Third stage, and obviously another dead flat one. Two Cat.4 climbs for the breakaway riders to fight for the KoM jersey before the sprint trains appear in the last 10 kms and the sprinters fight for the win in Villa Ahumada
Three riders form the BotD. Neither of them have been in previous breakaways, although one of them might gain the U25 lead if he can get all the bonus seconds in the sprints
Paluta
Bookwalter
Marentes
Marentes proved the be the strongest of the trio by winning all KoM and intermediate sprints in the day but one, with the "bad luck" of his miss being in a KoM, so he only got 8 points in KoM, so Laton keeps the KoM lead, and 6 bonus seconds, who will put 31 seconds behind Salleh. Also Paluta takes four bonus seconds, and will be the second placed in U25 classification
With 15 km to go we notice that around 50 riders are distanced for the bunch. None of them have taken any bonus seconds in the previous two stages, so we can assume that no one important was there. The reason for this is the 35 km/h winds that we are having all the stage. And expect more riders to be dropped, so right now is key to be in the first places of the group.
The breakaway still has around 30 seconds of advantage, but they are getting caught soon
With 5 kms left, the breakaway is being caught now thanks to Sauber, but Marentes has other plans and is attacking again, trying to steal the win from the sprinters. He doesn't go too far alone though
2 km to go! SanCor is leading the sprint for Andriato, although in the middle of the road, WCC is working very well for Castañeda, who has Haller on his wheel, while Salleh is being launched by Awang. Rowe is again very far of the first places, but yesterday he could fight from the same situation. Surprisingly, Granjel Cabrera is again nowhere to be seen
Richeze Andriato Lay Awang Vasylyuk Castañeda Manan Haller Salleh Bennett Ford Clarke Brus Corti Krieger Rowe Farrar
Lay is still leading-out Castañeda under the Flamme Rouge, but he Spanish rider has gained the head of the group, even when Andriato started his sprint. Also, Vasylyuk when he tried to get out of the way, blocked Salleh, making the race leader to lose the wheel of his team-mate
Haller is gaining ground close to the fences, in a very risky move with two WCC riders in his right side. A little move by Lay in this moment, and it’s all over for the Austrian
Andriato, Bennett, Clarke and Salleh look to be fighting for the third place today, but it’s important to get as much bonus seconds as possible, especially for the Malaysian, who leads the race
300 metres left and Haller is creating a nice gap between him and Castañeda. Behind them, Andriato currently leads the fight for the third place, but seems to be already fading, and Clarke, Bennett and Salleh are coming much faster
Haller is fading! Less than 100 metres to go, but Castañeda is almost at his level and might take the win from the Austrian’s hands!
And he does! Jaime Alberto Castañeda takes the win in Villa Ahumada!
Clarke does a fantastic sprint from a not perfect positioning - who knows what he could have done if placed a little better when the sprint started - and closes the podium, ahead of Bennett and Andriato, who was able to hold off Salleh by milimetres. Krieger, Brus, Farrar and Lay complete the top10 and take the final bonus seconds of today
Salleh will continue being the race leader, although his lead has been reduced to only 5 seconds to Castañeda with 2 stages left
