Tour de France - Stage 16

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-000.jpg

Only 6 stages left in the race and today we will see the final hilly stage of the race. Today we end in Mende, a climb well known by all riders, as is always important in Paris-Nice and has been several times in the last years. Alexey Lutsenko won in Mende in February in order to win Paris-Nice, and the Kazakh is one of the favourites for the win today.

Simon Spilak will be looking to increase his lead over Phinney and Gesink, with the final TT on his mind and the possibility of losing the race with the current gaps

Despite the low amount of KoM points in offer in this stage, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Koch, who is 4th in KoM classification, around 50 points behind Lutsenko, is one of the five riders on the BotD, with the other four being

These riders were never allowed to have a gap bigger than 3 minutes, with Spotify, UBS and Festina being working all the stage. The stage win is in the bunch, with riders like Spilak, Gesink or Sagan being the big favourites

The gap at the start of the first climb of the day was just 2 minutes, and Taaramae decided that the rhythm was still slow, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Wöhrer went full-gas from the first slope of the climb, making the gap to be reduced to only 1 minute in just 1 km of climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Koch attacks initially for the KoM points, but the rhythm in the bunch is extremely high that the rest of the group would be caught before reaching the top of this climb, so he was left alone in the head of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-005.jpg

In the bunch, once pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Wohrer was done, it was the turn for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schir, as Amador wanted also the rhythm to be high, and after the Swiss it was pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Blikra working for Wellens. This meant that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Koch only had 30 seconds when the group passed through the summit

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Koch was finally caught 25 kms away from the finish, just when the descent of the previous climb was ending. There were around 90 riders in the bunch in this moment, maybe a high number considering how fast was ridden that climb, with the biggest names dropped being pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Izagirre and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Borges, who are clearly injured from crashes in the previous days

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-007.jpg

Despite not having any rider ahead of the bunch, UBS didn’t want the race to slow down, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schelling kept setting a high rhythm in the flat which led to the penultimate climb of the day, Col de Chabrits. All the favourites are placed in the first 20 places of the group, so none of them should have troubles in this climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-008.jpg

Nothing special happened in this climb, just that Spotify took over from UBS with two riders, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Bystrom and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Blikra, and kept the high rhythm. You can spot Spilak, Phinney, Gesink, Taaramae, Sagan, Amador, Lutsenko, Wellens and Guldhammer in the first 15 places of the group. Now only 9 kms left in the stage, with Mende starting with less than 5 km to the finish

Just 5 km to go, and the riders are about to start the Col de la Croix Neuve with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Spilak in a perfect place to follow any attacks

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-010.jpg

A lot has changed in the first 500 metres of this climb, as now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney is leading the group, setting a high pace which is avoiding any attacks, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sagan on the American’s wheel. Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Spilak has disappear from the first places and is completely blocked to go anywhere if there are attacks now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sagan look to be opening a little gap to the rest of the bunch, but it’s just visual. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Gesink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Formolo are actually really close to them. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Spilak is in the back of the leading group, and he needs to find a way to overtake this riders if he wants to fight for the stage win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney’s rhythm was too high for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sagan, and the American is opening a 10-second gap to the Slovak, who also has a little gap to the group, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Spilak has finally find his way through it and is attacking to close the gap to Phinney. Just 3 km to go and 1’5 in the climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Spilak has almost closed the gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney with 700 metres left in the climb, dropping pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sagan, who is now in a group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Gesink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Taaramäe 15 seconds behind the Slovenian. Another 20 seconds further behind there’s a 12-rider group which includes most of the rest of the top10 riders, plus pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Demare, but the team who has worked more in the stage, Spotify, is missing his leader in the group, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens is in the middle of the bunch and will lose a lot of time today. Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Keinath isn’t in this group, and is likely to lose his fifth place in GC to Taaramae

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Spilak have reached the top of this climb with an advantage of 10 seconds on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Gesink, and 15 further on a group with Taaramae, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador couldn’t follow this riders, and is on the next group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney is under the Flamme Rouge while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Spilak isn’t able to follow his wheel and the win for the American looks clear

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-016.jpg

Just 500 metres for Phinney who is going to take his third stage win in the race, and might even open a gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Spilak if he continues his sprint like it’s now. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Gesink is losing 15 seconds to Phinney, while the chasing group will fight for the fourth place in the stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-017.jpg

Taylor Phinney wins in Mende! Another stage for the American, who will increase his lead in the Points classification and will reduce at least in 8 seconds his gap to Spilak in GC in a stage that he might be hoping to not lose time

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-018.jpg

Spilak and Gesink finish second and third, but the question is if there will be any gap between them. Spilak will continue being the race leader for sure, but his lead can be 46 seconds or something around 40

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-019.jpg

Sagan wins the battle for the fourth place, finishing ahead of Taaramae, Guldhammer, Dekker and Yates, with all of them losing around 30 seconds to Phinney

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-020.jpg

Amador is ninth today, 1’10 after Phinney, and basically loses most of his chances of finishing in the podium of the race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-021.jpg

Formolo closes the top10 of the stage, leading a group with Haig, Hirt, Slagter and Vasyliv, who will lose a few more seconds than Amador

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-022.jpg

Nibali loses around 2 minutes today, while Wellens leads a group which includes Arndt, Pinot and Brambilla

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-023.jpg

Terrible day for Keinath, who ends up losing over 3 minutes and will drop to sixth in GC. Not a good sign ahead of three mountain stages

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-16-024.jpg

37 seconds! That’s the new gap between Spilak and Phinney in GC after the jury considered that there was a 9-second gap between both in the stage, while Gesink loses 10 further and is now 1’48 behind Spilak. 3 mountain stages and a TT awaits the riders the next four days, with Spilak being the clear favourite to win his second Tour de France six years later
