Tour de France - Stage 15
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-000.jpg

Yesterday we saw one of the most epic breakaway in TDF history, with Nico Keinath gaining 21 minutes on the bunch, which helped the German rider to jump to the 5th place in GC, but tomorrow there are no mountains. Is the final flat stage before Paris, and the sprinters’ teams will try to control the stage so it ends in a sprint. But the route isn’t very helpful for a chase, and a breakaway win today in Albi is very likely

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-001.jpg

There are seven riders who have noticed of the possibility of a breakaway win today, and want to be TDF stage winners

One curiousity about the breakaway riders is that they won’t fight for the KoM points, as they showed in the first climb of the day. At that point, their advantage to the bunch, only led by Festina, is around 8 minutes.

There are less than 100 km left in the stage when the breakaway goes through the intermediate sprint, that again is undisputed. The bunch has bridged the gap a little, and now they only have 5 minutes, a gap that could not be enough in the latter part of the stage

But the biggest news in the stage is the very high winds that the riders are facing, over 40 km/h. I bet that everyone remembers what Strava did a few days back, destroying the bunch in the echelons. Strava lost yesterday pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Fonseca, but even with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Didier in the break, they still have enough horsepower in the flat to do the same today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-004.jpg

50 km to go, and while the gap is now around 3 minutes, there are now several sprinter teams working in the front of the bunch, like Evonik, Puma and Nemiroff, together with Festina. Right now, it looks like we’ll have a mass sprint finish in Albi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-005.jpg

There’s a rather big crash in the back of the bunch, with 18 riders hitting the tarmac. And one of them is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Grmay! The Ethiopian, who was 10th in GC after yesterday’s breakaway is the best placed of those who crashed. But there are also a few top20 contenders, like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schelling, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Lövkvist, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Carapaz or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Cort Nielsen in the ground. And also a rider like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Porsev who should be a contender for the stage win today.

But the one who suffers the most from the crash is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Florian Morizot, who is forced to retire of the race with a broken wrist

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-006.jpg

20 km to go and the gap now is just over the minute. All the sprinter teams are using every rider they have to catch the breakaway, and this is being worthy for them at the moment.

Grmay’s group won’t make it back to the bunch, and the Ethiopian will lose his top10 spot to Peter Sagan after the stage, as they are 4 minutes behind the bunch at this point

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-007.jpg

With 17 km to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Mundle can’t follow anymore the rest of the breakaway and drops back to the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-008.jpg

Just 10 km left in the stage, but in the last kms, the breakaway has managed to increase the gap to 1’20,, as it seems like the bunch is running out of power to catch them. Although the breakaway is being clearly led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Bilbao, who is clearly the strongest

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-009.jpg

And now it’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Gunman the one dropped from the breakaway with 7 km to go! 1’05 is the gap now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-010.jpg

5 km to go and the work of Puma is giving its fruits, as the gap has significantly been reduced to only 25 seconds. The breakaway riders look wasted, and now it’s time for the sprint trains to be formed

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-011.jpg

3 km to go and the breakaway is being caught right now. With the high wind coming from the right side of the road, the sprint trains are close to the left fences

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-012.jpg

2 km to go! Puma has really won the battle for the best lead-out today, and now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Felline is starting his sprint with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Demare on his wheel, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Dzamastagic is trying to put pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen in the best possible place

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-013.jpg

Just a few hundreds to be under the Flamme Rouge, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Dzamastagic seems to have forget of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen and is sprinting on his own, as Puma’s train is failing now, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Felline unable to pass pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, blocking pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Demare’s sprint. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho keeps being on Demare’s wheel, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Keukeleire and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Boeckmans are in Van Stayen’s

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-014.jpg

And now Evonik is leading with both riders! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Dzamastagic is on the lead with 700 metres to go, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen is starting to gain back the ground he lost before, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Demare is trying to avoid the Belgian from deciding the sprint just now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-015.jpg

Evonik is fading! Both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Dzamastagic and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen are losing a lot of momentum, and with 400 metres to go they have been caught by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Boeckmans, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Keukeleire is totally blocked by Dzamastagic. The Belgian is the one coming faster!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Demare has now a slim lead over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Boeckmans and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt with 250 metres to go, but the other two are coming faster than the French champion. And watch out for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho, who might fight for a podium place with his current speed

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Coutinho will be short of space to get a podium, even the win, but the fourth place will be his. With just 100 metres to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Demare looks set to take a second stage win in the race, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Reinhardt and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Boeckmans closely fighting for the second place

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-018.jpg

Arnaud Demare wins in Albi!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-019.jpg

Reinhardt somehow holds both Boeckmans and Coutinho to keep the second place, with Van Stayen back in fifth place

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-020.jpg

Keukeleire, Dzamastagic, Dockx, Arndt and Kragh Andersen round up the top10 of this stage, where these sprinter have gained a minute on the bunch, not that they will care anyway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-15-021.jpg

Grmay and Schelling have end up losing almost 8 minutes on the bunch, so Grmay drops to 14th place and Schelling is now out of the top20.

Also, the fight for the Green Jersey gets tighter, with 5 riders in less than 20 points, although with the remaining stages being 3 mountain stages, 1 hilly stage, 1 TT and the Champs Elysses stage, only Phinney, Spilak and Taaramae have realistic chances of winning this classification
