Tirreno - Adriatico - Stage 4
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-000.jpg

Fourth stage in this Tirreno-Adriatico, and it’s time for Monte Terminillo. Taylor Phinney will have to defend his lead against the best climbers in the race, like Madrazo or Pluchkin, and both have some time to overcome. Will be a fun climb for sure

We have a rainy day in Italy, so watch out for crashes in the descents.

Seven riders form the BotD

We have a little crash in the bunch, and we see a Jayco rider in the ground. Is he... oh no he is...pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Lachlan Morton has crashed again. What a terrible week for him.

With Morton’s crash we’ve missed when the breakaway fought for the KoM in Le Arette. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Bevin was the first this time

Cat.2 KoM

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Boom will keep his KoM leader jersey unless pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney wins the stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-004.jpg

Absolutely nothing has happened in the last 70 km. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton, and the other fallens re-joined the bunch, except for a couple of riders who had to retired, like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Alaphilippe or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Latour. Both RBC and Gazelle have been working in the front to not the let the breakaway a big advantage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-005.jpg

The last intermediate sprint came in the exact moment that the bunch caught the BotD, with 25 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-006.jpg

This is only an uphill section a few km before the climb starts, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski has decided to attack now. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Denifl tried to follow the American, but the high rhythm of Gazelle’s domestiques denied him the chance

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-007.jpg

In the little descent before starting Monte Terminillo, another crash happens in the bunch. This time is a big one involving lots of riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-008.jpg

Let’s see which riders are involved... pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Hirt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prp.png Machado... Terrible news for all this riders, who have crashed in the most critical moment. At least no one has to abandon the race. That’s something.

This has left the leader’s group in something around 40 riders at the foot of Terminillo

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-009.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo attacks with 14 km to go! He overtakes pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski, who tries to hang on his wheel, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney is suffering to close the gap

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski have already opened a 40-second gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney’s group, and the American is desperate looking for help to catch the Spaniard

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-011.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio is on big troubles! He’s been dropped from Phinney’s group too early.

Both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin looks to be perfect, without any injuries, as they are close to bridge the gap to Phinney’s group, together with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Herklotz. Still 10 km to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-013.jpg

“Aleksandr the Great” is on fire, and all by himself, once he joined pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney’s group, he started to pull and has reeled pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo and Dombrowski

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-014.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo doesn’t want this to be the outcome, and attacks again. Only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin can follow him, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney cracks

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-015.jpg

The gap has quickily grow around the minute, when the leading duo is under the 5km banner. And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin is suffering!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-016.jpg

Big problems now for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney, who has been dropped from the group who’ll fight for third place in the stage, although he is still the virtual leader, as the gap with Madrazo/Pluchkin is “only” 1 minute

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo is riding now very conservative, seeing that he would need at least one more minute to take the GC lead. I guess he’ll wait to the final km to try to win as much time as possible, but now it looks weird. 2 km to go now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-018.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo starts his sprint! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin is done, and the Spaniard will win the stage for sure. But will it be enough to take the race lead?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-019.jpg

For sure he won’t. He hasn’t even taken enough time to overtake pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin.

Angel Madrazo wins in Monte Terminillo!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-020.jpg

Pluchkin is second today. Incredible after he crashed before Terminillo. He would have won if not for the crash. He’ll move at least to the second place in GC. He’ll have to wait until pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney arrives.

Dombrowski takes third ahead of Alarcon, roughly under the minute to Madrazo

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-021.jpg

Lecuisinier and Phinney arrive fifth and sixth, around 1’10 after Madrazo. We’ll need to wait for the offical result to see who is the race leader; Phinney or Pluchkin

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-022.jpg

Guldhammer arrives a few second later than Phinney in seventh. Great day for him

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-023.jpg

Herklotz finish eight, almost 3 minutes after Madrazo. It’s a hard hit for the young German, but he has to grow yet, and will be stronger in the future. Anyway, this is a great result for him. In his same group, also arrive Barguil, Yates, De La Cruz, and a few second behind, Kritskiy, Wellens, Denifl and Tenorio

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-024.jpg

And six minutes is the lose for Dekker and Machado, two of the affected by crashes today

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-025.jpg

But the one who will the most disappointed today is Morton. Eight minutes he has lost, but it doesn’t matter now. This race “hates” him. At least his team has the TTT win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-4-026.jpg

We have now confirmation from the jury that Taylor Phinney will remain as the race leader. He has a 5-second advantage on Aleksandr Pluchkin and 20 seconds on Angel Madrazo. And we still have one hilly and one mountain stage left
