Only chance for the climbers to gain time on the puncheurs in this race, and after yesterday’s unbelievable stage, Slagter leads GC with 1’30 on Jull-Jensen and 2’25 on Amador. Anyone else is too far away to have a chance to win the race.
Six riders get in the breakaway in this short stage. There’s no wind today, finally.
Lopez
Molard
Vanendert
Preidler
Lane
Baz
I can’t believe this. Meyer, who is 7th in GC, is attacking in the first climb of the day. HIs move won’t stick for sure, as he is not a good climber, but this could lead us into another epic stage if Iberia mantains the current pace until the end of this climb. Before him, Belmokhtar and Cerny had attacked
As expected, Meyer didn’t go anywhere, and from there it was Hugo Boss the team setting the pace in the bunch, just keeping the gap to the breakaway under 5 minutes. In the climb, Preidler was first.
Cat.2 KoM
Preidler 10 Vanendert 8 Molard 6 Lane 4 Baz 2
Crash in the breakaway! Lopez, Molard, Vanendert and Baz are down! All can re-join the race happily. But when they were about to contact with the rest of the breakaway... Baz and Lopez are down again! That’s real bad luck for that duo. Two crashes in a breakaway...
Lots of crashes in the descent of the first climb of the day... and this time it involves both former race leaders! Sicard and Fraile are down, and with them most of Orange team
40 km left and Festina is setting the pace with Coppel in the bunch. We are on the second climb of the day, and the last one before Mount Baldy, where the stage will finish. Slagter looks to be alone, without any of his team-mates in the first places of the group
Only 3 riders are left in the head of the race, after Preidler wins again a KoM. Together with him, Lane and Baz, who despite his two crashes earlier has been able to stay with the leaders
Cat.2 KoM
Preidler 10 Lane 8 Baz 6 Belmokhtar 4 Molard 2
There is an uphill section a few km before Mount Baldy starts, and there Duarte tries his luck. He lost yesterday almost 40 minutes, and has the margin to fight for the stage win. Also Lecuisinier is going after him, as he wants a top5 in GC. They already got a minute in the bunch, where Hugo Boss is showing that they can’t handle the race
Tenorio sees this and also attacks from the leader’s group. At the moment Slagter is relying on Carlsberg’s domestiques, but as Jull-Jensen shouldn’t last too much in the group, he’ll lose soon that help
Preidler and Lane are starting now Mount Baldy with a 3-minute gap to Lecuisinier and Duarte. It could be enough to fight for the win, as they have almost 5 minutes on the leader’s group
Preidler, Lane---2’47--- Lecuisinier, Duarte, Baz---30’’--- Tenorio---1’25--- Slagter, Sicard, Juul-Jensen, Amador, Dekker, Yates
7 km left and Tenorio has caught the Lecuisinier-Duarte duo. In the front, Preidler has left behind Lane and somehow has increased his gap to Lecuisinier and Duarte. In the bunch, Indosat is now taking care of the chase, while Slagter is very attentive to everything
Intxausti attacks after his team-mates can’t keep the rhythm any longer, and Yates goes inmediately on his wheel. If the Brit can make this move to stick, he might jump into the GC podium
Slagter is trying to bridge the gap to Yates’ group, which also has Dekker and Choi, and in the process he has dropped Amador. This is not looking good for the Costa Rican GC hopes, as he really needs to win lot of time today to be able tomorrow to make up the deficit in the timetrial
Lecuisinier is going really strong and with only 4,5 km left, he is only 1 minute behind Preidler. He attacked and dropped both Duarte and Tenorio, and he has free way to the stage win unless he can’t catch the Austrian.
Amador has finally being able to attack Slagter. This is the duel for the GC win gentlemans! Yates is having lots of problem to follow them, while Dekker and Choi are ahead of the duo. In the bunch, Jull-Jensen is struggling a lot, as expected, but his team is helping him a lot to limit his losses and might save a top5 spot in GC at the end of the day
3 km for Lecuisinier, who has caught Preidler and is set to drop him. Amador has got rid of Slagter and is making up ground on Tenorio, Intxausti and Duarte really quickly. For Slagter is all about surviving now
Lecuisinier, Preidler---47’’--- Lane---25’’--- Tenorio, Intxausti, Duarte--19’’--- Amador, Dekker, Choi---47’’--- Slagter---15’’--- Yates---2’--- Sicard---1’--- Jull-Jensen
Two km to go, and we have three clear groups in the front. First Lecuisinier and Preidler for the stage win. Surprisingly the French hasn’t been able to drop the Austrian. 50 seconds behind them, a group with most of the top climbers, with Amador, Dekker, Tenorio, Intxausti, Duarte and Lane, and 45 seconds further behind, Slagter with Choi and Yates
Amador is fading now, and Slagter can see it! The Dutch is going to retain his lead, and is also making up the gap to the Costa Rican rider. Ahead of Amador, Intxausti and Tenorio, the Spanish duo, are gaining ground on Lecuisinier and Preidler, but with only around 1 km left, they might run out of space to catch them
Last km for the leading duo! They have 45 seconds to the Spaniard duo under the Flamme Rouge. Lecuisinier has been very conservative since he caught Preidler, but the Austrian hasn’t showed any weakness yet
Just as i said that... Preidler is struggling a lot with 500 metres left. Lecuisinier has free way to win the stage and even climb inside the top5 of GC
Slagter has reached Amador’s group with 800 metres to go. Really strong day for the Dutch or a weak one for the Costa Rican? Probably both
Lecuisinier starts his sprint, and obviously, Preidler can’t follow him
Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier wins in Mount Baldy!
Second place for Preidler, who has done an incredible race so far. If my calculations are correct, he should share the KoM win with Koretzky
Intxausti beats his fellow country-men in the sprint for third place
Dekker takes a great fifth place, which should help him to move inside top10 in GC
And then it comes the amazing Slagter! Not only he won’t lose his leader’s jersey, but he has even increased his gap to Amador, who finish just behind the Dutch, but losing like 15 seconds
Choi, Duarte and Yates round up the top10 of the stage
Losing almost 8 minutes to the stage winner can be considered as lot of time, but for Jull-Jensen is a big success, as this guarantees him the fourth place in GC. Not even in his wildest dreams he could have imagine himself doing this race
Skujins and De Bie arrive ten minutes later than the stage winner, but both will be satisfied with their performance, as both are likely to be in the top15 of GC
Only the timetrial left in the race, and with Slagter having a 3-minute gap to Amador, the GC winner is already decided, as is also the final podium, with Amador and Yates being on it next to the Dutchie
