SAA Tour d'Afrique - Stage 1
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-000.jpg

First stage of this sprinter’s race around Afrique. Today we are in Mauricio to kick off this race. With some many great sprinters from both PT and PCT divisions, it’s hard to pick a favourite for the stage win, though Swift, Coquard and Degenkolb should be the main favourites, being the strongest 84 sprinters

And everyone will face super high winds here in Mauricio for the opening stage. This could bring a caothic sprint, or maybe even crosswinds before the sprint.

The first riders to attack are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Ganna, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Fernandes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hivert. Despite some attempts by riders as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Bratashcuk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ovechkin or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png De Bod, these three riders seems to have got a real gap after a few kms of racing

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Ganna is the best sprinter of the trio and wins easily the first intermediate sprint of the day, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Vichot

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-002.jpg

But the most important sprint of the day for those riders likely is the Cat.4 KoM mid-stage that will reward one rider with a Polka Dot jersey for at least two days. And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Ganna beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Vichot by a very narrow margin for the points and the jersey. The gap of the breakaway is 7 minutes with 110 kms to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Ganna shows his incredible potential (another jewel for Puma, though this year he’s racing in Euskaltel) by winning all the intermediate sprint, gain 18 points for the Points jersey and 9 bonus seconds. All times beating pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hivert, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Fernandes always struggled to follow the others with his low spr/acc

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-004.jpg

15 kms to go and the breakaway’s gap is finally under the minute. The bunch seems to have the stage under control, but with 70 km/h winds! you can’t have anything sured, as a lot of riders are starting to get dropped from the peloton

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-005.jpg

With less than 10 kms to go, there’s only 50 riders left in the main group. Ahead of them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Ganna and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hivert are still fighting, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Fernandes has been already caught. We can see that the latest riders dropped are two sprinters like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Rowe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Haller, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Moser starting to lose meters ahead of them, while others like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Porsev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Kupfernagel or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Clarke had been already dropped

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-006.jpg

Just five kilometers for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Ganna and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hivert, who won’t be able to finish off the stage, but surely they can be happy with their ride today. Behind them, only 30 riders in the leading group, where Iberia is taking over the chase, and long times effort from Aegon and Festina riders. The latest sprinters dropped are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Guardini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Afewerki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzakis

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-007.jpg

This is going to be a very messy sprint, with a very reduced bunch, and several non-sprinters in the first places with less than 3 kms left

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen is already leading the group, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift only in fifth wheel, which shows the effort everyone had to do, as Aegon is already left with two riders, same happening to Iberia, and they might have even lost Merino Criado for the sprint given he had to finish the chase of the breakaway riders. In the middle of Aegon’s riders is the very own pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Ji and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hivert, who despite having been all day in the breakaway wants to get involved in the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb has lost the main train and looks to be already sprinting from 2,7 kms to go, which won’t go well for him sure. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Arashiro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Malori or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Mas are there ahead of sprinters like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh, who might still have a chance for the win if Groenewegen doesn’t have enough power to make a full leadout

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-008.jpg

Completely messy sprint, as everyone stopped following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb stormed close to the right fences, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift saw this and has tried to jump to that train, while also trying to follow Degenkolb’s “train” are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Arashiro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Mas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Malori and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santos, surprisingly the best Festina rider at the moment, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard way behind, in the same level as riders as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Boeckmans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb was so strong that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish exploded with more than 1 km to go, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift is now in full speed waiting for Degenkolb to fade, because he will have to settle for the second place if not

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, helped by the super strong tail wind in the sprint, is probably reaching the fastest ever speed for a sprinter with 87 km/h. Not even pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift can come close to that, and the Brit seems to be surrendering already, thinking that a second place is good enough today, given the carnage that will come after him

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-011.jpg

For these riders there’s still one km left, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Arashiro is already overtaking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish for third place, though the Japanese has heavily reduced his great speed, and with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Ji coming really fast behind him, he won’t finish third. More behind, probably around place 20 at this moment, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare are making big comebacks after being blocked by other riders or just waiting for a better sprinting distance. It’s very likely that there will be a huge shakeup in the battle for third place and other bonus seconds places

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png John Degenkolb wins the stage ahead of Ben Swift in one of the weirdest and fastest sprint ever. The wind, the late catch of the breakaway, lack of leadout riders, all made a messy sprint where the German was the strongest for the third consecutive year, as he has always won the first stage of the race since it’s in the calendar

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-013.jpg

We can’t be sure of how all these riders ended in those places, but Coquard ended his sprint with an amazing speed that might just prevent the leading duo of getting a time gap today. Houle gets fourth place, ahead of Demare, Vantomme, Itami and Bar, who close the Top8 and gives Festina another rider with bonus seconds. The final riders to get bonus seconds are Hermans and Ji

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Afrique/SAA-1-014.jpg

It’s not unexpected, but it’s always a controvesial decision by the race officials to not give time gaps to anyone today. Literally all riders will get the same time, which will hurt a lot of riders that finished way ahead of other sprinters and now sees all their gain down the drain.

A recap with how all the big sprinters did today, of those outside Top10:

Boeckmans 12th, Cavendish 14th, Mohs 16th, Kennaugh 19th, Groenewegen 20th, Kump 21st, Goss 26th, Guerao 29th, Lo Cicero 34th, Avelino 56th
