Tirreno - Adriatico - Stage 3
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-000.jpg

Welcome to stage 3 of Tirreno-Adriatico. After a TTT and a flattish stage, the GC riders will fight in this hilly course. With no top puncheurs here, the stage win will surely go to one of the GC riders.

After LOTS of attacks in the first 50 km of the stage, finally a breakaway is allowed by the bunch.

In the first climb of the day, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Boom is the first to pass through it. This puts him just one point behind KoM lead

In the intermediate sprint, Boom again is the first

With 70 km to go, we have the first crash of the race... and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Lachlan Morton is involved! Around 15 riders are involved too, and sadly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Minguez Ayala is forced to abandon the race. Riders like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Ignatenko or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Cort Nielsen have crashed also

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-004.jpg

Horrible race so far for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton. After losing half a minute on his own team-mates in the TTT, this crash might eliminate him for any GC hopes he had. Gazelle and RBC are pulling from the bunch, looking to not let the Aussie re-join them

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-005.jpg

This situation has led the bunch to already catch the breakaway, except for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Sergis, when we are in the final categorised climb before the finish one.

Sergis pass first in that climb. After him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Boom, who attacked again to take the lead in the KoM, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Chamorro

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton was able to connect with a couple of team-mates (Canty and Porte) in the descent, which made him finally re-join the group. But even if the crash hasn’t affected him, he must have lost lots of energies

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Sergis pass first in the final intermediate sprint of the day, when we got some bad news. Just before the sprint, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ssc.png Denifl have crashed. Big bad luck for both Aegon and SPAR, especially for the former, as SPAR is a wilcard team

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-008.jpg

And there it goes pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Taylor Phinney! With pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prp.png Machado and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski on his wheel. With 21 km to go, the American makes his move

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-009.jpg

But Gazelle has a dominant team for this type of stages, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Kruijswijk brings them quickily to the group. This is looking good for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo.

And in the next uphill terrain goes again pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney. He has brought pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prp.png Machado with him, and the group seems to be unable to reeled them

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier sees this and also attacks. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski tries to follow him but he can’t. In the group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo is pulling, with his “guard” being down

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney has destroyed pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prp.png Machado in the descent and the first part of the flat terrain that leads to final climb, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier has almost caught him

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney still has a 30 seconds advantage when he starts the climb to Chieti, with 3 km at 5%, but there’s one flat km in the middle. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prp.png Machado and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski have been caught and will have big problems to stay in the group. Big kudos to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton, who despite the crash and the pursuit is still on the group and looking good. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Kritskiy can’t say so, and he’s about to be dropped from the 25-men group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-013.jpg

Once pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ludvigsson has stopped pulling, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer attacks. And with him go pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Hirt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin. A few metres behind there are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo, who must have been bad placed in the start of the climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-014.jpg

Final km for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney, and he is set to win the stage. He has a 33-second gap in the Flamme Rouge to a 6-rider group, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Hirt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisiner. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates have been dropped recently, and both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo are in big troubles. Both are over a minute behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Phinney is celebrating very early but he has the win in the bag

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-016.jpg

And finally pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Taylor Phinney wins in Chieti! And he also takes the race lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Jan Hirt finish second, ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Rasmus Guldhammer

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Pluchkin finish in the same time as Hirt

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-019.jpg

Bad day for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Tenorio and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Madrazo, who have lost most of the GC hopes today, after losing 1’30 to Phinney

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-020.jpg

And here comes a rather big group with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Morton, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pnd.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Wellens, which is led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Siskevicius just under the 2 minutes barrier. You can say that Morton has saved the day, with all he has been going through today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/prp.png Machado has been dropped from that group, and the last GC rider to finish the stage is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Dekker. Even more unluckier than Morton, as he crashed in the “hot zone” of the stage, making his comeback impossible. Four minutes is his lose

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Tirreno/Tirreno-3-022.jpg

Now Phinney leads GC with almost one minute on Herklotz, Guldhammer and Hirt. His biggest rivals for the GC win, Pluchkin and Madrazo, are 1’15 and 1’50 behind him. RBC manager will be really happy with his performance
