Tour of Tasmania - Stage 1
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-000.jpg

The last stage race of the PT calendar starts today with a long flat stage. The sprinting field quality isn’t the best that we could have had, but it makes sense when you remember that it’s the only sprint chance in this race, and neither it’s the easiest of stages to finish in a mass sprint

The attacks to get in the breakaway don’t wait more than 5 kms, and a breakaway is quickly formed with 4 riders

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Senyenov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Smirnovs
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Lovassy

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Senyenov won easily the KoM sprint ahead of the other 77 puncheurs, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Gougeard beating pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Smirnovs for second place. The rider of Gazelle will take the KoM lead after today’s stage, as this was the only climb of the day. Still over 150 kms left, but the gap is already 9 minutes. The sprinters’ teams will have to start soon to reduce that gap if they want a mass sprint finish

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-002.jpg

With a little more than 100 kms to go, there’s an intermediate sprint, which is won by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Smirnovs, ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Lovassy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Senyenov. The current gap to the bunch is 7 minutes, where Strava and Aker are the two teams mainly working to reduce the difference

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-003.jpg

In the second and last intermediate sprint, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Lovassy wins this time, ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Smirnovs and Senyenov. The bunch looks to have controlled the breakaway, as with 50 kms to the finish, the gap is only 3 minutes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-004.jpg

20 kms to go and the gap is now just 1 minute. But the riders will have to face now really high winds in this final part of the stage, something that can change the sprint, and benefit the best roulers between the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-005.jpg

A group of around 50 riders has been dropped from the main bunch, including several TT specialists, like Zmorka, Gonzalez Salas, Dillier, Hepburn, Haugard and Viennet. But the biggest name in that group is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Jay McCarthy. The Australian puncheur doesn’t have good legs today and this can be the nail in the coffin for Ayubowan to end up again in PCT

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Senyenov has attacked in the breakaway with 13 kms to go, and is opening a nice gap to the bunch, as he still has 1’15 on the group, where the biggest name that has been dropped in the last kms is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Bilbao. Anyway, there are still over 100 riders in the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-007.jpg

The very own pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants is having to do the work in the front of the bunch right now, as the gap that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Senyenov still keeps with just 7 kms to go is over 1 minute. The Kazakh is now in a little climb which will decide his fate in this stage. If he can climb it well enough, there’s no way he’ll lose the stage win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Gougeard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Smirnovs and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Lovassy have been finally caught by the group, where Puma is now taking the responsability, with both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Bongiorno and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz, hoping for a sprint where Ciolek can show his speed. The gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Senyenov hasn’t been reduced at all, and the Kazakh is on his way to take the biggest win of his career

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-009.jpg

More riders are being dropped from the group is that climb, like Reichenbach, Sutterlin, Haig or Porte

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-010.jpg

That’s an amazing sprint train that Strava is forming with 3 kms to go, having pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Hermans, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Langeveld, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Boeckmans, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek. A shame that it won’t be enough to fight for the stage win...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-011.jpg

... as Roman Senyenov crosses the finish line in St.Helens and takes the win in the opening stage in Tasmania!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-012.jpg

The lead-out of Strava seems to be working, as Boeckmans is putting Guarnieri in prime position to take the second place as a minor price

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-013.jpg

Guarnieri wins very easily the sprint for the second place. A win today for the Italian could have been a key result for Strava in their attempt to save themselves from relegating to PCT

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-014.jpg

Vanderbiest completes the podium of the stage, finishing ahead of Roelandts, Saber, Vesely, Petit and Zabel, while Grosu and Ciolek round up the top10 of the day

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tasmania/Tasman-1-015.jpg

Senyenov is the leader in all four classifications! His gap to the bunch was 38 seconds, so together with the bonus seconds he has taken today, he has a gap of 1’02 over the top favourites for the GC win. This gap won’t allow him to win the race, as he’s awful in TTs, but it might be enough to stay in the lead after tomorrow’s hilly stage if he’s on a good day

87 riders were able to finish in Guarnieri’s time, including a group with Skujins and Herklotz that had been dropped in the last 3 kms, but were given the same time as the main group. But other riders haven’t been that lucky. Haig, Dowsett, Reichenbach, Porte, Schelling, Sutterlin and Edmondson have lost over 3 minutes. And Bilbao, McCarthy, Schadlich, Hepburn, Viennet and Zmorka have lost almost 4’30 today
