The fourth stage is new in this year's edition and it's probably the most challenging of all stages here: with almost 200km in total, the profile features a partly hilly, partly flat route. It's a challenging route for pure sprinters, even though Salleh should be confident enough to deliver again. With yesterday's weird behaviour in the peloton though, we wonder if we will see something similar again. And, of course, will this route cause some trouble for one-dimensional sprinters and TT guys? The crosswinds blow like they did in the past few days (around 40-50kmh today), so it's everything but an easy day in the saddle.
A group of six riders forms the break of the day, quickly establishing a 9 minutes gap with now 145km remaining:
Agostini (GC 48th, + 1.35)
Turchi (GC 51st, + 1.38)
Jérôme
Chérel
Pellaud (GC 79th, + 2.07)
Richardson
Pellaud took the first Cat2 mountain sprint ahead of Agostini, who would then take the first of two intermediate sprints. The second sprint goes to Turchi ahead of Chérel..
A big crash rather back in the peloton. No major GC contenders or sprinters involved, but horrible news for Joeaar, who has to abandon from the race soon after.
Rijntjes as the most notable GC rider (27th, + 1.03) going down. He wouldn't make it back to the peloton.
Chérel would also take the second mountain sprint, but none of today's breakaway riders could attack the classification leader:
KoM: Taborre 22, Marentes 20, Agostini 16, Chérel 16, Pellaud 14
The chase of the peloton is on and both the profile and the crosswinds seem to do it's damage now. As Proximus, In-n-Out, Sauber and cycleYorkshire show their colors at the front of the pack, we see a stretched field and some smaller groups dropping off. The breakaway group leads by 1'47" with now 33km to go.
Let's have a look at who's in trouble here:
Mottin (GC 6th) is in a group that got dropped! The climbs, the wind, the length of the stage clearly make him suffer and it's obvious that those dropped groups would not make it back to the pack, where now just 124 riders remain.
Stannard (GC 16th) and Goddaert (22) got dropped as well, finding themselves in a few smaller groups even further behind Mottin. Those guys will definitely lose some time today.
And the peloton gets smaller: 100 riders are left in the main group with now 13km to go. The chasing teams struggle to catch the break, that still leads by about two minutes.
Chérel gives it a go and attacks the leading group!
Empty-handed and with now just 7km remaining and the peloton still 1'47" in arrears, it's pretty clear that the winner will come from the early break:
Agostini as the next trying to escape! The Italian is actually the virtual race leader at this point. But for now, he will surely just think about the possible stage-win..
The attack from Agostini is looking promising, as he opened up quite a big gap quickly! And with the peloton still trying to limit the losses (at least), it's indeed not only about the stage but also the GC lead now!
Sauber supporting cycleYorkshire in a way, as they are pulling the reduced peloton towards the finish. The gap to Agostini is getting smaller, but it may become a close one for GC leader Robert today..
Huge day for Agostini anyway: he celebrates his solo-win and will now wait for the peloton, that is still behind his former breakaway companions. The clock is ticking..
..and stops at 52 seconds, when Pellaud outsprints Chérel to finish 2nd on the stage!
Jérôme comes in as 4th, while Richardson and Turchi couldn't hang on in the final kilometres. They will finish quite far behind eventually, as they were totally empty once they got dropped from the other four riders.
So it's 52 seconds for the chasing group and we see the peloton in the background..
..no more gap! The peloton is finishing with the same time as Pellaud, so Agostini gained those 52 seconds (plus bonifications of course):
Salleh keeps winning the bunch sprints for 5th on the day, beating Granjel Cabrera and Haller. It's been a tough day, but of course those sprinters won't be happy to not sprint for line honours.
A few more names got dropped in the final kilometres: Hofer (GC 18th) and Cruz (23) as the most notable names maybe.
Robert finished as fifth-last in the peloton and survived the day as the man in yellow. It's been much closer than he might have expected though: Agostini moves up to 4th in the GC (just 15 seconds Robert)! Repsol had no real GC contender with Kneisky as 28th in the GC, so this is another big race for the team, if Agostini holds on to this result in the final stage.
Salleh remains the undisputed points leader and with now 62pts, he's already 27pts ahead of Haller, who moves up to 2nd. The final stage though features a very later intermediate sprint, so we can't yet announce Salleh as the certain winner. Mullen keeps the U25 lead, Taborre (as mentioned) the KoM lead.
