Corsica International - Stage 3
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-000.jpg

After two stages which had less than 80 km combined, we “finally” reach the end of this race with its “Queen Stage”. Several climbs in the road before the big climb of the day, Col L’Ospedale, where the best climbers here will fight for the win.

The day has dawned very windy and four riders, all of them with decent climbing abilities, have decided to attack very early and join the breakaway

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Malacarne
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Shapira
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Vervaeke

They can’t win KoM unless they score some points in the final climb, but they will fight to finish in a good position in that secondary classification

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-001.jpg

Not even 20 km in the race, and we have a crash involving one of the favourites today. It’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Sergio Henao in the ground! Another important rider to have crashed is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Berhane, together with half of Valio’s team, including 3rd placed in GC, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Paillot. The French is heavily injured, as he has been dropped by his team-mates in the flat

Sadly, both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Chiarello and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Bazhkou have to abandon due this crash

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-002.jpg

It has started to rain now, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Shapira the first KoM of the day

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Shapira 6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Malacarne 4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov 2

Meanwhile, two riders have attacked from the bunch now, including KoM leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Skjerping, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Mollema

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-003.jpg

And we have another crash... This is going to be a long day for those who have already fallen and also for the GC riders, who must be raring to start asap the final climb.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Pinot is down like in S1 and with him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Talansky and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Pantano Gómez from those top10 contenders.
It has been a terrible race for the Frenchman, as he also has to abandon the race with what looks a broken collarbone

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-004.jpg

We still have over 50 km of stage, but the gap that the breakaway has is over 8 minutes now. In the bunch only Carlsberg and SPAR are working, so we should assume that if teams like Orange or Minions join the chase, the gap will be reduced dramatically.

In the last two KoMs no one has kept scoring lots of points, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Malacarne and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov winning both one. So most of these riders will be in the top10 of KoM but none of them in the top3.

Cat.3 KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Malacarne 6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Skjerping 4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov 2

Cat.3 KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov 6
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Shapira 4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Skjerping 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-005.jpg

Not a big surprise to see the race leader, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Steensen, to be dropped in the final of those Cat.3 climbs, but it’s more about how much riders are left in the group when this has happened. Only 60 riders left in the bunch, thanks to Jong’s work. The breakaway still has 7 minutes in the top of this climb, with 40 km left.

Of the riders who are still in the first group - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Mollema and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gre.png Skjerping have been dropped - all but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Vervaeke are within 3 seconds around 4’20 behind the race leader - 4 minutes behind the first GC riders. They are looking good for the stage win, but they would need a lot more of time to do something in GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-006.jpg

15 km left now, and finally some teams have decided to chase the breakaway, right when they are about to start Col L’Ospedale. The gap is huge, 7’30. Stage is on breakaway riders hands, and at this rate, they’ll be in a great GC position

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Vervaeke can’t keep up with the strong pace of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Shapira, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov just made the split in the very last moment. The gap is still on 7’20 with 10 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-008.jpg

It’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Quintana’s time now! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard best domestique is starting to set the pace in the now 30-rider group. The Colombian has quickly reduced the gap to 5’30 in only one km. There are some big news outside of this group, like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Contador, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Kiserlovski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/new.png Warbasse or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/cdb.png Garby

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Malacarne is done and is getting dropped from the leading group. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Shapira have already opened a 20-second gap to the Italian. The gap now is 4’30 with 5 km left. At this rate, they will have problems to win the stage, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Quintana seems relentless in his job

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Stefan Denifl is the first GC favourite to attack! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Pantano Gómez and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Quintana try to close the gap while his leaders makes up the ground to the first places of the group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-011.jpg

A few riders are trying to follow pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Denifl’s attack, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Sicard struggling the most at the moment.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Henao Montoya, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/npn.png Duarte, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/bgc.png Marquez and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Intxausti are around 10 seconds behind Denifl, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Uran is another 20 further back. And behind Sicard, a group of 10 riders which includes pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/eus.png Van der Broeck, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Brajkovic, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ora.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/min.png Pantano Gómez, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Kolesnikov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Berhane, Signorini and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ino.png Brenes, plus a couple of riders from the BotD

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-012.jpg

1,5 km for the leading duo, who still has 2 minutes to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Denifl, so the stage win is between pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Shapira and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Malacarne is only 25 second behind, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Vervaeke 15 seconds further behind the Italian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Denifl is making up the gap to the head of the race very quickly, but the final 600 metres, which has rather flat, will not allow the Austrian to take the stage win. He still have 20 seconds on Duarte/Uran/Intxausti group, so he would be only a couple of seconds short of the GC win now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-014.jpg

Time to sprint for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Shapira and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov! The Russian has started first his sprint, as he was behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Shapira, trying to surprise him. Important that there’s head-wind in the finish straight

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-015.jpg

Inside the final km, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Denifl has already caught pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hrm.png Vervaeke, and will catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ged.png Malacarne for sure before the line. His gap to the rest of favourites is 35 seconds, something that would make him the winner of the race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Tatarinov is leading with 150 metres left, but he’s starting to struggle, so pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Shapira has a golden shot for the win now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-017.jpg

Idan Shapira wins in Col L’Ospedale!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-018.jpg

Tatarinov exploded in the final 100 metres while Shapira had enough energy to overtake him at the end.

Malacarne takes third place, but the question now is who will win GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-019.jpg

Vervaecke leads Denifl, as the Austrian has collapsed in the final 200 metres. His GC win might be in danger with that unexpected collapse

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-020.jpg

This has allowed Henao and Duarte to finish in the same time as Denifl, thus making Fabio Duarte the winner of 2017 Corsica International

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-021.jpg

Uran couldn’t follow Henao, Duarte and Marquez - who crossed the line in eighth, likely in the same time as the other two- and he will lose around 25 seconds to them

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-022.jpg

Intxausti closes the top10, with Sicard being the biggest disappointment of the day finishing just outside of it

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/HC/Corsica/CorInt-3-023.jpg

There are two big winners today. The first one is obviously Fabio Duarte, as the GC winner. The other one is Idan Shapira. Fablok’s rider not only has won the stage today, but also has won both KoM and Points jerseys in the process.

In the GC, Henao and Denifl completes the podium, while Indosat wins the Teams standings
