Tour of California - Stage 6
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-000.jpg

Only chance for the climbers to gain time on the puncheurs in this race, and after yesterday’s unbelievable stage, Slagter leads GC with 1’30 on Jull-Jensen and 2’25 on Amador. Anyone else is too far away to have a chance to win the race.

Six riders get in the breakaway in this short stage. There’s no wind today, finally.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Molard
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Vanendert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-001.jpg

I can’t believe this. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Meyer, who is 7th in GC, is attacking in the first climb of the day. HIs move won’t stick for sure, as he is not a good climber, but this could lead us into another epic stage if Iberia mantains the current pace until the end of this climb. Before him, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Belmokhtar and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Cerny had attacked

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-002.jpg

As expected, Meyer didn’t go anywhere, and from there it was Hugo Boss the team setting the pace in the bunch, just keeping the gap to the breakaway under 5 minutes. In the climb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler was first.

Cat.2 KoM

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-003.jpg

Crash in the breakaway! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Molard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Vanendert and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Baz are down! All can re-join the race happily. But when they were about to contact with the rest of the breakaway... Baz and Lopez are down again! That’s real bad luck for that duo. Two crashes in a breakaway...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-004.jpg

Lots of crashes in the descent of the first climb of the day... and this time it involves both former race leaders! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Fraile are down, and with them most of Orange team

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-005.jpg

40 km left and Festina is setting the pace with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coppel in the bunch. We are on the second climb of the day, and the last one before Mount Baldy, where the stage will finish. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Slagter looks to be alone, without any of his team-mates in the first places of the group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-006.jpg

Only 3 riders are left in the head of the race, after pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler wins again a KoM. Together with him, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Lane and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Baz, who despite his two crashes earlier has been able to stay with the leaders

Cat.2 KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler 10
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Lane 8
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Baz 6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Belmokhtar 4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Molard 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-007.jpg

There is an uphill section a few km before Mount Baldy starts, and there pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte tries his luck. He lost yesterday almost 40 minutes, and has the margin to fight for the stage win. Also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier is going after him, as he wants a top5 in GC. They already got a minute in the bunch, where Hugo Boss is showing that they can’t handle the race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio sees this and also attacks from the leader’s group. At the moment pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Slagter is relying on Carlsberg’s domestiques, but as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Jull-Jensen shouldn’t last too much in the group, he’ll lose soon that help

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Lane are starting now Mount Baldy with a 3-minute gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte. It could be enough to fight for the win, as they have almost 5 minutes on the leader’s group

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Lane---2’47---pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Baz---30’’---pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio---1’25---pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Slagter, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Juul-Jensen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-010.jpg

7 km left and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio has caught the Lecuisinier-Duarte duo. In the front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler has left behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Lane and somehow has increased his gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte. In the bunch, Indosat is now taking care of the chase, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Slagter is very attentive to everything

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti attacks after his team-mates can’t keep the rhythm any longer, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates goes inmediately on his wheel. If the Brit can make this move to stick, he might jump into the GC podium

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Slagter is trying to bridge the gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates’ group, which also has pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Choi, and in the process he has dropped pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador. This is not looking good for the Costa Rican GC hopes, as he really needs to win lot of time today to be able tomorrow to make up the deficit in the timetrial

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier is going really strong and with only 4,5 km left, he is only 1 minute behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler. He attacked and dropped both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio, and he has free way to the stage win unless he can’t catch the Austrian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador has finally being able to attack pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Slagter. This is the duel for the GC win gentlemans! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates is having lots of problem to follow them, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Choi are ahead of the duo. In the bunch, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Jull-Jensen is struggling a lot, as expected, but his team is helping him a lot to limit his losses and might save a top5 spot in GC at the end of the day

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-015.jpg

3 km for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier, who has caught pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler and is set to drop him. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador has got rid of Slagter and is making up ground on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte really quickly. For pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Slagter is all about surviving now

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler---47’’---pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Lane---25’’---pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte--19’’---pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Choi---47’’---pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Slagter---15’’---pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates---2’---pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard---1’---pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Jull-Jensen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-016.jpg

Two km to go, and we have three clear groups in the front. First pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler for the stage win. Surprisingly the French hasn’t been able to drop the Austrian. 50 seconds behind them, a group with most of the top climbers, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Lane, and 45 seconds further behind, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Slagter with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cpl.png Choi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador is fading now, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Slagter can see it! The Dutch is going to retain his lead, and is also making up the gap to the Costa Rican rider. Ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio, the Spanish duo, are gaining ground on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler, but with only around 1 km left, they might run out of space to catch them

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-018.jpg

Last km for the leading duo! They have 45 seconds to the Spaniard duo under the Flamme Rouge. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier has been very conservative since he caught pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler, but the Austrian hasn’t showed any weakness yet

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-019.jpg

Just as i said that... pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler is struggling a lot with 500 metres left. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier has free way to win the stage and even climb inside the top5 of GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Slagter has reached pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador’s group with 800 metres to go. Really strong day for the Dutch or a weak one for the Costa Rican? Probably both

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier starts his sprint, and obviously, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler can’t follow him

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-022.jpg

Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier wins in Mount Baldy!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-023.jpg

Second place for Preidler, who has done an incredible race so far. If my calculations are correct, he should share the KoM win with Koretzky

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-024.jpg

Intxausti beats his fellow country-men in the sprint for third place

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-025.jpg

Dekker takes a great fifth place, which should help him to move inside top10 in GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-026.jpg

And then it comes the amazing Slagter! Not only he won’t lose his leader’s jersey, but he has even increased his gap to Amador, who finish just behind the Dutch, but losing like 15 seconds

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-027.jpg

Choi, Duarte and Yates round up the top10 of the stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-028.jpg

Losing almost 8 minutes to the stage winner can be considered as lot of time, but for Jull-Jensen is a big success, as this guarantees him the fourth place in GC. Not even in his wildest dreams he could have imagine himself doing this race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-029.jpg

Skujins and De Bie arrive ten minutes later than the stage winner, but both will be satisfied with their performance, as both are likely to be in the top15 of GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-06-030.jpg

Only the timetrial left in the race, and with Slagter having a 3-minute gap to Amador, the GC winner is already decided, as is also the final podium, with Amador and Yates being on it next to the Dutchie
