Tour of Qatar - Stage 6

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_000.jpg

And the traditional epilogue will end this week of racing! After a week of waiting, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coppel, Fielder and Zmorka lead a list of time-trialists impatient to make their mark on this race! As for the GC aspect, numbers 1 and 2 should be fairly certain as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley has dominated and has 20 seconds lead on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift. Who is also fairly safe. There may be an option for a few riders to contest the top 3, though pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb still has 11 seconds on the next rider, Avelino. But below that there could be some shuffling, especially with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard as a very strong prologue rider compared to other sprinters who will want to move up today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_001.jpg

Due to his crash, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Dal Col starts off early today, it takes only 4’26 for him to complete the course and gives up a good benchmark for the remaining riders today, especially as neither pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Yatsevich, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Hepburn nor pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Stoltz can beat him early on, although pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Golovash does equal his time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Gonzalez Salas is the first big time trialist who hasn’t lost major time still but he doesn’t have it in him today and finishes 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Sütterlin can’t do it either and misses out by 3 seconds in fourth place already. Must be a pretty bad day for him given one of the three riders in front is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Rajapakshage, as well as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Dal Col and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Golovash.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_004.jpg

The pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Jayco strategy seems to be to throw time-trialists at a wall and hope they stick. There’s 4 of their Australians in the top 10 when pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Durbridge sets off but he falls short by a lone second in third for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_005.jpg

The Aussies here must have become a bit confused with time zones, Australia Day was two days ago, not today! Still pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Howson takes third place as well and adds 1 more Australian in the top 10, 1 second behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Golovash and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Dal Col, who must be pretty surprised by how things are going so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Malori finally does it, snatching the lead by a mere second from his teammate and compatriot!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_007.jpg

Hellas champ pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Vlatos has some difficulties with his bike but still scores 3rd place again a single second off the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_008.jpg

One of the three biggest favourites today, Zmorka graces the course with fine form but can’t quite steal the lead, finishing second by a fraction of a second.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_009.jpg

His German teammate Fiedler is on the course just after but takes the new fourth place, again missing out by 1 second as many riders have before, something simple like the speed off the ramp, a moment’s hesitation on a corner or a slight difference in bike position can be everything today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kittel is the very next name to set off but he loses a few seconds, enough to only be 9th provisionally today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Schädlich crashed yesterday and maybe that’s affecting him a little? He’s only 16th place today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coppel sets off in his splendid National Championships jersey and well, he rides splendidly as well! His cornering is perfect and he exhibits power, stealing the lead by a full 4 seconds!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Hansen follows on from the Frenchman and and maybe benefits from his slipstream a little, since he finishes 4th on equal time with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Malori, a strong performance from the Dane!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard is the last stage contender and he’s also 7th in the GC with potential aspirations for the top 5 or even a podium! He only manages 18th, 10 seconds down, maybe not benefitting from having to sprint the last 5 days unlike other favourites for the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_015.jpg

6th place pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand takes 24 seconds to complete the route, meaning he’ll drop below pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard but no further, he still has potential to move up though, so the Swede can be pretty satisfied with that performance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Ciolek is a poor time-trialist but has sprinted well to make the top 5 now. Unfortunately for him, he loses 36 seconds on a day that was always going to be bad, dropping behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard, who makes the top 5 but also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_017.jpg

Avelino has had a great tour sprinting but today rides badly and loses 28 seconds. This makes him lose his GC position to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard but he maintains his top 5 over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand by just 1 second!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb needs to finish in 4’46 or less to keep his podium safe from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard and he finishes in, exactly 4’46! We’ll have to wait for the commissaries to decide who gets a podium finish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift know his position is largely secure so he can take in the atmosphere of Doha a little, he does still manage to finish with 24 seconds of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coppel though, meaning pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley just has to come in within 44 seconds – something less than 10 riders have failed to accomplish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_020.jpg

After 5 consecutive podiums, 4 in second place, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley finally can ride through the streets of Doha, he can’t go too slow but he can soak in one of the few achievements that has eluded him year after year.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley crosses the line in 73rd extending his lead over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift by a single second and winning the Tour of Qatar!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_6_021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley can accept his boquet of flowers on the podium! He won through just being more consistent than any other sprinter, a really great performance from the Kiwi.

There’s a final piece of tension to be resolved now, it transpires that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard has in fact stolen the podium off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb by less than a second! It’s a heartbreak for the German but it just shows that you need to be able to ride prologues as well as sprint here.
