Paris - Nice - Stage 4
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-000.jpg

Big stage today, and after yesterday’s TT, lots of puncheurs are really far in GC and needs to attack to gain time to the TT especialists. And today’s stage is perfect for that.

Six riders attack from the first km and form the BotD.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Baugnies
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Vanmarcke
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vad.png Khalifa
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Gaudin
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Sweeck

Meanwhile in the bunch, other riders have tried to attack, but Festina is not willing to let more riders to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-001.jpg

We started the day with sun and good weather, but by the time we have reached the only intermediate sprint of the day, is raining heavily. This will clearly affect some rider’s performance, and downhills will be even more important.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-002.jpg

Strava, Pendleton’s and Evonik really need a hard race today, and at least they are doing that from long range. This has made the breakaway to lose most of their advantages, and with 85 km to go they only have 3 minutes left

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Sweeck is on his second breakaway of the race, and looks that he wants to give his team some points through KoM standings. He is the first in the first climb of the day

Cat.4 KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Sweeck 5
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy 3
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Baugnies 1

But on the second climb of the day, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy knows what he has to do, and beats pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Sweeck this time

Cat.3 KoM
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy 6

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Baugnies 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-004.jpg

30 km to go, and still a few km to start Col de Nugere, the most important climb of the day. The breakaway has lost 2 of their original members (Gaudin and Khalifa), so only 4 are left in the front. But they might not even reach the base of the climb if Strava keeps setting that intense rhythm that they have done in the last 40 km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-005.jpg

We are now in Col de Nugere, and Pendleton is on the front now. A bit worrying pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coppel’s situation, as he has nobody of his team around him and most of the top puncheurs, like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants have several team-mates around them in the first places of the group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-006.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni is the first to try it! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge goes quickly on his wheel. The Aussie knows he has to control the race and can’t let such a top puncheur to go so early

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants has been helped by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Pichon, but the Frenchman couldn’t bridge the gap to that duo, and now the Belgian has decided to attack. Also we can see that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge is having difficulties to follow pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-008.jpg

Hugo Boss is obviously been forced to do the chase now. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi couldn’t follow (or didn’t want to) Bakelants’ move. Meanwhile the Belgian has joined the other two attackers and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Kulhavy, who remains from the BotD. They already have a gap around the minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-009.jpg

But the work from the Spanish team is disrupted when several riders start to attack in that group, like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Skujins, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Boswell... This is making the gap to grow to almost 1’20 with 15 km to go and one climb left. But then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Koretzky has appeared to work for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coppel, keeping the gap again around the minute with 10 km to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-010.jpg

The leading trio is now starting the final climb of the day, Col du Chevelard (1,4 km at 12%). Until now there has be a perfect collaboration between pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Bobridge, but now all have to play his cards. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants is much quicker than the others in a sprint, so whoever wants the win has to drop him.

One minute behind is the 40-men group where the rest of the favourites sits now, and even with some surprise like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift with lot of team-mates. They should work for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png De Bie, but you can never know which tactics will do Aegon. To be clear, the best rider to have been dropped already is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Bellis

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni has made his move from the beggining of the climb, and is up to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants to bridge the gap now. In the group, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Trofimov is very well-placed, so we should expect an attack from him soon

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Bobridge has blown up! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants is now taking the responsability to catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni, and they are likely to form a duo which will fight for the stage win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-013.jpg

As we predicted, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Trofimov is attacking now, but several riders had to same idea, and is like he is doing the work for them. We can see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png De Bie (+ several Aegon riders), pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Ponzi and Vakoc inside the first 10 places. In the back of that group, riders like Demare, Swift or Nepomyanschkiy are in big danger to be dropped

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants hasn’t been able to catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni, and now the Italian has a very nice gap with only 3 km to go, all in downhill roads; 11 seconds

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Bobridge is in real danger to be caught by the group led now by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Trofimov. He has 35 seconds on them, but he is completely done and in the group there are riders with something in the tank yet

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-016.jpg

Last km for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Ginanni, who is going to win the stage, and is also might have a chance to become the new race leader. He has 25 seconds now to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Bakelants and over 1’30 on the big group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-017.jpg

Important news as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coppel is not longer in the group of De Bie/Trofimov/Skujins, etc. Same happens with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Beltran

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-018.jpg

Francesco Ginanni wins in Clermont-Ferrand!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-019.jpg

Bakelants finishes second, but 50 seconds after the Italian. He will still win time on the rest, but we can see from here that he is not happy about the outcome of the stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-020.jpg

Bobridge couldn’t stay in front of the group, and Ponzi, being the fastest of that group, takes third place ahead of two Pendleton’s riders; Roelandts and Lutsenko. Incredible to see the Belgian so high in this stage. Pendleton’s can be happy with this result. This group have finished around 1’15 from Ginanni, and 25 seconds from Bakelants

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-021.jpg

It seems like today’s top10 is plagued of team-duos, as Gazelle’s riders take 6th and 7th, with Kangert ahead of Senyenov, and Tinkoff 8th and 9th, with Zakarin and Trofimov. Skujins narrowly takes tenth from De Bie

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-022.jpg

Izagirre, after yesterday’s incredible TT, has been dropped in the final kms, and will lose an extra minute, same as Gautier

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-023.jpg

A few seconds later arrives Coppel. He surely had hoped of staying with the favourites today, but he blow out in the final km. He still can fight for a top10 in GC i guess

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/ParisNice/PN-4-024.jpg

Jack Bobridge is the new race leader! The extra minute lose for Coppel, and the terrible TT from Ginanni, together with him finishing in Ponzi’s group, has been to enough to take the lead.
Ginanni is 24 seconds behind, with Bakelants another 2 seconds further
