Deutschland Tour - Stage 3

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-000.jpg

Third stage in Germany, and we finally get to the decisive stages of the race. Today we have a hilly stage which ends in a short climb, totally suited for the faster puncheurs of this field

There are around 20 kms from the start to the first climb of the day. So several riders attempted to get in the breakaway, but Novatek and Festina didn’t allow anyone to get in the breakaway.

Only when in the climb, three riders would be able to escape from the group, and they would cross the top of the climb in that order; pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Le Roux and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Naud

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nvo.png Kasperkiewicz was the next one to attack, but again the bunch, this time led by Puma, didn’t want the breakaway to be that big, and only when the Pole, and also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Le Roux, were dropped back to the bunch, they stopped chasing. After a few kms, another Indosat rider, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Bettiol joined Rabon and Naud in the breakaway, which finally seems to be allowed to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-002.jpg

Only 50 kms left in the stage, and the riders are in the second climb of the day, which is also the hardest one. As pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Cavendish is the race leader, Kraftwerk is surprisingly helping with the chase, despite pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Mehr-Wenige being dropped because of a crash with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Anguilet. The leading trio have only 1’30 of advantage to the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Mutsumine attacks from the bunch in the same moment that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon is getting dropped from the breakaway, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Naud has increased his rhythm

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-004.jpg

The Meiji rider was obviously the most fresh of all four breakaway riders, so he took easily the points in this climb, ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Bettiol, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Rabon and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Naud. In the bunch, the race leader, and also most of the top sprinters have been dropped, and also a rider like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Pantano Gómez. Anyway, the gap to the breakaway has rised to almost 2 minutes again

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Mutsumine is now alone in the head of the race, with the rest of the breakaway having been caught by the bunch with 30 kms to go. The Japanese rider is about to start the last climb of the day with a gap of 2’25 to a bunch led by eBuddy and Puma

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-006.jpg

Nothing happened until the last 10 kms, when pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mei.png Mutsumine was about to be caught thanks to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo’s work during the previous 20 kms. In that moment, with 7 kms left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Jang launched an attack which was followed by several riders, the most important of them being pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Koretzky, but also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Herrada, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Bagot, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Zakarin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Rosskopf and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Frank

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Koretzky knew that no one would work with him in that group, so the Frenchman attacked from that group, who was inmediately caught by the bunch. With 6 kms to go he only has 10 seconds and might be wasting his chance to get a top result today if he fails with this move

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Herrada has bridged the gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Koretzky all by himself, but in the bunch is now his team-mate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Castroviejo pulling there, in a strange tactic decision. You can spot all the favourites for the stage and for the GC in the first places of the group, with Wellens, Kudus, Reimer, Kelderman, Herklotz, Uran, Boswell, Lecuisinier, Roche and Olivier. The uphill finish is about to come, with a 3-km climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-009.jpg

Eritel has been able to catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Koretky and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Herrada with 2 kms to go, and now is all about the uphill sprint between the GC riders and the puncheurs

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Roche makes his move before the Flamme Rouge, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier try to follow the Irish rider. No one else seems to have noticed about Roche’s move, but there’s some time left to do it

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Roche and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens are breaking free to fight for the stage win, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Kudus couldn’t follow them, but that pair is also putting space to the rest of the bunch, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Úran and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Boswell are pulling there, with Puma’s duo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Herklotz being rather passive

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-012.jpg

Inside of the final 500 metres now, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens can’t follow pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Roche anymore, and might be in risk of getting caught by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Kudus in the line. In the bunch, everything is as it was a few hundreds ago

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-013.jpg

Nicolas Roche wins in Ladstatt! Fantastic win for the ageing Irishman, being the first to attack in the final climb, and getting the reward for it

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-014.jpg

Wellens is second, less than 10 seconds behind Roche, while Lecuisinier beats Kudus for the final podium place. Both will lose around 20 seconds to Roche. Boswell will lose a few extra seconds, after coming really close to that duo in the line

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-015.jpg

Great sixth place for Uran, and a disappointing seventh for Kelderman, who was the main favourite for the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-016.jpg

Herklotz leads home the bunch, ahead of Olivier, Sakalou and Koretzky. They all lose around 50 seconds to Roche, and half a minute to Lecuisinier, something not good for the German’s U25 jersey hopes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Germany/Germany-03-017.jpg

Roche is obviously the race leader, with 18 seconds on Wellens, 34 on Lecuisinier, 42 on Kudus, 47 on Boswell, 55 on Uran and Kelderman and 1’07 on Herklotz and the rest of the bunch
