Jack Bobridge leads the race ahead of the most important road stage of this Paris-Nice edition. With the only “mountain finish” of the race in Mende, GC should shake up completely. And after yesterday’s “rest-day” for the favourites, we should have today a great showdown
Lots of rider who have decided to join the breakaway today, and ofc those who are fighting for KoM, like Declercq and Kulhavy, and also yesterday’s winner Naud
Thurau
Naud
Konovalovas
Lopez
Declercq
Kulhavy
Hoelgaard
Konovalovas is the best placed in GC, 3’18 behind Bobridge, so the breakaway isn’t likely to be allowed to have a big gap
Calmejane and Bouglas are very late in the party, as they have only attacked after 70 km of racing, right before the first cat 1 climb of the day. The breakaway has now a 3-minute gap to a bunch led by Jayco and Strava
Konovalovas leads the group in that climb, with Kulhavy making a huge step-forward in KoM battle. After the first 3 climbs of the day, the provisional KoM standings are like this:
Declercq 54
Calmejane 50
Kulhavy 47
With 70 km left, the gap stands at 2’30. No chance for a breakaway win, with more teams like Eritel or Gazelle getting involved in the pursuit
Both Calmejane and Bouglas were caught in the big flat part before the next climb, but now it’s the moment for a “new element” in the race; the wind. It shouldn’t be enough to provoke splits now, but if a team put a high pace in the flat, some of the puncheur might struggle later in the climbs
And when we get to another cat 1 climb, it’s Eritel the team that is setting the pace. And is not a slow pace at all. The bunch has already been reduced to 70-ish riders. We’ll see how many remain in the top of this climb, as also in the breakaway Kulhavy is batteling for KoM points with only a 1’30 advantage of the bunch
15 km left and the breakaway is about to be caught, with only Kulhavy, who will be the new KoM leader after this stage, and Konovalovas in the front. Behind them, Tinkoff is pulling from the group of 60 riders, where only Beltran is missing from the big names
Kudus is the first to attack today, almost when reaching the top of the last climb before Mende. He is followed by Trofimov and Bobridge, who doesn’t want anyone to escape from him. Bakelants keeps the calm and relies on his various team-mates to bring back those riders
Lutsenko, Trofimov and Kudus win 6, 4 and 2 seconds in a intermediate sprint placed at the 5 km mark. Might be key with the really tight gaps in GC so far
Whether they were fighting for those seconds or just attacking, these three riders plus Bakelants, Bobridge, Aasvold and Paulus have managed to open a little gap to the rest of the group, where Ponzi pulls desperate
Bobridge is in troubles now! The race leader was trying to follow Lutsenko’s move, which Bakelants and Trofimov could easily, but he has nothing left in the tank and is fading quickily into Ponzi's clutches, who has escaped from the big group
Lutsenko looks really strong and with his intense pace has already dropped Trofimov and Ponzi, who briefily was in the leading group, as is making Bakelants to suffer a lot to stay with him. Between those 4 riders and the big group, De Bie is the only one who has tried it. He is 40 seconds behind Lutsenko and 20 ahead of Bobridge’s group
Terrible images for Bobridge and Jayco team, as the Aussie is completely over of the fight. He’s been passed by lots of riders, and might end up losing an insane amount of time in so little distance
One km left and Lutsenko hasn’t got ridden of Bakelants yet. If the Kazakh wants to also take the race lead, he needs to drop the Belgian rider. Trofimov and Ponzi are 20 seconds behind, and will fight for third place, while De Bie keeps fighting to not allow Skujins and Berhane to catch him
Finally with 500 metres left, Lutsenko seems to have opened a gap to Bakelants in the moment that both start their sprints. But it might be not enough to see gaps in the line
Another big disappointment for Ginanni, as he is been dropped from Bobridge’s big group. So both 1st and 2nd in GC before the stage are out of the battle today
Alexey Lutsenko wins in Mende!
Second place for Bakelants, but it’s unclear whether there will be gap between both riders, and if so, if it will be enough to give Lutsenko the lead or not. The Kazakh would only need a 5-second gap to take the lead
Ponzi takes the final bonus seconds from Trofimov. Both have lost around half a minute to Lutsenko
De Bie takes fifth, with a 25 seconds gap to Skujins and Berhane. Solid result for all of them, especially for the wildcard rider
We have confirmation from the jury that a 12-second gap was awarded to Lutsenko, so the Kazakh becomes the new race leader, with a 7-second advantage to Bakelants.
Trofimov has 6 seconds on Ponzi for the final podium spot. The race will be decided tomorrow in Nice, and the bonus second in the finish will be key to decide who will win 2017 Paris-Nice.
Also, Lutsenko has closed a lot to Ponzi in the Points jersey. Only 17 points shy of the lead here. He would need to be either 1st or 2nd with Swift scoring 0 points to deny the Brit the win
