Welcome to the 2017 edition of Strade Bianche. One of the most important hilly classic for PCT teams, the race starts in Gaiole in Chianti and finishes in Siena after 186 km of hills and dirt roads.
The day has dawned rainy and windy. This will affect a lot the race, and might give us a different outcome than expected.
Only three riders in the early breakaway
Pozzato
Jaramillo
Eliad
Still in the first 20 km of the race and we already have the first crash. Zaini is the biggest name affected, and almost the whole Meiji team is waiting for him
140 km to go and the breakaway has 5 minutes
With 50 km to go, the gap is 3 minutes, and MOL is taking the initiative in the group
Nothing has happened yet, and we are inside the last 25 km. The break has a 1’20 gap over the main group, where MOL, Grieg and Valio take pulls together
Pozzato tries his luck in the breakaway with 15 km to go. Looking at the bunch’s pasivity, this might be a winning move. “Strade Borenche”
What are my eyes seeing? An attack of a favourite? It’s Di Maggio! And this is the moment where Pozzato's move ends
But he doesn’t go anywhere. It was obvious, everyone is fresh as this riders are doing a “coffee ride”. 7 km to go, and yet over 150 riders in the first group
A couple of tries from Hagen and Froome, before this one from Flügel. But they are attacking on downhill instead on the hills. Are these riders idiots?
Flügel starts in first place the climb to Siena, followed by Froome and a couple of Orange riders
We are almost in top of that hill, before the final 600 metres being flat/downhill, and Flügel is still first
Flügel Froome Hagen Schreurs Canola Gautier Caruso
800 metres and in the top of the hill, Froome is done. Flügel still leads, but Hagen is coming really quick
300 metres and the win is between these two riders; Flügel and Hagen
Aleksandr Flügel wins Strade Bianche!
Surprisignly, Hagen couldn’t out-sprint the German rider, and will happy to be happy with second place today.
Chris Froome takes third place from Canola and Gautier
Scheurs and Di Maggio have to accept their places; sixth and seventh today, both ahead of Jull-Jensen
Caruso and Rovny completes the top10 of this boring race
