SAA Tour d'Afrique - Stage 3
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-000.jpg

The third stage of this Tour d’Afrique bring us to Rwanda, as today’s stage ends in Kigali. Degenkolb will look to keep winning stages in this race, hopefully with more ethical tactics than yesterday, while the rest, specially Coquard and Swift as they aren’t too far away in GC yet, will try to win some time back before the final stage to attack the GC lead. Also, today we will see who wins KoM classification, as we have a Cat.3 KoM, which basically gives the jersey to whoever reaches the summit first

Finally we have a wind-less stage, and surprisingly the bunch allows 6 riders to get in the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Gaudu
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ghyselinck
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Korsaeth
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kasperkiewicz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Soucy

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Korsaeth wins the first intermediate sprint of the day, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ghyselinck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Soucy. Still 115 kms to go, but their gap is now 5 minutes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-002.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Jan Ghyselinck wins for Generali the KoM standings of this race! He was the strongest in the uphill, finishing way ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Soucy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kasperkiewcz, who will finish 3rd and 5th in this classification

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Korsaeth wins the second and final sprint of the day, with the same riders being second and third, hence Korsaeth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ghyselinck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Soucy will win 6,4 and 2 seconds in GC each one. After this sprint, there were 65 kms to go, and they hold a gap of 3 minutes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-004.jpg

The sprinter’s teams are struggling to close the gap to the breakaway, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ghyselinck sees an oportunity to get a surprise win, and attacks the breakaway group with 13 kms to go while they still had a 1’15 gap. Iberia has already used pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado has been chasing for a long time, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb’s train for today is missing

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ghyselinck is reeled in with only 6 kms to go by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Korsaeth’s work. They still have 50 seconds to the group, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Gaudu has been dropped from the breakaway, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kasperkiewicz is hanging in the back dangerously

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-006.jpg

But these riders run out of gas, and several sprint trains working “together” made a late catch inside the final 3 kms. Aegon, Festina, Carrefour, Netia and cycleYorkshire are having each their sprint train, with some jokers placed in each train looking to gain advantage from being in someone’s wheel

Yorkshire train: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Thwaites, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Stauff
Netia train: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Franczak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Sobota, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs
Carrefour train: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Schorn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Bercz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Feiereisen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump
Festina train: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Ackermann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard (a bit separated from his team-mates)
Aegon train: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png van der Poel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish (way behind)

And then, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb on his own, not following anyone’s wheel with 4 kms to go. Disaster incoming for the German

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ghyselinck finally gives up with little more than 2 kms to go, in the moment that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santos has perfectly driven pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard to the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift is still trusting his lead-out with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png MdvPoel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen, same happening with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero, who still has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh are following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar, who is sprinting without considering the train of his team-mates in the right side of the road

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Itami and all other sprinters seems to have been caught off-guard in the organised sprint, unlike the previous ones, and might have already lost their chances of winning today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-008.jpg

With 1,5 kms to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen has taken the first place, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift on his wheel and no one else following them. Festina is making a nice train, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard will have to start his sprint soon, or Swift will breakaway for the win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme seems to have stolen pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero’s leadout rider. “If you can’t have a proper train, just steal one”, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs are starting their sprints from a long distance

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift has waited until only 700 metres to go to jump off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen’s wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare are leading the chase behind the Aegon duo, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh and Vantomme close to them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump are struggling to keep their rhythm, but their still a long way to go. And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb seems to be making a nice comeback, which won’t be enough to a third straight win in the race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-010.jpg

350 metres to go for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift, who isn’t the fastest sprinter right now, but has the most important thing, the first place at the moment. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare are starting to fade and might disturb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump’s sprints, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb are coming really fast from behind. Maybe pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen can return the favour from yesterday to the German...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-011.jpg

But there’s no need for it, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Ben Swift takes the win in Kigali! Groenewegen has a big share of the win, but the Brit still had to do his part of the job. And with Degenkolb so far behind, he might even take the leader’s jersey depending on the German’s final position

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-012.jpg

Kennaugh takes the second place from Lo Cicero and Mohs, with the Czech having been really close to overtake Swift, but fading a little in the final metres cost him even the stage podium

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-013.jpg

Cavendish beats for the narrowest of margin Coquard for the fifth place, with Vantomme taking 7th over Degenkolb. Avelino and Itami take the final bonus seconds of the stage, closing the top10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-3-014.jpg

And Ben Swift not only wins the stage, but also becomes the new race leader! It’s just a one-second lead to Degenkolb, but it means a lot after two wins by the German earlier in the race, including that dirty move in the sprint preparation yersterday. Only other two riders have a real chance of winning the race tomorrow, with Coquard being 14 seconds behind Swift and Kennaugh 22. Everyone else is at least 35 seconds behind Swift in GC, who also is the new leader in the Points Jersey
