Tour of Qatar - Stage 5

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_000.jpg

Final chance for the sprinters and many still haven’t scored a win yet! No wind today for once so hopefully we’ll see some good organisation. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley will look to back up yesterday’s win, or at least keep near the front to keep his jersey secure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_001.jpg

The break forms just in time for the first sprint. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Vermeltfoort has been aggressive this race and well placed in the GC thanks to bonuses, inching up slightly more by being the only one interested in the sprint, the entire break, in the order they cross the line is:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Vermeltfoort
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Hofland
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Kumara
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Nooytens

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_002.jpg

Chute! After four days of clean racing this is not a nice moment. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff capitulates over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Sbaragli, taking pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Golovash down and leaving many riders no chance but to hit them as well! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand also is brought down, as well as time-trial specialists pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Gonzalez Salas and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Schädlich and a few domestiques. The worst looking man however is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Echarri who is holding his collarbone tightly and may have to abandon.

Still 40km left so they can return to the pack if they aren’t injured, as at the moment a few pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Moser domestiques trade off turns easily, with even pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Veseley willing to spend some time in the wind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_003.jpg

3 more seconds for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Vermeltfoort! At least he can call this day a success as their gap nears 1 minute. This moves him up to 12th in the GC as well, although he’ll probably get knocked down by some sprinters by the end of today.

Most crash victims returned to the pack behind, excluding pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Echarri who climbed into the broom wagon and a few domestiques who were slow to get up and look like they just want an easy ride to the finish today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Hofland decides to strike off on his own! There’s still 13km left but somehow the break has kept their gap at 1’20 despite pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Iberia chipping in as the peloton raised the pace. The Dutchman is the weakest flat rider in the group though, so we’ll have to see how the others respond.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Hofland is brought back under the 10km banner, interesting though is that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Kumara is now choosing to skip turns, dead tired or for a tactical advantage?!

In the pack it’s all hands on deck! With pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Iberia now chasing full-out! Each of the three teams also has their traditional trains built properly and early this time but are content to wait in the wings for now. Also, Tzortzakis has put Redecker and Hoffman in front of him, maybe with hopes of a repeat of Stage 1.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_006.jpg

With 5km left the break still has 50 seconds! The domestiques swing off now as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Iberia and Project: Africa bring their trains to the front. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Sbaragli and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Howard contest Tzortzakis’ wheel but the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon train is a little messy with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen caught behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift, it’s still better than the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Moser train though which dissipated. However pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley found a home behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Lopez, as the young Colombian tried to bring pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Staeyen onto pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift’s wheel but found his leader blocked by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Ciolek. Avelino, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard are all very well positioned likewise.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_007.jpg

3km left as the break's lead is being shredded quickly! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Nooytens and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Vermeltfoort look like their day is over as the other three press on!

As for the pack, probably one of the more organised days we’ve seen, on the right the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon train takes off with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Sbragali - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff

On the left, Project: Africa are making a bit of a mess of things, their lack of experience as a lead-out train showing as Tzortzakis moving into second position in front of Hoffman. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Howard still chooses this train to follow though and the intrusions of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Brockhoff aren’t helping.

The most popular train dominates the centre of the road however! It consists of; pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Kluge - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Zabel - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb – Avelino - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Ciolek - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley. Then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu contest the Kiwi’s wheel. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Gough, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbeist and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand follow, as well as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Lopez and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Staeyen just off picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Babero swings fast into the final corner and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Hofland lets a little gap form! The Dutchman tries to recover the wheel but needs to close the gap fast, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Kumara is put into a similar situation as well and the other two break members haven’t fully given up yet! There’s still 2km left though and a lot can change, like the peloton hunting them down! Especially as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Kluge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Sbaragli pull off now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_009.jpg

Under the flamme rouge though the break’s dreams are crushed! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard leads them into the final kilometre as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Zabel pulls off with, finally, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb perfectly placed. The Project: Arica train failed but Hoffman somehow found pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb’s wheel so hope is not lost for the team.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift is a little blocked but right up there as well. So too are Avelino and yesterday’s runner-up, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Ciolek! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Staeyen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri try to move up on the right. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley is also up there but surely not as well placed as he would like!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_010.jpg

600 metres to go! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard is still going strong, although pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Ciolek and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff are posing the greatest threats at the moment! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb is steaming forward as well and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley unleashes now that he has a gap! Avelino also kicks off his sprint, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift still waits patiently. It’s not time to count pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Staeyen or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri out either!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard still leads with 200 metres but it’s so close for this final sprint stage! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Ciolek is creeping up alongside him, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift finally releases and is already halfway alongside him! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley is within touch as well! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff fade a little but still go strong! While pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbeist enter the frame! The question is, who wants it most?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_5_013.jpg

It’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift! He and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley were the fastest in the final metres but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift just snatched the stage! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb came back to finish third, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard must be frustrated, to be so close and miss out, at least he still has an, albeit small, chance tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Ciolek is fifth after a strong sprint, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vandebeist came from a long way back to finish sixth. Avelino takes seventh ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff, who was impressive after his crash despite fading. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri takes ninth and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu gets 10th place despite failing to really be involved.
