Tirreno - Adriatico - Stage 7

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-000.jpg

Finally we have reached the final stage of Tirreno-Adriatico 2017, and Aleksandr Pluchkin will be crowned as race winner. Today we have a flat stage, where the sprinters will look to take a win. The big favourite is Guarnieri, who won the second stage. But the chance of a breakaway win is high, with the domestiques being tired the last hard days.

Seven riders form the breakaway, knowing that they could fight for the win later

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Strava and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Moser are controlling the gap, which is 5 minutes when the breakaway is on the first intermediate sprint, with 100 km to go

After the only climb of the day, the gap has been reduced to 3 minutes with 50 km to go. The bunch has the race controlled but the breakaway won’t give up without a fight

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-003.jpg

20 km to go and the gap is 1’20. An important factor is now the wind.´Is very high (over 40 km/h) and lateral. That might cause splits in the bunch

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-004.jpg

In the 10 km arc, some riders crash. One of them is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Polivoda, Nemiroff’s sprinter. Not everything is bright for the Ucranian team. Also riders like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Aru and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Formolo had been involved in a earlier crash

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-005.jpg

The breakaway is reduced to only four riders, as neither as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Siriwardena, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Haugard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Campenaerts couldn’t keep up with the rhythm in the front. 6 km, 44 seconds for the leaders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-006.jpg

The escapees are about to be caught, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Strava leading out the pack. 5 km, 23 seconds

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-007.jpg

We have a split in the group. Around 20 riders in the front, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin is not there. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prp.png Machado are the only GC rider up there

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-008.jpg

Insane rhythm that Hansen is putting now. The leading group is now of 7 riders

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Hansen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Fonseca, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Kluge

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Hansen’s rhythm was so high, that when he started to launch the sprint, his team-mate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Fonseca blew, causing a gap with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger close on his wheel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-010.jpg

With 700 metres to go, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Hansen is still first, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri is about to overtake his team-mate. No one seems to be able to match Guarnieri’s speed

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-011.jpg

300 metres and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri still has a comfortable lead, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen are coming faster

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri is clearly fading now, but right now it seems that he will be able to hold on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen is out of the battle, as is any other rider

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Enger wins!! Incredible sprint by the Norwegian to take the win from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri’s hands. So close for the Italian...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-014.jpg

Vesely and Groenewegen are third and fourth

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-015.jpg

Another Strava rider who loses in a photo-finish; Houle takes fifth from Hansen in the last metres

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-016.jpg

There is a gap between Phinney/Machado and Pluchkin, the first of the rest of the bunch, but it’s unclear if the jury will consider it. Anyway, nothing will change in the top of GC.

At the end no gaps were given

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-017.jpg

Aleksandr Pluchkin is the winner of 2017 Tirreno-Adriatico!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-7-018.jpg

Pluchkin also wins Points and KoM jersey, while Lecuisinier wins U25 and Ticos, a wildcard team, wins the Teams classification
