Tour du Faso - Stage 2
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-000.jpg

The second stage is a stage for the sprinters, so kinda a rest day for the GC riders, who will back into the fight for tomorrow’s and final stage. It’s an important day also for Roger Kluge (and also for Dan McLay) being one of the best sprinters here, so he could try to gain some bonus seconds to make up for yesterday’s lose against Breen.

The main favourites for the stage win should be Michael Matthews and Kobe Vanoverschelde, as for Colbrelli we have the doubt about if his team will priorisize the GC battle and setup the sprint for Kluge instead. But with the final kms looking a bit bumpy, a rider like Marcel Aregger could enjoy his chances today

Some of the strongest winds you’ll ever seen in a cycling race are here in Faso

4 riders go in the breakaway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Reijnen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Tybor
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Beyer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Halvorsen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Reijnen wins the two first sprints, one ahead of Halvorsen, the other ahead of Tybor. Not that they’ll care about the bonus seconds, and probably neither the points for the Green jersey.

Their gap with 65 kms to go is 5 minutes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-002.jpg

Just 10 kms to go, and the breakaway has a chance to make it. Their gap is 1’20, as the sprinter’s team have slept and let the gap grow too much

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Tybor attacks with 6 kms to go, as he sees that neither Halvorsen and Beyer are collaborating, despite the gap to the bunch being stable at 1’10. The high tail-wind in the latter part of the stage is clearly helping them a lot

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Reijnen is able to catch up to Tybor in the final 4 kms, which means that Halvorsen and Beyer are out of the stage win fight

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Reijnen looks done, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Tybor slows down. The bunch is way behind, as they messed up also the last kms, when a couple of ENI riders rode away from the bunch, then slowed down, and lost another minute while they were organising themselves to launch Vanoverschelde

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-006.jpg

Surely pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Tybor must not have made that mistake... unbelievable. The Slovak launches too early the sprint, thinking Reijnen won’t be able to follow, but he cracks under the Flamme Rouge. And Reijnen had something left to have a good speed still

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Reijnen gets the lead with 600 metres to go, and now it’s a drag race to the finish, with Reijnen having all odds with him to get the win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-007.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Kiel Reijnen wins the second stage in Tour du Faso, beating Patrik Tybor for the stage win from the breakaway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-008.jpg

The bunch is exploding into pieces, and it looks like 14 riders are ahead of the rest, with only Kluge and Breen of the GC riders (and McLay also)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-009.jpg

Beyer gets the final podium place of the stage after dropping Halvorsen in the final km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-010.jpg

The young Norwegian holds off the bunch to get a great fourth place, with Colbrelli winning the sprint of the bunch.

McLay can only be sixth today, so he misses out on the race lead by just 2 seconds. Habtom is seventh ahead of Matthews and Kluge, who gets two bonus seconds that surely are important.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-011.jpg

And some wrong tactics played there by Delvaux, as De Bondt “steals” Breen the final bonus second. The team better hope that Breen doesn’t lose the race or any GC spot because of that second

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Faso/Faso-2-012.jpg

At the end no splits were given in the bunch, with a Top10 rider like Kulppi finishing in the latter part of the bunch, risking a time loss today, but he got unscathed

Great win for Reijnen and Telia, a team that had no hopes for the race other than a breakaway win in this stage, and they got it.

In the GC, Breen retains the lead, but he sees his lead reduced to just 2 seconds over McLay, while Zhupa stays at 7 seconds and Kluge is now 11 seconds behind. Only one stage left, and it’s a massive cobbled stage. If riders play it correctly, we should see huge gaps.
