Stage 2 - Sion > Montreux The first of two consecutive flat stages, that ain't really that flat, to be honest. Today's stage features a quite challenging middle sector and it's questionable whether some pure flat sprinters will survive the stage in the front group.
They did last year, though, with Appollonio winning the stage and the Italian is a favorite for today again. Moser, Petit, Boivin, Von Hoff or Keough as other contenders. Salleh or Aregger as Sauber's options - certainly a special race for the team and Aregger in particular.
Rainy weather make for some tricky conditions and the first breakaway group does not stay clear for too long:
Bernas, Hamza, Molano, Ganna, Goddaert, Oba looked like they would be allowed to form the break of the day, but the group is caught prior to the first intermediate sprint!
Close to this first sprint (118km before the finish) a group of 4 riders would then go clear though:
Zmorka (15th GC + 0.13)
Gradek (39th GC + 0.26)
Vlasov
Kanepejs
Particularly Zmorka with a nice opportunity to gain bonifications and a possible Top-10 place in the GC eventually!
Gradek dominates the two intermediate and two mountain sprints though: he takes the first intermediate ahead of Vlasov/Kanepejs and the second ahead of Kanepejs/Vlasov..
He easily wins the two mountains sprints for the first KoM-lead then:
Provisional Points Gradek 12, Vlasov 6, Kanepejs 6
Provisional KoM Gradek 16, Kanepejs 10, Vlasov 8
Carlsberg, Sauber and (though not with the same workload) Carrefour as those teams leading the chase of the peloton, that has narrowed the gap on the breakaway back to 1'17" with now 25km remaining. Obviously, Appollonio and Salleh/Aregger feel confident today and it's good news for all sprinters, that no one got dropped on the climbs here..
It took the peloton until 3km before the finish to finally catch the breakaway group, but here we are with the sprint preparation, just when the escapees got reeled in:
Reza Coppel Salleh Appollonio Li Aregger Westling Petit Brus Kuboki Boivin Sweeting Keough Von Hoff Nielsen Tvetcov La Lavandier
2km to go and Salleh/Aregger are slightly ahead of Carrefour's train now.. Appollonio not perfectly placed, but at the very front at least..
Westling lost his wheel, Brus ahead of him now.. Keough now at Nielsen's wheel with Boivin still ahead..
Clost to the kite, Salleh and Aregger are seperated from each other.. Reza ahead of Appollonio, who may just picked the totally wrong wheel!
Boivin launches his sprint and tries to go past Petit, who's still behind his final leadout Li.. Von Hoff also trying to move forward, but there's not much space on the left side of the road..
..yap, Von Hoff is boxed in by Appollonio, who launches his sprint as well now! Aregger though opening up a small gap on him and Salleh..
Boivin with a fast kick, too! Petit, Sweeting, Brus, Keough and Westling on the further positions..
Boivin and Aregger still leading with Appollonio now trying to go past them!
Von Hoff and Brus right behind him and trying to find a way through.. Petit struggles! Keough and Kuboki attempt to catch up to Boivin..
They can't though, as Boivin keeps his pace to maintain a narrow advantage over Appollonio and Von Hoff!
Aregger loses ground, Brus is still behind Appollonio with Salleh and Sweeting fighting for a Top-5 result here..
Boivin holds on to his narrow lead and he takes the stage! Quite an impressive sprint from just outside the final kilometre.
Von Hoff with a close 2nd place ahead of Appollonio, who could not repeat last year's victory on this stage. Still a good podium result for those two.
Sweeting lungs in for a great 4th place ahead of Brus! Both amateurs should be pleased with a performance like today..
Aregger 6th ahead of Salleh, Kuboki, Keough and a disappointing Petit completes the Top-10 ahead of Westling and Nielsen. Petit had a good leadout here, but apparently he did not have the legs to finish it off. His sprint wasn't too fast after all.
With Zmorka failing to sprint for bonifications, there's no notable changes inside the GC's Top-20 (Gradek moves up to 23rd) - but Boivin obviously takes the lead in the points classification, Gradek the first KoM leader. Piaskowy retains the leader shirt for another day. Tomorrow's flat stage should be one for the "punchy sprinters", so Boivin may fancy his chances to add another notable result here.
