Tirreno - Adriatico - Stage 5

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-000.jpg

Fifth stage in Tirreno, and after yesterday’s finish in Terminillo, the GC is more clear, with 3 riders who will fight for the win. Phinney leads with 5 seconds on Pluchkin, and 20 on Madrazo. Today we have a hilly stage where Phinney must gain some time to be able to keep the lead after Prato di Tivo tomorrow

In the first km we have a climb. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Ricardo van der Velde is the first to reach the summit

Today we have a 5-rider breakaway, with the first four riders in the previous KoM + a late attacker

The race is on fire now in Poggio San Romualdo. RBC and Pendleton’s are pulling really hard in this climb, and the group has been reduced to around 60 riders. Meanwhile, in the front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Van der Velde is again the first in this climb, and now is the virtual leader of KoM classification

The gap is 3 minutes with 75 km to go

25 km to go, and the group is about to start the first of two climbs to Crispiero while the breakaway have just over a minute gap

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-005.jpg

As yesterday, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski is the first to attack. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin goes quickily on his wheel, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney seems to let his domestiques to control the gap

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin is working well with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski, and both have a 20 seconds gap to Phinney’s group, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Rosskopf is doing an incredible effort for his leader

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Rosskopf is the real MVP! He has reeled the leading duo all by himself, and now we have a 7 men group in front with a 1’20 gap to the next group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-008.jpg

When the final climb starts - remember that the stage finish after the descent - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski goes again. This eliminates pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Rosskopf, and now is a one-on-one battle for the stage win and GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-009.jpg

Control Team showing their colors Pfft

Oooh pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo in troubles! The Spaniard is suffering and has been dropped from the group where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin is pulling after pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski ended his attack

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin's rhythm is high enough to avoid any attacks but not so fast to drop anyone else. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prp.png Machado has been able to join the leading group and even pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Herklotz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier are closing in and have already caught pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney is now the big favourite to take the stage win and increase his lead due to bonus. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates is leading the group in the descent with the American on his wheel. The gap to Madrazo ‘s group remains in 40 seconds

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-012.jpg

We are now under the “Flamme Rouge”... problems for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney? He has lost a couple of places in the group and doesn’t look good for the sprint

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates opens his sprint and with the downhill he is in the best place.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin is on his wheel, trying to overtake him, and Dombrowski is out of the win. Right now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin would take the race lead with the bonus seconds. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney needs to overtake his fellow countrymen to retainh is lead, unless the Moldovan wins

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-014.jpg

100 metres and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates is about to win the stage. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin has not given up but it’s almost impossible to do anything now. And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney is too far from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski to be able to take third place

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-015.jpg

Adam Yates wins in Castelraimondo ahead of Aleksandr Pluchkin, who is the new race leader

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-016.jpg

Dombrowski finish third and Phinney fourth. Deception for the race leader, who has lost his lead due to bonus seconds that usually would have been his

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-017.jpg

Machado and Dekker finish in the same group, in fifth and sixth. After yesterday’s disaster for both riders, it’s good for them to be with the best in this stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-018.jpg

Herklotz, Lecuisinier and Madrazo will lose around 50 seconds today. Major step-back for the Spanish rider

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-019.jpg

At 1’40 arrive Guldhammer, Tenorio, Wellens and Barguil

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-020.jpg

And finally a big group with riders like Alarcon, Morton or Denifl finish with a 3’30 lose

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-5-021.jpg

We have the confirmation that Aleksandr Pluchkin is the new leader with 7 seconds of advantage to Taylor Phinney. Also, the jury has decided that between Lecuisinier and Madrazo there was enough gap, so Madrazo loses another 13 seconds, which puts him 1’31 behind Pluchkin.

Pluchkin now leads all classifications; GC, Points and KoM
