Deutschland Tour - Stage 4
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-000.jpg

First mountain stage in the race with finish in Arosa, and while stage 7 is harder and can be considered as the “Queen Stage” in this stage we have the two hardest climbs in the whole race, including the only HC climb, Oberalpass.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Vermeltfoort and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Spengler are the two only riders being succesfull to breakaway in the early part of the stage. But being both very weak climbers, we can expect another riders to try it in Oberalpass

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-001.jpg

In the first kms of Oberalpass, almost the same riders attack again and again, but always pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Zielinski is able to bring them back, as a group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Sarmiento, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Faglum Karlsson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Anguilet, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Chevrier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schir might be hard to control later on. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Spengler and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Vermeltfoort have been already caught, as the current speed is really high with all those attacks, and several sprinters are already dropped from the group, with 120 kms to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-002.jpg

Things got a bit calmer until the last 4 kms of climb, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Quintana attacked, being followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Mutsumine and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon, the latters looking for KoM points

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov took easily the most points in this climb, ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Mutsumine. The Japanese rider will continue another day as KoM unless the breakaway can score points in the final climb

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon couldn’t keep up with the other riders, and was back in the bunch right after reaching the summit. The gap in the top was already 3 minutes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-004.jpg

In the second climb of the day, whose summit is less than 50 kms away from the finish, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov took again the max points, but with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Mutsumine being second this time, the Japanese will have a 6-point lead in KoM after the stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-005.jpg

There’s a interesting group attack using a intermediate sprint with 35 kms to go. Five riders have attacked, neither of them being real threats for the stage win, but all of them are very decent climbers, like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Rodrigues, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Iturria, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Bagot, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Frank and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Grigrian

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-006.jpg

Only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Rodrigues and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Bagot were able to last until this uphill zone, despite Spotify and Festina using their domestiques to have a high pace, and Ignatenko tried to join them when the uphill zone came. With 22 kms to go, the current gap between the three first riders to the bunch is almost 3 minutes, with Rodrigues and Bagot being 1’10 ahead of the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier doesn’t want to wait until the final 4 kms and attacks with 21 kms to go! And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Pantano Gómez goes inmediately on his wheel, following orders from his leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-008.jpg

Terrific effort by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Lövkvist to bring the U25 leader back on his own! That was a first advice by the Frenchman that Spotify saved perfectly

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Roche is clearly having troubles with the current rhythm, and this only leads to more attacks. This time is the German youngster pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Marquez! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Kudus look to have noticed the move earlier than other rivals and might avoid that they get a gap quickly

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-010.jpg

All four riders joined and with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Kudus’ counter-attack, they have actually created a gap to the group, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Lövkvist is having again the responsability of doing the chase, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Sarmiento and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran behind him, looking to help as Minions have missed the split. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier also tried to follow those riders who attacked, but their rhythm was too much for the Dutchman, who is dropping back to the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-011.jpg

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov is aware of the situation behind him, and has attacked his breakaway-mates in order to have a chance of a surprise stage win, as his gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier’s group is less than 1 minute with 16 kms left in the stage. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier has avoided being caught by the leader’s group, but is now without any company, something very dangerous in the terrain that the riders will ride on in the next 10 kms

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-012.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Lövkvist has made it again and has brought that dangerous group on his own, leaving only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov ahead of the group with 10 kms to go. And his gap isn’t higher than 30 seconds, so the stage win will be for one of the best climbers in the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-014.jpg

Another attack of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz with 7 kms to go, in the same moment as the group catches pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov. But he didn’t go anywhere, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Vasyliv took control of the bunch working for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens lead the 40-rider group starting the climb to Arosa, with 4 kms left in the stage. Both riders are setting a very high rhythm now, hoping that they won’t need an attack to reduce the amount of riders in this group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier is attacking with 3 kms to go (and 2 to the summit of the climb) and only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens are able to follow him, although pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran and Kudus are attacking from the group, as they didn’t have the best placement in the start of the climb, not allowing them to follow Lecuisinier’s attack

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-017.jpg

The four big pre-race favourites are performing like they should, as with 2 kms to go we have a 4-rider group in the head of the race, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran. A minute behind them, there’s a 14-rider group, which includes riders as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Nerz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schelling, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Olivier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Marquez and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Nazaret. Race leader Roche is in another group almost 2 minutes behind the leaders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens lead the leading group under the Flamme Rouge, where the KoM points are awarded. The final km is rather flat, and all of them are saving energies to get that stage win. The Belgian will be the new race leader unless pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier takes the win and Wellens finishes fourth. The gap to Kudus’ group stands at 1 minute

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-019.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-020.jpg

The sprint starts with almost 800 metres to go! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz should be the fastest, but he’s also the worst placed. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier is almost at pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran’s level barely after starting his sprint

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-021.jpg

300 metres to go and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens is starting to struggle against the other riders, who seems to be much quicker, especially pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz, who at this point is almost 10 km/h faster than Wellens, and also way faster than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier can’t sprint anymore and will have to settle for fourth place, but the battle for the win seems to be between pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens, who has amazingly recovered a high speed just in time for the final 100 metres

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-023.jpg

All riders are exhausted when crossing the line, so no celebrations, but it’s very clear that Tim Wellens has won in Arosa! Fantastic result for the Belgian, who will be the new race leader, following the pattern of winning the stage and getting the race lead that has happened in all previous stages

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-024.jpg

Second place for Herklotz, who might have won if he hadn’t started his sprint the last of the group, just ahead of Uran, with Lecuisiner taking fourth as he was the first to surrender in the sprint.

Total surprise rider the one getting the fifth place in the stage, as Gilanipoor is a not well-known rider, and, as he leads home a group with Marquez, Kudus, Schelling, Olivier, Chiarello and Nazaret. That group will lose slightly more than 1 minute to Wellens. There are also tiny gaps between some riders of that group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-025.jpg

A bad day for Roche sees him lose almost 4 minutes, same as Kiserlovski, another rider who didn’t have a good day today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-026.jpg

As we have already said, Wellens is the new race leader, and the top4 in GC are the same riders who finished in the top4 in the stage, although the order isn’t the same. Lecuisinier is the U25 leader, and is 36 seconds behind Wellens in GC, while Uran and Herklotz are 49 and 56 behind the Belgian. Kudus is fifth, but the gap is almost 2 minutes, while Olivier, Marquez, Gilanipoor, Kunshin and Chiarello close the GC top10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-04-027.jpg

Wellens not only takes over the race lead, but also is the new leader in the Points classification, two points ahead of Cavendish. Berg leads now the Teams classification, thanks to having 3 riders in the top11 of the stage
