SAA Tour d'Afrique - Stage 4

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-000.jpg

Welcome to Kenya for the final stage of Tour d’Afrique. Today’s stage ends in Nairobi, concluding an exciting sprinting fest around the continent. Currently we have two riders fighting for the GC, with Swift leading the race with 1 second over Degenkolb. But also Coquard and Kennaugh are within range of getting the GC win, though it’s unlikely

Despite having an intermediate sprint within 10 kms of the start, neither pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb were interested on it, so some riders attacked, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Tanovitchii, who wins the sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Trakhov

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-001.jpg

As yesterday, 6 riders in the breakaway. Could make another hard challenge for the bunch to catch them at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Tanovitchii shows his strenght by winning also the second and last intermediate sprint of the day, barely ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Malecki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Trakhov

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-003.jpg

Puncture for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Boeckmans with 90 kms to go. He shouldn’t have many troubles returning to the bunch, but you never know if any team will try to eliminate the Belgian for the sprint (He would return quickly to the bunch)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-004.jpg

Less than 10 kms to go, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Malecki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Brandao have left behind the rest of the breakaway. They have a 50-second gap to the bunch where Carrefour, Air France and Aegon are doing most of the work, so the bunch has the race controlled

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-005.jpg

With 4 kms left, we can see that Festina, Carrefour and Aegon are all making decent sprint trains, and the rest of sprinters are struggling having been miss-placed after a 90º right hand corner

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-006.jpg

Two kms to go, and Festina has won the battle of lead-outs with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santos being in the first place, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard on his wheel. Next to him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzakis is giving his leader an alternative lead-out. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare and several Carrefour riders are in Coquard’s wheel, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump a few metres behind trying to follow this train.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen is trying to do what he did the previous two days, start his sprint with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift on his wheel with 2 kms to go, and then leave the Brit to finish the job. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino are on the Brit’s wheel though.

Behind these trains, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs is trying to do an early sprint to have a chance, and behind the Czech rider, there’s a mass with riders of Festina, Aegon and Carrefour. It seems like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb has given up on his GC hopes, because he’s not even trying to follow wheels and is around place 70 in the group, so this means that Swift only needs a 4th place today to win GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard is struggling to stay on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzaki’s wheel, which can cost the French heavily later, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen is again doing a perfect leadout for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare was kinda blocked by a fading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santos, and has lost all his chances for the win. Also Carrefour is trying to leadout pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs in their train, but they are quite behind Aegon and Festina riders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-008.jpg

800 metres to go, and this is the moment when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard leaves their lead-out and start their sprints. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino are fighting for the third place at this point, but look how close Coquard and Swift were to crash together, with the Aegon rider forcing Coquard to go closer to the fence

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard takes the lead from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift with 300 metres to go! They have a big gap to anyone else, so the win will be for one of them for sure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino are starting to struggle, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs going strong for that final podium place of the stage, which could give them a Top5 GC result depending on other riders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-010.jpg

That’s a close win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bryan Coquard! Great battle between Festina and Aegon all day, first with their trains and then their sprinters, with Coquard taking the win today, but Swift can celebrate a bigger win, as he wins for the third time Tour d’Afrique!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-011.jpg

Lo Cicero overtake Demare in the line to take third place, with Mohs completing the Top5. Kump, Vantomme, Avelino, Groenewegen and Tzortakis take the final bonus times of a race which has seen a great battle between sprinters

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-012.jpg

First win of the season for Coquard, starting to get used to be a top sprinter this year

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-4-013.jpg

As we already said, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Ben Swift wins by the third time this race in it’s 3-year existence. A dominance not known in the MG since the early days with Cunego winning again and again Giro d’Italia. 7 seconds was his margin over Bryan Coquard, who overtook a disappointed Degenkolb in GC with his win today. For the German, who still gets a 3rd place, it happened the same as in 2016. Two wins in the first two stages, and then he lost the GC win to Swift. Kennaugh holds on to fourth place, one second ahead of Demare, two of Lo Cicero and three of Mohs. A close battle for that place, that’s for sure. Vantomme, Cavendish and Houle round out the Top10 of this race.

Swift wins too the Points jersey, 8 points ahead of Coquard, with Degenkolb in third.

Ghyselinck had already secured his KoM win yesterday, ahead of U25 winner Ganna

And that’s it from Africa. Swift keeps showing why he’s probably the best sprinter in MG history by winning yet another sprinting race
