Welcome to the USA championships! The route is the hilly one, so the big favourite is Tejay van Garderen, with Ian Boswell in a second step. As contenders, riders like Phinney, reigning champion Dombrowski, Talansky or Squire
After a fake rider was the only rider in the breakaway today, finally we see some action in the penultimate climb, as Minions starts to set a high rhythm, which sees almost all the fake riders dropped with 20 kms to go
5 kms to go and the rider are about to start the final climb, where it’ll be decided who will be the new American champion. RBC has a big train for Phinney, though Van Garderen has placed in the middle of the train with a team-mate, while Boswell is on Phinney’s wheel, followed by Dombrowski and Talansky
Van Garderen attacks with 4 kms to the finish and Boswell is inmediately on his wheel. Selander has also seen the move and is trying to prove that his team’s work earlier wasn’t in vane
As expected, the win will be between Van Garderen and Boswell, and with 2,5 kms to go, they have a 25-second gap to a 6-rider group with Selander, Phinney, Dombrowski, Gaimon, Squire and Talansky, the one who is pulling in this group to try to reduce the gap to the front
Final km for Van Garderen and Boswell! They will have to sprint for the win today. Behind them, Talansky left everyone else behind and looks to settle for the bronze medal
500 metres and after opening both their sprints, it’s still close, though Van Garderen is faster and is already in the first place...
... so as expected, Tejay Van Garderen is the winner of USA Road Championships!
Ian Boswell will get the Silver medal, while Talansky finishes 30 seconds in arrears, and will get the Bronze. Phinney and Dombrowski couldn’t fight for the win like last year, but at least both get a Top5 today, while Selander, Gaimon, Squire, Kinney and Warbasse complete the Top10
