Hilly stage today, and not an easy one. A bad day and your GC hopes are over. We have here a couple of top puncheurs like Skujins, De Bie or Koretzky, who will mix with the GC riders. Fraile will have very difficult to retain his lead in San Jose, but with this interesting route, anything can happen

A few km from the start, there is a non-categorised climb, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Piccoli, working for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Koretzky, started to set a high pace on the bunch, which made already a few riders to be dropped from the bunch. Hard day for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Serebriakov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Willwohl and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Ford if they can’t rejoin the group soon

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-001.jpg

First retirement of the race.pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Laurent Pichon has withdrawn with a stomach flu. Strava DS has told us that he wasn’t feeling good before the start, but he wanted to try if he could reach the finish, but he has been unable

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Siriwardena is the only rider in the breakaway right now, but this doesn’t mean he made it without a fight. We’ve done almost a third of the stage, and lots of riders have tried their luck, but always Festina and Aegon didn’t want a big group to breakaway, or too strong riders.

The Sri Lankan obviously wins the first KoM of the day, while the other points goes to domestiques in the bunch.

Still 100 km left, when pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Cerny attacks succesfully from the bunch. He reaches pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Siriwardena very quickily, and even quicker he drops him. The pace in the bunch is still high, with this neither flat neither uphill terrain that is harming a lot of riders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-004.jpg

We are approaching to the hardest climb of the day, but a few km before, there were a couple of Cat.4 climbs. This was used by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Lundberg, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Smirnovs and Dieteren to attack

Cat.4 KoM

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-005.jpg

We are about to start Mt.Hamilton, and for one of the stage favourites there is a worrying situation. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skujins is on the last places of the group. We don’t why he is that mis-placed, but is safe to say that he won’t be able to follow the attacks, with the rhythm being very high in the front

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Simon is destroying the group, and has left only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Cerny in the front with most of the climb still to be done. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skujins is obviously not in the 80-rider group that is left. Other good rider that is missing from that group is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Vanendert

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-007.jpg

No attacks in the climb, with has allowed pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skujins to return to the main group. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Cerny is still in the front, with a 1’30 gap to the bunch. He will be the KoM leader after the stage as he has won the HC KoM

Cat. HC KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Cerny 20
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Belmokhtar 14
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Simon 12
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio 10
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Fraile 8
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Piccoli 6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard 5
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador 4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier 3
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker 2
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Schir 1

Despite having no attacks in the uphill part of the climb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Koretzky is attacking in the first part of the descent

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Koreztky has joined pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Cerny by the end of the descent, and both have a 1’20 gap to the bunch, where Indosat is working for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Koretky isn’t the only one in the move, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zardini, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skujins have attacked in a little uphill section in the descent. Also, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Koch is trying to join them, wanting to help Skujins in his move

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Korezky doesn’t want to have any company, and in this Cat.2 climb, has attacked. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler is coming really quick, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skujins is suffering now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-011.jpg

20 km left, and the group is almost 2 minutes behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler, who has attacked pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Koreztky using his incredible downhill abilities. Almost 1 minute behind the Austrian, a 4-rider group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Zardini, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Koch, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skujins and Cerny, while in the bunch Indosat keeps working

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-012.jpg

Interesting to see Festina being the team that is now setting the pace in the bunch, despite having pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Koretzky in the front. This had led to catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skujins’ group. Anyway, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler still has 1’50 on this group with only 14 km left

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-013.jpg

UBS has decided to pull now and this has made pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler’s advantage to be drastically decreased in only 4 km. With 10 km to go, he has now 1 minute to the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates on the move! The rhythm had decreased a little, and this could make pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler’s move to stick, so the British had to attack. Obviously, others are following him, like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Fraile or UBS domestiques, so Yates couldn’t open any gap. Only 40 riders left in the group with 8 km to go, with riders like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coppel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skujins or Izagirre in a second group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-015.jpg

Only 3 km left, and the route is all uphill from now. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Preidler only has 20 seconds on the group, where everyone is trying to be in the front

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador is the first to actually attack in this uphill finish with 2 km to go. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard is right on his wheel, while Dekker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio are also very well-placed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador has decided that this is his all-in move for the win today. Still 1,6 km to the finish, and everyone is in one racing line

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier are the 8 first riders, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Fraile is very far from the first places to be able to defend his lead

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Fraile is defenitely losing his lead, as split are been created between some riders. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador is still first with 600 metres left, and he doesn’t seem to fade at the moment

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-019.jpg

250 metres left and no one can go around pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador... but wait for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier, who is gaining some places and is now at pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio’s side. If he keeps this progression he can fight for the win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-020.jpg

100 metres to go and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard looks to finally be trying to fight for the win, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier is coming faster and is almost at his level. No one else can fight for the win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard is coming really faster than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ubs.png Amador, but the line is almost there. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier is out of the fight, and won’t even take the final podium place. Taking the win has double prize, as whoever wins will be the new race leader

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-022.jpg

This is going to be a really close photo-finish...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-023.jpg

... and Romain Sicard takes the win in San Jose!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-024.jpg

Amador is second, but can be happy with his performance and also his team’s.

Dekker beats Lecuisinier for third place, while Tenorio, Wellens and Intxausti finish in the top7

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/California/Cali-03-025.jpg

At the end, no gaps were given in the first group, so Sicard is the new race leader, only 4 seconds ahead of Fraile and 8 of Amador. Tenorio leads the Points, Cerny the KoM and Lecuisinier the U25
