Welcome to Kazakhstan for this race. Another hilly race for PCT, as today we already had Strade Bianche. Last year it ended in a mass sprint despite the hilly circuit. Will this happen again this year?
Right from the start, three riders have attacked
Arifin
Di Gregorio
Laengen
Halfway through the race, the gap is 5 minutes. Newton and Generali work in the bunch for their leaders
We are on the final lap of the race! Still around 40 km to the end of the race, but the rhythm is high
Just before the 10 km arc, Tejay van Garderen launches his attack. On his wheel is Robin van der Hubenhagen. Also, with this move, the breakaway is over
Van Garderen and vd Hubenhagen (and Di Gregorio, but he is already fading) have a 20 seconds to a 9-men group where Kinoshita is attacking from. In that group we have riders like Betancourt, Klemme, Kwiatkowski, Ulissi, Ignatiev, Palini and Rabottini
The two first group have now merged - except for Betancourt, who has gone back to the bunch- and they have 30 seconds on a group where Indosat is puling hard, as Anuar Aziz is there
Van Garderen doesn’t want to finish in a sprint, whether it’s a reduced or a mass sprint, and with 3 km to go, attacks again
2 km to go, and Van Garderen has opened a nice gap. 15 second to the group where vd Hubenhagen is doing all the work
In the bunch, some teams tries to bring back at least the favourites group, while Kump looks anxious to make his move in the sprint. He is clearly the best sprinter, and with his uphill abilities, a great place is guaranteed for him
Van Garderen’s wins is almost secured with 700 metres to the end. He has 20 second on the favourites group, where the riders are already starting their sprint, and 20 further to the big bunch
Palini and Ignatiev are sprinting by his own, but it’s working now for Ferrero, with both leading the group with 500 metres to finish. Also, Ulissi, who should the fastest of all of them, looks to be blocked by vd Hubenhagen.
Tejay van Garderen wins Tour of Almaty!
Photo-finish between the Ferrero riders to see who finished second and who third... and is Palini ahead of Ignatiev! Incredible result for the home team!
And another photo-finish between two team-mates, this time Netia. Rabottini beats Kwiatkowski for fourth place. Also, Kinoshita will have to take the sixth place
Klemme finish seventh ahead of Ulissi, while Van der Hubenhagen closes the leading group, and also is the best CT rider today
And Wurtz completes the top10 of this race ahead of one of the six! Isostar riders who have finished between 11th and 26th places
Really deserved win for Van Garderen after two great attacks, one with 10 km to create the “favourites group”, and then other with 3 km to go to leave that group behind. And i believe this was a win goal for Newton. If so, a dream day for the team.
