Tour of Tasmania - Stage 2
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-000.jpg

Welcome to the “queen” stage of 2017 Tour of Tasmania. We have in the menu a hard hilly stage where the puncheur will have to attack to take time on the timetrialists ahead of tomorrow’s ITT. Senyenov has a 1-minute lead over the top puncheurs in the race, so there’s a chance that the Kazakh can retain his lead if the stage isn’t ridden at the highest speed

Four riders have attacked from the beggining, including the KoM wearer (Senyenov is also the leader here) pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Gougeard. But the Frenchman was beaten by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski in the first climb of the day

Cat.3 KoM

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski 6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Gougeard 4

The other rider in the breakaway is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Boroš

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-001.jpg

There’s a crash in the back of the bunch. No very important riders are affected, but Jayco isn’t having the best of races so far, as 3 of their riders are involved in the crash, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haas and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Vanspeybrouck on the floor.

Also, in a very wtf situation, Ayubowan is making all their riders to wait for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Petit, including pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png McCarthy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis, both who can do well in this stage...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Foliforov surprises both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Gougeard in the second climb of the day, while Paterski ties with Gougeard in the provisional lead of KoM

Cat.3 KoM

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-003.jpg

Another crash, and this time it affects a team leader in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Beltran. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Zakarin, as a top domestique for Trofimov, is also involved in the crash, as well as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Afonso. The gap with the breakaway is 5 minutes with 120 kms to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski wins yet another KoM sprint to take the provisional lead in the KoM standings

Cat.3 KoM

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski 6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Gougeard 4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Boroš 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Gougeard strikes back in a Cat.4 climb, overtaking again pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Paterski into the KoM lead, having two more points that the Vesuvio rider. Nothing else has happened in the last 60 kms, with the gap between both groups staying around 2’30. Oh, and the group of Beltran, and Ayubowan’s group both made it back to the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Boeckmans and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Furdi have been working in the front for a lot of time, but it’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png M.A. Lopez’s effort the one that neutralises the BotD with more than 30 kms left in the stage. Evonik must put a high rhythm if they want the stage to be really selective, so Skujins can get a decent GC result. This confirms pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Gougeard's KoM win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-007.jpg

Less than 25 kms to go, and the bunch is entering the two succesive climbs, that should see some attacks by the top puncheurs, but the riders are still following pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Boeckmans’ pace, so unless something changes soon, we’ll see a lot of riders in the group after these two climbs

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-008.jpg

So no attacks in this two climbs... they are giving the GC win to Coppel or Phinney riding this way, as it’s third-tier domestiques in the front right now for eBuddy and Hugo Boss, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Mudarra, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo is the first places of the group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-009.jpg

This is an attack by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants that would have been perfect if the rhythm in the last climbs would have been way higher, but this will only lead to him wasting his chances for the stage win in this move, as all the top teams have several domestiques in the 100-rider group that remains in the front

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants is obvioulsy caught in the descent by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Vosekalns. This has been a very dissapointing stage, as with 10 kms left there are still almost 100 riders in the first group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi make his move with 5 kms to go, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants is the only one that can follow the Italian’s acceleration! eBuddy continues setting the pace in the bunch, like if those riders didn’t exist

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge tries to counter-attack, but it might be too late, as with 3 kms to go, the leading duo has over 20 seconds on the bunch. Following Bobridge are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Spilak, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png McCarthy, while eBuddy doesn’t seem to be bothered by anything that happens around them

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi might have working too much instead of making pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants to colaborate, and now he might be paying the price, as Bakelants accelerates with just over 1 km to go. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge’s move has made that little group to almost join the leading duo, while also cracking both Phinney and McCarthy

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-014.jpg

Under the Flamme Rouge, both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants start their sprints for the stage win, but watch out for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge, who has left everyone else behind, and might fancy his chances to repeat last year’s stage win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-015.jpg

A few seconds behind the first three riders, there’s the big group, led by Trofimov, Spilak and Kelderman. In the first twenty places we can spot riders as Phinney, Boswell, Kangert, McCarthy, Senyenov, Ginanni, Gesink, Skujins, Izagirre, Lutsenko, De Bie and Ciolek! It doesn’t look like there will be any gaps in this group, so around 80 riders might be given the same time as Trofimov, or whoever crosses the line before the Russian in this group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi has the sprint skills and the better positioning, so he’s clearly leading into the final 500 metres, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge fighting for the second place

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-017.jpg

And that’s a perfect demonstration of how to win a stage but lose the GC at the same time, as Simone Ponzi crosses the line first ahead of Bakelants and Bobridge, the rider that might become the GC favourite if there’s a gap to the main group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-018.jpg

Trofimov is fourth, barely ahead of Kelderman and Spilak, and it looks like there must be a gap around 15 seconds to Ponzi’s group. But we’ll wait on jury’s words to confirm it. What we can confirm is the rest of the stage top10, with Boswell, Castroviejo, Skujins and Kangert on it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-2-019.jpg

The jury awards a 17-second gap to the first three riders, so Roman Senyenov continues as the race leader heading into the 15-km final TT. He has now a 25-second gap to Ponzi, 33 to Bakelants and 37 to Bobridge. I guess no one expected the Kazakh to be able to hold onto the GC win, having only 1’02 to riders as Coppel, Phinney, Gesink or Keizer, so now the big question is if Jack Bobridge has enough with the 25 seconds that he has of advantage to the best timetrialists in the world to finally take the GC win in Tasmania, or if Coppel can make two in-a-row in Tasmania, or Phinney takes his first win here
