Tour de France - Stage 4
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-000.jpg

First timetrial of the race today in Arbois. 25 km is the distance that the riders will have to do today, and with a climb in the start, this won’t be an easy day for lots of riders. The race leader, Peter Sagan, is very likely to lose his lead today, with the likes of Taaramae, Phinney, Gesink and Spilak less than minute behind him in the GC and being so better than him in the speciality.

High wind in the course in the early stages. This will affect those TTers who start very early, like Tenorio, although he must be still injured.

Despite his injury, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio sets a decent early time, with a time of 37’42, which would put him in the lead for a long time

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-001.jpg

Some riders have been close to the Spaniard’s time, like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Hussein, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Nerz or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Ivars, who are within 30 seconds of Tenorio’s time, but after more than 30 riders have finished, no one has been able to beat him.

But pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Tzortzakis is the one who gets the closest to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio, only 12 seconds slower than the Spanish rider. The wind strenght has rised, so this can be an explanation for the Greek’s time, as he wasn’t really fast on the intermediate splits

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-002.jpg

Another Iberia rider, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Bagdonas, is the first rider to beat Tenorio’s time, although only by cenths of a second

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Richie Porte sets a new best time by only 2 seconds to the Iberia duo!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-004.jpg

Inmediately after Porte comes pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Cataford, who is the best TTer that is not a GC contender. And he is able to prove that, as he jumps to the first place in the standings, 8 seconds faster than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Porte

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-005.jpg

Finally, after lot of time, another rider that might challenge for a great result today, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kangert. And the Estonian really performs today, setting the fastest time so far, 16 seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Cataford, and closing on the 37 minutes mark

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-006.jpg

Really nice time for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Cort Nielsen, just over 30 seconds worse than Kangert, but less than 10 seconds worse than Tenorio

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Izagirre was a big dark horse for the stage win, and was setting the best times in all the course, until the very end, when he choked in the final 2 kms and couldn’t improve Kangert by only 1 second

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-008.jpg

There goes pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador, the big loser of yesterday’s stage, after losing almost 2 minutes to the other GC contenders in Mur-de-Bretagne. He needs to do a massive TT to gain some time back if he wants to win the race.

It’s not a good sign that he can’t improve neither Izagirre’s or Kangert’s time on top of the climb. At least he climbs to first in the second split, although equal in time to Izagirre. And at the end, he can only be second, 1 second after Kangert. Really disappointing TT for Amador if he can’t beat riders he should clearly beat, even more in this course

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-009.jpg

The next GC contender to start his race is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Nibali. The Italian also lost some time yesterday, but not as much as Amador.

The Italian is going a little slower than Amador, which at the finish translated into a 17-second lose to Amador (18 to Kangert)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-010.jpg

Some minor top10 contenders came after Nibali, like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Brambilla (1’13), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Keinath (44’’), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Haig (39’’), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Formolo (1’49) or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Novak (38’’), but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Thomas Dekker is flying now! The Dutchman is the quickest in all intermediate splits, before beating Kangert’s time by 11 seconds, just over 37 minutes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer sets a pretty decent time, only 36 seconds slower than Dekker

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens does what he could have expected before starting the day. His time is 30 seconds worse than Dekker’s

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-013.jpg

The ITT World Champion and stage favourite is on course now! And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney is not disappointing his fans, as he is setting the fastest times everywhere in the course, being 30 seconds faster than Dekker after the second check point.

And the American obviously sets the fastest time in the finish when he arrives. First rider under 37 minutes! He has improved Dekker’s time by 42 seconds!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Spilak isn’t putting good times after the two first check points, being almost half a minute down on Phinney.

And in the finish it gets even worse, as he ends up losing 49 seconds, which is way more time than he must have wanted

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Gesink goes and beats Phinney’s time in the first check point! It’s only one second, so in the second check point he’s already losing 10 seconds to the American.

In the finish line, Gesink sets the second fastest time, 19 seconds behind Phinney

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Taaramäe can’t improve neither Gesink or Phinney in the top of the climb, but after the second check point he is the one who is the closest to Phinney, being only 4 seconds behind him.

The Estonian arrives to the finish, and his time is... just 6 seconds worse than Phinney! Phinney is going to win the stage, but Taaramae is going to be the new race leader, although there are three riders left on course

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-017.jpg

(TV cameras broke for the final riders to take on course, sorry)

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates does an horrible timetrial, losing 2 minutes to Phinney. Big step-backwards in his fight for a top5 in GC

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko was obviously expected to not have a great timetrial, but still he has fought to do a good time, losing just over 1’30 on Phinney

And the last men in course, the race leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Peter Sagan! He knows he’s about to lose the lead, but he’s not letting it go without giving a great fight. After the second check point he’s already 48 seconds worse than Phinney (44 than Taaramae), which still allows him to stay on the lead, but there are still 9 km left in the stage.

And as expected, the Slovak can’t retain his lead, as he has lost 1’17 to Phinney.

Taylor Phinney wins in Arbois the first timetrial of the Tour de France! But Rein Taaramae is the new race leader!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/TDF/TDF-04-021.jpg

The big favourite to win the Tour de France is already on the lead after the fourth day of racing. Taylor Phinney and Robert Gesink are also very well-placed, but especially for Phinney, one of their goals was to be on the lead after this timetrial. Spilak is almost 1 minute behind the Estonian
