Circulo de Juarez - Stage 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/Juarez/Juarez-01-000.jpg

First stage in Mexico. The main favourites should be Salleh, Haller, Granjel Cabrera and Castañeda, but there are plenty of sprinters willing to win the inagural stage today

With a Cat.4 KoM in the first 10 kms of the stage, it was a matter of who was the first to attack to know who would take the points here. And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Eryk Laton was that guy, taking the points ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Jung and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Eiking

These three riders would be the only ones in the breakaway today, despite other riders like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Novardianto or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/phc.png Scotson having tried it also, but the bunch didn’t allow a bigger group to escape

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/Juarez/Juarez-01-001.jpg

Why hide it? Absolutely nothing happened during the last 130 kms. The only things remarkable are that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Laton kept winning every sprint, either for bonus seconds either for KoMs, which means that he will lead the KoM classification at the end of the stage. Also, the Polish rider took 6 bonus seconds, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Eiking taking four and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Jung taking two

KoM standings

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Laton 10
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Jung 6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Eiking 2

Bonus seconds

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Laton 6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spc.png Eiking 4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/csd.png Jung 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/Juarez/Juarez-01-002.jpg

With 15 km to go,pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kul.png Laton decided that he didn’t want Eiking’s or Jung’s company anymore and attacked. His gap to the bunch was only one minute, where Sauber and Aeropostal were doing most of the job for the chase

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/Juarez/Juarez-01-003.jpg

All of them would be caught eventuall even before the 10-km arc. But with 5 kms left, there weren’t proper sprint trains yet, as the pace put by cycleYorkshire and Sauber was so high that teams were having troubles to progress to the first places

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/Juarez/Juarez-01-004.jpg

3 km to go and we are finally seeing the sprint trains in full force.
In the left side Aeropostal, with a rather weak lead-out for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera, in Sepulveda and Dall’Antonia. On the Cuban’s wheel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Andriato, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/0r8.png Clarke and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prx.png Brus.

In the center Sauber’s, which is undoubtly the best train here, with Manan and Awang leading-out pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Salleh. And no one is following Salleh’s wheel, something that could lead someone into a great place

And in the right side there’s cycleYorkshire’s train for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Rowe, with Murray and Corti acting as lead-out mens

In the big mess that follow this trains, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Farrar is one of the best placed, with a key rider like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ioc.png Haller completely lost and WCC riders nowhere to be seen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/Juarez/Juarez-01-005.jpg

Almost under the Flamme Rouge and the situation hasn’t changed too much in the last couple of kms, with only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Salleh losing a little pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Awang’s wheel due to being blocked a little by a cycleYorkshire riders that was trying to get out of the way

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/Juarez/Juarez-01-006.jpg

Just 700 metres left and everyone is now sprinting. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera is alone in the left side, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.png Farrar is going at an unbelievable speed at the moment, gaining a lot of places in a very short amount of time. In the right side, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Salleh was looking very strong, but he has had to slow down a little, as again he’s been blocked by a rider from cycleYorkshire, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Rowe and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Andriato are at Salleh’s left side, disallowing him from moving to that side

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/Juarez/Juarez-01-007.jpg

150 metres to the finish and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Granjel Cabrera is taking the lead from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/yor.png Rowe. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gnr.pngFarrar seems to be fading, but will take at least a fifth place today, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/san.png Andriato and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spr.png Salleh are lacking something - speed and space - to challenge for the win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/Juarez/Juarez-01-008.jpg

And Raul Granjel Cabrera takes the opener in Juarez! It was a very close sprint, with the Cuban rider narrowly beating Rowe. Andriato takes the third place over Salleh, who seems to be very angry with cycleYorkshire riders, arguing with them once they stopped riding, and Farrar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/Juarez/Juarez-01-009.jpg

And the rest of the top10 - and the bonus seconds places - are occupied by Krieger, Brus, Horton, Bennett and Clarke, while Haller finishes outside of top10, in a very disappointing day for the German star

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/Juarez/Juarez-01-010.jpg

Eiking and Jung couldn’t stay with the bunch in the hectic final kms, and will lose any chance of getting minor points through their already won bonus seconds in GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/C2/Juarez/Juarez-01-011.jpg

Obviously Granjel Cabrera is the leader of the race, 7 seconds ahead of Rowe, 10 of Andriato, 13 of Salleh, etc... And Laton, thanks to his breakaway, not only is the leader of KoM, he’s only the U25 leader
