Tour de France - Stage 11

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-000.jpg

This race doesnÂ’t have any easy days. After yesterdayÂ’s Strava show in the crosswinds, today we are back to the hills. Today the stage will finish in Oyonnax, with a very interesting combo of climbs in the last 50 kms, that could led to a nice battle between the puncheur and the GC riders for the stage win. Or a breakaway could be succesfull for the first time in the race!

Michael van Stayen will wear the Green jersey today, as Phinney, the leader of the Points classification, has to wear the Yellow jersey as GC leader

Three riders have been able to breakaway from the group, and it seems like everyone is happy with this and they are gaining a lot of ground very quickly. Surprisingly no Lutsenko in the breakaway, but this doesnÂ’t mean that he didnÂ’t try it.

What did i say about pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko? Forget it, as after a few kms of calm, the Kazakh has attacked, bringing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Borges with him. Initially, Wiesenhof and Evonik tried to chase them down, but they quickly gave up, as everone in the race is already tired of having to chase a rider that goes for KoM points

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-003.jpg

Obviously itÂ’s not a surprise that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko is first in the first climb of the day, increasing his lead over Sagan in KoM classification

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-004.jpg

As always, the breakaway doesnÂ’t fight for the intermediate sprint, and points just goes to the one who were in front in that moment

Intermediate Sprint - Marigny

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko 6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haas 4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/prp.png Borges 2

Although in KoMs thereÂ’s always a fight for the points, even more if you have the leader of KoM in the breakaway, together with the 4th. ItÂ’s useless to fight against pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko though.

Cote de Clairvaux les Lacs - Cat.3

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-005.jpg

The bunch isnÂ’t allowing these riders to have never more than 3 minutes, and because of that, the rhythm is never low. This might cost riders with problems with hills and also riders with a bad day to lose a lot of time today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-006.jpg

What a job by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schir! Once the hardest climb of the day started - also the only Cat.2 climb of the day the rider of UBS started to set the highest possible rhythm in the bunch. Once he was almost done, he had reduced the gap to LutsenkoÂ’s group to only 1 minute - from that group Fritsch had been dropped - and has destroyed the bunch. The group has been reduced to around 100 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-007.jpg

And it seems like Wiesenhof and Festina doesnÂ’t want this stop and are putting Kastrantas and Wohrer to relay in the front!

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Hermans are the only two riders left in the head of the race. They really donÂ’t have a chance to win the stage, even less with Lutsenko looking more to get KoM points - which might a smart strategy, as in the mountain stages he would be unlikely to get too much points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-008.jpg

But when the time to sprint for the points arrived, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Hermans wasnÂ’t able to follow the Kazakh anymore, and with the bunch going slower now, LutsenkoÂ’s gap has rised to almost 3 minutes with 30 km to go and 2 minor climbs left and a big downhill

Col de la Croix de la Serra - Cat.2

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Kung 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-009.jpg

But by the time that the bunch was in the next climb, a Cat.4 one, LutsenkoÂ’s gap has been reduced to 1Â’30 and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Hermans had been already caught before even starting the climb. Several teams, like Evonik, Puma, Festina and Wiesenhof are trying to bring pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko back to the group.

Cote du Bugnon - Cat.4

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko starts the final climb of the day, whose summit is 10 km away from the finish in Oyonnax, with only a 35-second gap, which wonÂ’t be enough for him. Now itÂ’s time for the puncheurs like Sagan or the better GC puncheurs like Spilak or Gesink to attack in this climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-011.jpg

But it has to be pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker the first to attack, as no one else was willing to do it. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Taaramäe and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates are following him very quickly. There are still 2 kms to the summit of this climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko couldnÂ’t follow the trio once they caught him, and these three riders are looking for a surprise stage win, as neither of them are very strong in hills. Specially for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Taaramae, it would be a nice reward for him after crashing out of the lead and losing any chance of winning the race

Col du Senter - Cat.3

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Taaramae 6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker 4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates 2

In the top of this climb, the leading trio have more than 30 seconds into the bunch, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Spilak and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Gesink are trying to attack, but there arenÂ’t succesfull. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Demare is in the first places of a 40-rider group that has all the GC riders, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen is the back of the group, clearly having suffered from the high rhythm and the attacks. But both look to be ready for a sprint, if the riders in front are caught

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Taaramae is taking most of the responsabilities in the descent, making the gap to rise until the 50-second mark. In the group behind, some domestiques from the teams that are fighting for low top10 places in GC are pulling, as these three riders are in that fight now, and they gaining a minute isnÂ’t welcomed by riders like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Nibali or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-014.jpg

The stage win is in the leading group, thatÂ’s for sure, as with 3 km left, they still have a 40-second gap to a group where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Spilak is now doing all the work. Now the big question is the time that theyÂ’ll recover in GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-015.jpg

Still 2 kms to go, but coming out of the final corner, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Taaramae launches his sprint, trying to surprise pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates. The gap is now 35 seconds, and if this progression keeps going, they might not win any time at the end

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-016.jpg

Under the Flamme Rouge pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Taaramae has a little gap to the other two, but neither of them had started their sprints until now, so the Estonian isnÂ’t safe

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-017.jpg

Unreal situation, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Taaramae had stopped sprinting for like 300 metres, allowing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates to catch him, and once they did, the Estonian started to sprint again

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-018.jpg

The efforts in the descent and starting his sprint earlier has costed pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Taaramae any chance of winning the stage, as with 350 metres left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker has already passed him, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates will do it any time soon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-019.jpg

100 metres to go and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates is coming quicker than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker, but does the Brit have enough space to pass the Dutch rider?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-020.jpg

He doesnÂ’t, and Thomas Dekker is the winner in Oyonnax! ItÂ’s the eighth time that the Dutch rider wins a stage in the race, tying with Pluchkin and Swift as the second rider with most stage wins in the MG era, only behind Tom Boonen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-021.jpg

Yates can only be second ahead of Taaramae. All three riders will win back some time in the GC, but how much?

The clock says 35 seconds by the time that Van Stayen crossed the line in fourth place, just ahead of Phinney, something that allows the American to retain his lead in the Points classification

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-022.jpg

Demare can only be sixth, while the rest of the top10 is completed by Sagan, Brambilla, Guldhammer and Spilak

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-023.jpg

This is the first stage win in the TDF for Dekker since 2011. A lot of time, thatÂ’s for sure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-11-024.jpg

Not a lot of changes in the GC in this stage, with the only remarkable one being that Yates now overtakes Sagan for the sixth place in GC
