The Tour of Britain kicks off with the first hilly stage, leading the peloton from Leeds to Sheffield. Quite a challenging stage with several short, but steep climbs. You may expect a bigger group to enter the finish in Sheffield though - there's an uphill finish then: a short (less than 300metres) climb up the Jenkin Road in Sheffield. Slopes over 11% will certainly offer a first chance to create gaps.
Roux, Chaves, van der Hugenhaben, Monfort and Vichot as the most promising leaders for their teams. Strong TT riders like Dennis, Reus, Zoidl or Roe will aim to limit the losses against the best puncheurs.
The stage begins with the usual business of several riders trying to go clear. A first attempt has been shut down quickly:
Sella, Pirazzi, Hofstede, Georgiev, Carboni, Magnusson, Centrone, Medvedev, Petrus and Skaarseth couldn't get away..
Two of them would try again, eventually establishing a gap and being joined by a third rider to build the break of the day:
Pirazzi - who also takes the first and only intermediate sprint
Magnusson
Hofer
Pirazzi would also go and dominate the mountain sprints:
KoM#1 (Cat1): Pirazzi 16pts, Hofer 12, Magnusson 10, Le Bon 8, Aulas 6, Rosa 4, vd Hugenhaben 2
KoM#2 (Cat2): Pirazzi 10, Hofer 8, Magnusson 6, Kreuziger 4, Vichot 2
KoM#3 (Cat1): Pirazzi 16, Magnusson 12, Hofer 10, Kreuziger 8, Hardy 6, Roux 4, Jérôme 2
On this climb - the Holme Moss, certainly the most challenging of the day - Pirazzi would go clear from the two breakaway companions, who are already more than a minute behind with now 51km remaining. The peloton a further minute in arrears, already chasing with In-n-Out currently as the team with the most shifts at the front of the pack.
KoM#4 (Cat2): Pirazzi 10, Gradek 8, Kreuziger 6, Jérôme 4, Weber 2
The peloton narrowing the gap to 49 seconds with now 22km left. Kreuziger and Nzeke now leading the chase and Pirazzi's breakaway attempt is over soon: he's caught on the last climb before they go down to Sheffield with 14km remaining.
Provisional KoM: Pirazzi 52, Hofer 30, Magnusson 28
Nothing more happened until the final 3.5km of the stage: Davison and Nzeke as the main support for Xero, who are also leading the bunch (83 riders) into the final now. Positioning will be become a big factor and with crosswinds going around 30kmh now, the field is quite stretched with some of the strongest puncheurs moving to the front in the meantime:
Nzeke
Roux
vd Hugenhaben
Chaves
Reus
Gradek
Squire
Bratashcuk
Kratochvila
Pellaud
Becerra
Diggle
Schoonbroodt
Vichot
Monfort
Marentes
Dennis
Kebede
Wyss
Gilbert
Bille
Roe
1.6km to go, it's still flat with the short uphill finish being just about 250metres long:
Nzeke
Roux with a small gap
vd Hugenhaben - Kratochvila - Reus
Vichot - Gradek
Chaves - Becerra - Marentes
Bratashcuk now in the most promising positions behind the leading duo
Pellaud
Dennis
Monfort - Schoonbroodt
Wyss
Diggle
And now they enter the final climb: Roux leaving Nzeke's wheel to launch his uphill sprint! Still a small gap on the peloton, where things are becoming quite packed now:
Hugenhaben, Vichot, Wyss, Chaves and Gilbert amongst those with the best positions now - with also Gradek, Kratochvila and Reus still going strong..
Kebede, Roe, Monfort/Schoonbroodt, Pellaud, Marentes/Becerra, Bille and Cuming on the further positions..
Roux goes strong though and his gap is growing on the first hundred metres of the steep ascent!
Nzeke still ahead of Hugenhaben and Vichot.. Chaves, Gilbert and also Monfort moving forward, going past Kratochvila/Reus!
Roux on his way to take the opener..
Bratashcuk, Wyss, Roe, Kebede, Pellaud behind the mentioned riders, who are still trying to hang on with Roux..
Dennis totally cracking and losing a lot of ground on this steep climb!
Roux takes it and there's a clear gap on the following riders:
Hugenhaben with an advantage over Vichot, Gilbert and Chaves now that Nzeke is fading!
Monfort, Kebede, Wyss, Schoonbroodt going past Nzeke as well..
Gaps are rewarded quickly today:
+ 7" vd Hugenhaben
+ 10" Gilbert and Vichot - a great uphill from Gilbert in particular
+ 12" Chaves and Monfort
+ 15" Kebede and Schoonbroodt
+ 19" Wyss, Nzeke, Becerra, Kratochvila
+ 23" Marentes and Lietaer, who came from further behind
Several riders finishing with different gaps then: Reus (31 seconds) as 19th, Bratashcuk (31sec), Bille (31sec), Roe (33sec)...
+ 1'01" for Zoidl as one of today's losers amongst the GC contenders
+ 1'05" for Cunego
+ 1'49" for Kreuziger as 50th (though he obviously worked for his captain today)
+ 2'44" for Diggle (same here)
+ 3'02" for Dennis, who had a terrible finish to probably lose out on GC hopes here
Roux with a great start into the tour though: certainly what he had hoped for. Gaining time prior to the timetrial - crucial seconds gained. He's leading the GC by 15 seconds on Hugenhaben and 22 seconds on Gilbert. Obviously, just a first step. But definitely some valuable gains already.
