Paris - Nice - Stage 5
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-000.jpg

We will have passed the mid-way of Paris-Nice after today’s stage, and GC is still very open. But today’s stage won’t keep things quiet. After yesterday’s show from Ginanni, he will be marked today. Riders as Skujins, Ponzi or even Bakelants need to attack today to gain time on Bobridge, who took the lead from Coppel, and is in a very good place to win GC.

Despite the profile of the stage, with several climbs, only 4 riders decided to breakaway today

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Declercq
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Maes
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Hosek

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-001.jpg

Just before the first climbs of the day, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Naud joined the breakaway. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Hosek took the most points in the hree first climbs. That group had a big gap in this moment, with 8 minutes in top of Station de Rousses

Meanwhile, in the bunch some Jayco’s domestiques went wild and split the group in the first 10 places, with riders like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi there, but Strava and Eritel were able to close the gap. Right after that, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy decided to attack. He would join the leading group in the descent

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-002.jpg

We don’t know why, but Eritel is setting an incredibly high rhythm in Cret Pourri that is likely to break the dreams of lots of riders if when pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Debesay is done, they continue to do it with another rider. Also, they have reduced the breakaway gap to 4 minutes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Declercq passes again first in Cret Pourri, and that is making him a great contender for KoM, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Hosek is helping pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy, in a controversial decision by Moser’s DS.

Cat.1 KoM

And Eritel is still going on! 80 riders in the group at the top of this climb. We remind that Eritel doesn’t have a hilly leader for this race, and that their leaders is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Kudus, who is really far from being a good puncheur in PT level, but we still love that they have taken the initiative, although Jayco must be hating them now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-004.jpg

Now we have a couple of cat.2 climbs in a row. In the first, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Debesay and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Teklit kept putting the rhythm, while in front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Declercq kept scoring points for KoM

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy 4
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Debesay 2

But in the second climb pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis attacked with 50 km to go. He lost yesterday lot of time, and at least wants to show Ayubowan colours

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Bonnin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Gautier have also joined the move, and the Valio rider is a dangerous one for GC, sitting less than 3 minutes from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge. The trio have caught the original breakaway, and only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy has been able to stay with them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Gautier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Bonnin have dropped pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis, who is now 1 minute behind them. The group, led by Pendleton’s riders, is almost 2 minutes further back. Really disappointing climb from the GC guys. I’d hoped more from the guys who had some time lost in GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-007.jpg

Incredible work now by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Jaco Venter, who has reduced on his own almost 3 minutes to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Gautier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Bonnin in the descent to the final climb of the day. Now we have a 75-men group in the front, and hopefully some GC guys will attack now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-008.jpg

Speaking of the devil... attack by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Jan Bakelants! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter was still pulling hard from the bunch, but the Strava rider saw the oportunity to attack and has create a nice gap already

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko have joined pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants as attackers, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge is relying on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Lowe to bridge the gap. Bad decision i think if he doesn’t go himself quickly

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko are now together and have around 25 seconds on the leader’s group, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Lowe is still pulling hard to reeled in these three riders. Also riders like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Boswell are well placed looking keen to attack in the next uphill terrain, as we still have 10 km to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Lowe is today’s MVP without a doubt. He has saved pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge lead with his impressive job. 7 km to go and we are in the final uphill terrain of the stage, as the last 5 km are in descent. Incredibly we see in the first 15 places pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift helped by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png De Bie. This is looking good for a third stage win for the British rider

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-012.jpg

Magician move by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Beltran? He has attacked using the “impass” of the group, and as Jayco doesn’t consider him a threat (he is more than 2 minutes behind in GC) they are not the ones pulling. It looks like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png De Bie is counter-attacking, either for his own chances or riding for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift’s stage win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-013.jpg

Suddenly all riders wants to attack, and that ends pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Beltran’s move under the 5 km arc. Now is all descent to the finish, and the stage winner must be well-placed already now if anyone wants to test the downhill abilities of the GC riders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-014.jpg

3 km to go, and we have both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Demare in the first places of the group. No one seems to want to lead-out the sprint, so how will those sprinters control the group now?

We can also spot in the group another sprinters like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Reimer, but they are not yet in the first places of the group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-015.jpg

Less than 2 km to finish the stage, and Eritel seems to be in auto-mode. They pull whenever the pace is low, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter is leading-out the sprint for...

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Dyrnes
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridgepcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Lowepcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Van der Lijkepcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Trofimov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Demare
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-016.jpg

Under the “Flamme Rouge” all riders start their sprint, including pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ers.png Venter after leading-out his missing team-mates. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift has accelerated really quick and has already passed pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Dyrnes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift is now on the lead with 350 metres to go, but watch out for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko. He has caught perfectly Swift’s wheel, and seems to be even quicker than him. Behind them, a nutrid group of riders who will have to fight for third place, like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Demare

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-018.jpg

200 metres to go and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift is keeping pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko behind him, but the Kazakh is still coming faster. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Van der Lijke seems to have a bit of advantage in the fight for third

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-019.jpg

Really clear image from the helicopter, that shows pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift with enough advantage to win the stage, but also a good image in the fight behind, with several riders in paralell

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-020.jpg

Ben Swift wins in Bellegarde-sur-Valserine! Is his third stage win in the race out of five stages

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-021.jpg

Second place for Lutsenko. He has narrowly missed on the win, but he can be happy with those 12 bonus seconds. And third is Nick van der Lijke

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-022.jpg

Fourth is Bakelants, barely ahead of Trofimov, Bobridge, Ponzi, De Bie, Dyrnes and Demare

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-5-023.jpg

Jack Bobridge keeps his lead, with the same gap to Ginanni and Bakelants; 24 and 26 seconds
