the amazing win of Jens Adams in Pocito. In the GC, Maxim Belkov finish in 15th place 2:52 far from Benoot.
