The race moves to South Africa for its second stage and after yesterday’s really weird finish, we’ll see if we can have a calmer sprint. John Degenkolb won yesterday ahead of Ben Swift so the German has the leading jersey on his shoulders, and surely he’ll be looking to extend his lead today with another win.

We get confirmation from the weather forecast that we will live another windy stage

There are three riders that try their luck with a breakaway today. They are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Ignatiev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Balloni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Borges, who probably is in the BotD in the wrong day, as he should be trying it tomorrow to get the KoM jersey

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-001.jpg

Anyway, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Borges is so much better sprinter than the other riders of the breakaway that he wins easily the first 3 bonus seconds of the day, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Ignatiev and a struggling pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Balloni, who might get caught by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Tanovitchii, who attacked from the bunch a few kms ago

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-002.jpg

Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Balloni keep watching how ridiculous is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Borges’s kick, given he beats them in the other two intermediate sprints of the day, taking 18 points for the Points jersey and 9 bonus seconds. At the end pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Tanovitchii was caught by the bunch, which wasn’t looking forward to more riders in the front.

The breakaways has a 2-minute gap with 30 kms to go, while in the bunch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Aberasturi suffered a puncture and seems unlikely that he’ll make it back in the peloton, leaving Hugo Boss without his sprinter for this race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-003.jpg

The breakaway is caught with less than 7 kms to go, and now it’s time for the trains to be formed. It seems like Iberia and Aegon have already started to work on it. Some riders have been dropped from the bunch already, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hivert, who was sitting 9th in GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-004.jpg

Iberia is showing to have the best train for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, with still 3 helpers for the race leader with 4 kms to go, and most of sprinters have choosen their train, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish in the German’s wheel, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare trying to pick this train. Meanwhile, it seems like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen is struggling to follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli, and this could end up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift in a not favorable position for the sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Houle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino seems to have picked the Brit’s wheel, or maybe they were left without other choice given how fast is Iberia’s train going with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Jans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-005.jpg

A bit more than 2 kms to go, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado is the only man left for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb to help him, no worries though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare has taken Degenkolb’s wheel, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard seems to have been disturbed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden dropping off, affecting too pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish, as they were on the French’s wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift had enough of being way behind Degenkolb, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen is making a very early lead-out, trying to surprise the other sprinters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme follows perfectly Swift, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Houle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Boeckmans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss are way behind and should only fight for low Top10 places at best

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard had to do a huge effort to catch Demare’s wheel again, which surely will affect his sprint later. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift are coming really fast in the right side of the road, even making pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme to lose their wheels. For the second day in-a-row, the rider that was leading out the sprint stopped right before the favourites were suppoused to sprint, so this might be a gift to Aegon if they don’t pick up the speed again before the final corner with 1 km to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-007.jpg

Really bad taste in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb’s move, as showing Aegon’s train coming from his right side, he moved across the road to block pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift, and stealing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen’s wheel to come out of the final corner in the best position

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-008.jpg

Under the missing Flamme Rouge, Groenewegen still leads, but he’ll soon fade. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare launched their sprints before pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift did, so they seem to have gotten a little advantage over them with still a long way to go. And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard has decided to stay on his compatriot’s wheel, seeing if he can save some energies to compensate his wastes in the previous km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-009.jpg

With 700 metres left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh has taken the lead from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen, who quickly fades and should even lose places to sprinters like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Houle or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss who are coming fast from behind, unlike pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme, who tried to follow the leaders and now have exploded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard seems to be the fastest in the leading group right now, after jumping outside of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare’s wheel, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift might not have the legs to win today after Degenkolb’s dirty move before

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-010.jpg

With 300 metres, the win can only be for three riders; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb. The German doesn’t look to be gaining ground on the leading duo, so his only hope is that both fade later in the sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift definitely can’t keep up with this trio, and might even fall into the clutches of Mohs/Houle

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-011.jpg

And what the race leader was hoping was what happened, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb overtakes both Coquard and Kennaugh in the final 50 metres to take his second stage win in the race, like he did in 2016 winning the first two stages back then. Coquard beats Kennaugh for the second place, but the Frenchman saw the win so close...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-012.jpg

Swift has to be happy with a fourth place today, ahead of Demare, and a charging Mohs who has to blame his positioning, as he had the speed to fight for the win today.

Houle, Guerao, Bar and Lo Cicero finish in the last bonus places, taking the final bonus seconds of today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-2-013.jpg

Two stages, two wins for Degenstache, and he has now a comanding lead in GC, with a 17-second gap to Coquard and 20 seconds over Swift, with Demare in fourth being already more than a stage win behind the German, who also leads comfortably the Points standings. Now the German shouldn’t like to remember what happened in 2016, when he also won the two first stages in this race, and ended up losing GC to Ben Swift
