Stage 2 - Macclesfield > Knutsford The first of three consecutive flat stages should be one for the sprinters, but the profile ain't easy with two short climbs featured in the circuit, that has to be ridden five times. Heavy crosswinds (45-50kmh) and rainy weather make for some tough conditions, too.
Saber rode a great first stage and will obviously target for stage podiums/wins and bonifications now. Vantomme as the best sprinter on paper, though not as good on hills like Saber, Van Asbroeck and Holloway, who should be all amongst the favorites for a sprint decision. Just like both Matt and Luke Rowe, Lavoine or Itami.
The stage kicks off with an early mountain sprint:
De Bondt takes it ahead of Lebris..
GarcÃa Cortina as a next rider trying to go clear from the peloton!
Also Marzuki, Molard and Ngamoki-Cameron would attempt to go for a breakaway, but none of those first attackers would stay clear eventually!
Except of GarcÃa Cortina, who spent a few kilometres as a solo escapee (also taking the second mountain sprint that way)..
Uchima would then bridge across at this second climb and complete the break of the day: two riders leading by four minutes with now 125km remaining!
It keep raining and also the crosswinds remains at the same level: the peloton started to chase halfway through the parcours and teams like Philips, cycleYorkshire and Netia share the work at the front of the pack.
40km to go now and the breakaway duo leads by 2'31" at this point..
Uchima eventually takes more mountain sprints than GarcÃa Cortina (securing himself the KoM lead for one day) and he also tries to go clear on the final lap!
Provisional KoM Uchima 31, GarcÃa Cortina 28, Russo 25, Grashev 19
No luck though, as the chasing teams totally control the race so far: 10km before the finish, both escapees have been swallowed by the peloton, where it's still the same teams setting quite a high pace with crosswinds up to 50kmh now.
Just 4km to go and as the sprint preparation has already begun, the pace now makes for a major split inside the pack: 52 riders in the first group, 93 riders in the second group, that is already a few seconds behind with just a short way to go now!
As from a first quick look at the group, we spot a few notable names caught on the wrong side of the split:
Russo (10th GC)
Zepuntke (11th GC)
David
Bush
Vermote
Van Keirsbulck
Burghardt
Albert
Grashev
Back to the front of the leading group, where those teams, who worked at the front so far, also set the trains for their sprinters:
Franczak Sobota Krieger Vantomme Te Brake Corti Saber Itami Drapac Rowe Lavoine Thwaites Ulanowski Rowe
cycleYorkshire, however, yet struggling to get their guys together!
Sobota/Vantomme still ahead of Te Brake/Saber with now 1.3km to the finish - the first leadouts are done with their work..
Itami, Drapac and the cycleYorkshire's armada ahead of Lavoine and a struggling Ulanwoski/L Rowe!
Sobota still ahead of Vantomme and also Te Brake opens up a small gap on Saber as soon as he launched his final sprint!
Itami trying to go past Saber and then it's Thwaites catching up to his wheel! Drapac a few metres in arrears..
This is going to be tight decision with Te Brake now ahead of Sobota and Saber/Vantomme finally at top speed to go past their leadouts!
Itami in the mix, too - Thwaites couldn't hang on though..
Saber lungs in for the victory! His final push made him cross the finish line as first and that's obviously a great result considering his already quite promising GC position prior to the stage.
Itami with also a strong finish as 2nd..
Sobota finishes a narrow 3rd ahead of Te Brake and Vantomme! Quite a performance from Netia and Philips today, well done.
Thwaites comes in as 6th ahead of Krieger, L Rowe, Lavoine and M Rowe completes the Top-10..
Good news for those riders, who found themselves in the second peloton: with several riders sprinting instead of sitting up, they managed to close the gap between the two big groups eventually. So there's no time losses for Russo or Zepuntke today!
The only exceptions are two kinda TTT groups, which lose more than 3 minutes: Iberia with five riders (Kosic, Cortina as the most notable names) and Meiji also with five riders (Kuroeda, Uchima)...
A great day for Saber, who moves up to 4th in the GC (+ 0.37) and so he gains valuable bonifications on Baugnies - as well as moving up to 1st in the points classification.
