Final flat stage of the race before having another two hilly stages to decide GC. Swift has already won 3 stages and is looking for a fourth which would secure him the Points jersey also (if he hasn’t already). Anyway the stage is not completely flat, so some sprinters will suffer or a breakaway might have the chance to win today. Very open race today.
Despite this, only 5 riders tried and succeed to join the breakaway.
Naud
Predatsch
Mas
Neilands
Roosen
The bunch is taking it very easy until mid-stage, as with 80 km to go, the breakaway has a 10 minute gap, so there’s a real chance that they can hold on to fight for the win today. Before this, we had two cat.3 climbs that were barely disputed by the breakaway, as only Naud has KoM points before the stage
Cat.3 KoM
Naud 6 Neilands 4 Roosen 2
Cat.3 KoM
With 45 km to go, and after another cat.3 climb, the gap has been reduced to 7 minutes. Predatsch is having lots of troubles to stay with the group in the climbs, but he has been able to rejoin them in the descent. Whether he can do the same after the final climb is unclear
Cat.3 KoM
Roosen 6 Neilands 4 Mas 2
25 km to go and the breakaway is passing through the finish by the first time. They still have a gap of 5 minutes, so they should fight for the win. In the bunch only Jayco is working. Really odd that no one of the teams with sprinters wants to chase today
As we said before, Predatsch was having problems to follow his breakaway-mates and in the final climb it wouldn’t be different. Very early in the climb he loses contact with the front, and will have to settle for fifth, if the bunch doesn’t accelerate
Mas is trying to get ride of someone in the final 3 km of ascent, but he is unable to do it yet
But it has turned out to be a mistake for Porto’s rider as he is the one getting dropped when Naud and Roosen accelerate. Neilands is struggling to follow them, but he is still within touch
Neilands can’t keep up with the rhythm in the first part of the descent, as Naud is descending like a mad man. With 8 km to go the leading duo has 15 seconds the pursuing duo. Meanwhile, in the bunch all is still calm and the gap is around 5 minutes
5 km to go and Naud is creating a gap to Roosen. Naud’s descending abilities are much better than Roosen’s, and the Dutch is having to use a lot of extra energy to follow him. Neilands and Mas couldn’t keep with their chase, and they are now over 1 minute behind them
2 km and the sprint is about to get started. At the end Naud wasn’t able to drop Roosen, and the Dutch is slightly better sprinting, although the extra effort he had to do to follow Naud in the descent should go into RBC’s rider favour
Very clever move by Naud now. Instead of waiting as much as possible to save energy, he is starting his sprint is the uphill zone to use his theoretical advantage is hills over Roosen. Let’s see if it pays out
For a moment it seemed like Roosen was going to overtake Naud, but now the Dutch has blown out, and is free way for Naud to win this
Patrick Naud wins in Rive-de-Gier! This one is really deserved after his been his third breakaway of the week
Second place for Roosen. The downhill finish killed him but he still gives him his team a nice share of points.
Third place is for Mas ahead of Nielands
The bunch sprint is won easily by Ahlstrand ahead of Degenkolb, Avelino and Grosu.
The only thing you can say about this stage is the terrible decision that teams like Spotify, Iberia or Aegon made of not chasing the breakaway
