Paris - Nice - Stage 8
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-000.jpg

Finally we are in the last stage of this great race, but it doesn’t mean that the riders will have an easy ride, not at all. Remember that Lutsenko is the race leader, 7 seconds ahead of Bakelants, and we also have a tight fight for the other spot of the podium, with Trofimov having a 6-second lead on Ponzi. We have several climbs on the road today, and although both Bakelants and Ponzi could decide to bet all in the sprint, i find hard to not see attacks from all the riders behind Lutsenko to take the lead from his hands

Even before the first attacks happened, there was a big crash in the mid-late part of the pack. Around 25 riders are down. TV motorbike goes through the fallens and there are some big news as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prp.png Avelino, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Nepomnyachsniy... wait! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi is on the floor, same as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge!

Luckily for them, they are not forced to retire, something that only happened to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Bilkra

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-001.jpg

In the moment of the crash, seven rider broke away from the bunch. No Kulhavy, Declercq and Calmejane despite the big amount of KoM points in the stage, but Moser has sent Hosek, who is only 21 points behind his team-mate.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prp.png Egidio
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Wöhrer
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Hoelgaard
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Konrad

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.pngRobov is the best placed in GC, but already seven minutes behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko, so no danger if the breakaway is succesfull

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Calmejane know that he is losing his chance to win KoM and together with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Konovalovas has attacked to join the breakaway before the first climb of the day. He was beated by several riders there, including pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Hosek, but he is now only 3 points short for getting the lead. Also, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Hoelgaard, after winning this KoM, is now in the fight for KoM

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Hoelgaard 44

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-003.jpg

TV cameras must have missed, but it seems that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Coppel has crashed in the descent of the climb, and all Festina teams has waited for him, including pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Koretzky. Critical moment for the Frenchman. We also get the bad news that both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vakoc have been forced to abandon after being involved in the same crash

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Calmejane, Hosek and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Hoelgaard have kept their fight for KoM points, and after 3 cat 2 climbs, the Norwegian has really closed in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Calmejane for the KoM lead, after winning 2 KoMs, with the French rider being only able to score minor points, as well as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Hosek. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Hoelgaard is now only 2 points behind the Frenchman

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Calmejane 74

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-005.jpg

We are in Col Sant-Roch, the hardest climb of the day. The breakaway has 4 minutes with 60 km left to a bunch led by Aker and Evonik. Weird thing by Aker, as with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Hoelgaard in the breakaway having been seen as clearly the strongest, they have a very solid chance of winning today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Hoelgaard is second in this climb, only behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov, which gives him the provisional lead in KoM standings. With pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Calmejane about to be caught, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Hoelgaard has the KoM secured. Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Oss has been doing an incredible job in the bunch, reducing the group to 50 riders.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Hoelgaard 84
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Calmejane 78
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Hosek 70
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy 63
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Declercq 54
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov 48

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-007.jpg

Despite the earlier crashes and that only 50 riders remains in the peloton, only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Nepomnyachsniy has been dropped clearly injured. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Coppel has gone through this climb in the limit, as he seems to be slightly injured. He would be eventualy dropped in the descent, as Eritel is setting a high pace to not let anyone to recover anything

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-008.jpg

The bunch starts Col de Peille, the final climb of the day, only 2 minutes behind Hoelgaard/Robov duo. Important to remember that after reaching the top of Peille, there are still 25 km left of descent and the final flat kms

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov attacks pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Hoelgaard not only for the KoM points, but for the stage win, as seeing the bunch pasivity in the climb, they have even increased their gap while climbing, and the stage win is on their hands

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-010.jpg

No attacks in the climb, so the GC will be decided in the sprint, as the pace has rised in the descent, to the point they are about to catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Hoelgaard, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Robov only has 1 minute with 20 km left

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-011.jpg

There was an intermediate sprint in the descent, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu, who is amazingly still in the group, and should be the favourite for the win now, took a few useless points, but the key part was that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko took 2 bonus seconds, so the gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants is now 9 seconds. This means that Lutsenko will win GC if he finishes just behind Bakelants, whether the Belgian finishes. Also, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift being dropped a while ago, if Lutsenko can finish in the podium of the stage, he'll win the Points Jersey

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-012.jpg

5 km left, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Teklehaimanot is leading the group without an apparent reason. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi are very well-placed, in fourth, fifth and sixth places in the group, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu is again nowhere to been seen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-013.jpg

3 km left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Teklehaimanot is not longer leading the group, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko is in big troubles now, as he has like 15 riders in front of him, and now depends on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants. If the Belgian can finish second, he’ll win the race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-014.jpg

Really messy sprint, as we have lots of riders in parallel, everyone sprinting on his own, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu sitting around 15th place, maybe waiting for a space to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni is leading with 700 km to go. He has pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skujins on his wheel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Dyrnes at his left side, but riders as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Demare or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko are coming really fast from behind. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants seems like he can’t get that second place, but he hasn’t given up yet

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-016.jpg

200 metres left and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni still first, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skujins is coming out of his slipstream. No one else has a chance to win this, although pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi might get that third place he needs to jump in the final podium

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-017.jpg

Francesco Ginanni wins in Nice! Second stage win for the Italian in the race, but after yesterday’s disaster, his race is not that good

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-018.jpg

Skujins takes second ahead of Bobridge, who denies Ponzi the chance to be in the final podium. Dyrne and Bakelants are fifth and sixth...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-019.jpg

... so Alexey Lutsenko is the winner of 2017 Paris-Nice!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-020.jpg

After Lutsenko, Bakelants and Trofimov completes the podium, with Ponzi and De Bie in the top5. From here, some changes due to Coppel’s crash, which made him lose 8 minutes today, going outside top30 in GC. Bobridge, Skujins, Jensen, Izagirre and Kudus finish in the top10, with Ginanni and Boswell missing on it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-021.jpg

Swift takes the Points Jersey by only 8 points to Lutsenko. His bad placement in the sprint today might have costed him this jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-022.jpg

Hoelgaard wins KoM after today’s exhibition ahead of Calmejane and Hosek. Moser were on a perfect situation at the start of the day, with Kulhavy on the lead and Hosek in the breakaway, but Hoelgaard was too strong today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-8-023.jpg

Lutsenko takes U25 jersey, obviously, ahead of Kudus and Kolar.

And Eritel surprises the PT teams to win the Teams standings, after Strava lost a lot of time today (and Gazelle yesterday)
