Deutschland Tour - Stage 5
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-05-000.jpg

After yesterday’s big mountain stage which saw Tim Wellens take both stage win and race lead, today we are to the flat stages. But with the stage being placed where it is, the chances of a breakaway win are high, and even more given that the stage isn’t as flat as the previous stage winners Guerao and Cavendish would like

Six riders form the breakaway of the day, without any dangerous riders for GC. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon is again in the BotD, and as they are 11 KoM points in offer today, he could become the new leader if he takes them all. The other riders are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Veyhe, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png van der Hoorn, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Gichora, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Calmejane and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Okbamariam

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-05-001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon takes the first 5 points of the day with easy ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Calmejane and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png van der Hoorn, moving now to second in KoM classification, 5 points behind Mutsumine. At some point pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Bettiol must have attacked from the bunch, as he’s now part of the breakaway, which holds a 5-minute gap, but there are still 180 kms left in the stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-05-002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon wins also the second and last KoM sprint of the day, thus becaming the new KoM leader, by just one point ahead of Mutsumine. The bunch had reduced the gap to 2 minutes before this climb, but the gap will rise again with the sprint for the points, which has left the gap around 4 minutes with 60 kms to go, a gap that the bunch should be able to control, so the sprinters fight today for the win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-05-003.jpg

Only 10 kms to the finish line, but the breakaway is still holding a 50-second gap to the bunch. Kraftwerk and SPAR have been working for a lot of kms, and might lack now the strenght to bring them back

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-05-004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Veyhe is using his strenght in the flat to drop everyone in the leading group but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon. With 6 kms to go, the gap is still 48 seconds to the bunch. We got noticed that there’s one rider that should not being dropped that has been dropped due to a puncture; pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Vasyliv

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-05-005.jpg

The breakaway has been caught with less than 4 kms left, and while in the left side of the road there are lots of riders trying to follow each others wheels, in the right side, both SPAR and Kraftwerk are building their sprint trains, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Haidar Anuwar and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Nepomnyachsniy leading out pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Guerao, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Irvine and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kreder doing the same with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-05-006.jpg

Obviously the trains were much stronger than other riders, so with 2 kms to go, and both trains leaving only the sprinter and the final lead-out rider, they are getting a small gap to the rest of the group, where Fablok was trying to do a sprint train, but obviously failed

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-05-007.jpg

With 800 metres to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish hasn’t started yet his sprint, but Kreder has allowed his team-mate to already have a little gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Guerao, who is now starting his sprint, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Manarelli, who has started his sprint earlier to have a chance to fight for at least a top3

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-05-008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish only starts his sprint in the last 500 metres, but with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Guerao having no real speed today, his only rival is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Maranelli, who with 300 metres to go looks to be fading, so it’s going to be an easy win for the Manx Missile. Behind the first four riders, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Guardini, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Mansilla are coming really fast, looking to beat Guerao for the final podium place with their current speed

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-05-009.jpg

Mark Cavendish takes his second stage win in the race, after a supreme lead-out by his team-mates that left him without rivals today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-05-010.jpg

Guerao finishes second barely ahead of Silvestre, after Maranelli exploded in the last 100 metres and dropped back to fourth place. Mansilla completes the top5, followed by Guardini, Keukeleire, Reinhardt, Yamamoto and Reimer

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-05-011.jpg

Tim Wellens obviously continues being race leader, with no gaps happening today. The only change in GC is Vasyliv falling almost 30 places in GC after losing 3 minutes thanks to his puncture in the last 5 kms.

Cavendish regains the Points classification lead after his second stage win in the race, being 7 points ahead of Guerao
