Stage 3 - Fribourg > Fribourg Next flat but also "hillyish" stage, that features a tricky parcours around Fribourg. Four mountain sprints and six climbs, pure sprinters like Salleh may struggle more than they did yesterday.
Boivin, however, should love the look of the profile and after delivering a stage win yesterday, he has to be considered a top favorite for today. Also Aregger and Kuboki should fancy their chances against Appollonio, Von Hoff or Petit (who struggled yesterday) and Moser (who did not show up yesterday)..
A group of 7 riders went clear right from the start of the stage:
Lindau
Hindley
Zmorka (13th GC + 0.13, 4th KoM 6pts)
Vermeulen
Barth
Molano
Kanepejs (2nd KoM 10pts)
Kanepejs easily takes the first Cat3 climb ahead of Molano and Zmorka, moving up to a tied KoM-lead with Gradek (both 16pts)!
The group, however, is caught just into the second lap of the circuit around Fribourg, still 145km to go then. Another breakaway group is formed immediately:
Puusepp
Pellaud
Lindau
Bernas
Van Niekerk
Pellaud as the strongest puncheur in this group and showing off his NC's colors in front of his home crowd..
Three more Cat3 mountain sprints for those escapees then and so an opportunity to attack the KoM-leaders, too:
Lindau takes the first ahead of Bernas and Puusepp..
Bernas takes the second ahead of Lindau and Pussepp..
Puusepp takes the third ahead of Bernas and Lindau:
Provisional KoM Gradek/Bernas/Kanepejs 16, Lindau 12, Puusepp/Zmorka/Vlasov 8
Bernas would also win the first intermediate ahead of Pellaud, who would take the second and final intermediate sprint then..
In the meantime, the peloton is once again led by Carlsberg and also Carrefour. Opposing to yesterday, also Euskaltel does a lot of work in the pursuit of the breakaway - may Moser feel better than 24hours ago?
24km to go and the pack is down by 1'19" on the escaping group.
10km and while the gap is down to 40 seconds now, the high pace and tricky profile make for a major split in the peloton - about 50 riders on the wrong side of the split and there's at least one notable name in danger to lose valuable time on this stage now:
Garby got dropped by his own team's pace! He certainly did not pay enough attention, right? He has a couple of teammates around him though and they fight to limit the damage..
Euskaltel as the most active team in the final two laps of the day and they deliver another bunch sprint decision: with now just 3km to go, the break of the day has been swallowed by the pack and the sprint is about to be kicked off!
Coppel Nazaret Li Cosnefroy Petit Salleh Moser Appollonio Keough Brus Von Hoff Sweeting Kuboki
Yesterday's stage winner Boivin not yet at very front of the peloton!
2.5km to go and instead of Boivin, it's now Gradek moving towards the front with an early kick!
Also Piaskowy is showing his leader shirt, catching up to Kuboki with still the same picture at the front of the sprint train(s)..
1.8km to the finish and while Carrefour's train blew apart with Petit already on his own now, Nazaret still leads Cosnefroy/Moser towards the flamme rouge!
Gradek keeps moving towards the front.. everything else almost stays the same so far..
Nielsen catches up to Kuboki close to the final kilometre, Piaskowy can't hang on anymore..
Petit launches his sprint and he now tries to go past Gradek, who almost caught up to Euskaltel's trio! Cosnefroy now taking over from Nazaret..
Appollonio still ahead of Salleh, Keough, Brus, Von Hoff and so on!
Gradek cracks with 700metres to go!
Petit and Appollonio now in the leading positions with Moser finally leaving his teammate's wheel from a slightly worse position than he had before..
Salleh following Appollonio.. Keough, Brus and Von Hoff on the further positions..
Just a couple of hundred metres to the line and it's Petit with a small advantage on Appollonio and Moser!
Salleh cracks, Keough and Von Hoff - as well as Kuboki - ain't too far behind, probably fighting for the remaining Top-5 places then..
That was a narrow decision and even the TV cameras struggled to get a proper picture of all three riders at the front:
Moser 1st ahead of Appollonio and Petit! A tough one for Appollonio, who had a strong finish to go past Petit. But Moser had an even better final punch to lung in for this narrow victory. A great way to bounce back from yesterday's disappointing 19th place!
Keough with a fast finish to beat Von Hoff, who completes the Top-5 ahead of Kuboki, Sweeting, Salleh, Nielsen..
..and Ignatiev! Fablok's versitale veteran a strong 10th on the stage and with GC leader and teammate cracking on the final metres (15th on the stage), that's the GC lead for Ignatiev today.
Moser celebrates a nice stage win to move up to a tied 3rd place in the points classification, where Appollonio takes the lead (36pts) ahead of Von Hoff (32pts). A disappointing result for Boivin (25pts) as 16th today..
A disappointing day for Garby as well:
+ 3'01" for the dropped group!
