Tour of Qatar - Stage 3
trekbmc
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_000.jpg

It’s a longer day then yesterday but still a short stage, however it’s weird in that there are some very tiny bumps on the profile, they won’t have an impact, but still. Otherwise similar weather to stage 1 with gusty winds and warm sun. Will Avelino or Tzortzakis take a repeat victory, or will a new name celebrate today? The big three sprinters in the race surely are tired of waiting.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_001.jpg

The attacks to be in the break are ferocious with many teams wanting to be represented, finally four men do establish a lead though:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Feillu
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Vermeltfoort
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Perera
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Franzoi

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Feillu has no trouble taking the premium ahead of the Sri Lankan and the Dutchman. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Franzoi in fourth doesn’t even bother trying to sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_003.jpg

The second sprint is pretty much a carbon copy of the first, except pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Perera is caught out, finishing third this time as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Vermeltfoort moves up behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Feillu. Just 40km left now so we can expect the peloton to start racing!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_004.jpg

The wind has split the pack! About 60 riders are caught out, fortunately no big names are behind, most notable are a couple of specialists for stage 6; pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Stoltz won’t be able to fight for a good GC any more, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Hepburn, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Yatsevich and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Dal Col are having another bad day in the saddle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_005.jpg

Under the 10km banner pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Moser and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon have chased hard and achieved two things, one is to have the break just about caught and the other is that the peloton has split again, leaving just 63 riders in the main group! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbiest was too far back and missed this group, which will ruin his GC aspirations! Otherwise there’s mostly some time-trialists and domestiques pared off the back, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Gonzalez Salas pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Olman the best two time-trialists missing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_006.jpg

Riders are being shelled off the back at an extreme rate but now in the final 5km the city buildings should offer some protection from the wind. As always pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon seem to be most organised, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Iberia has a big numbers advantage with 7 men in the group and 6 at the front but not much organisation yet, banner pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley also has some teammates but no train yet either, while most other sprinters are pretty isolated.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_007.jpg

3km remaining and two trains have dominated the last 2km! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Sbragli pulls pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift into the lead as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Kluge contests him but bad organisation means that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb is second in line and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Zabel has the pole position. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff knew what was going on and strategically got onto the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Iberia train.

Behind those two teams, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Habtom leads the charge of riders trying to get back into contention, who form two lines:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Habtom
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley
Avelino pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Staeyen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu
TzortzakisRoelandts
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrandpcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Ciolek
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Stauffpcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Saber

Behind that a few other sprinters are trying to move forward but it looks like they have too much to overcome, also pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coppel is well positioned with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Festina making the interesting decision to have their final domestique, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Kastrantas protect him instead of their sprinter.

The back of this group is still a steady stream of riders unable to keep up though and more time-trialists have been shed from the back, including:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Sütterlin
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Howson
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Malori
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Durbridge

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_008.jpg

1.5km left! It’s hard to work out if this race is more hectic at the back or the front. At the head, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely launch for their respective sprinters! Although pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Moser have some ground to make up and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb needs to actually get behind his teammate. Especially before pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff gets past him. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen and Roelandts have also kept behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley, then there’s a small gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu.

After that, a larger gap, maybe three lengths to 5 sprinters, led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/pum.png Ciolek, then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri, Tzortzakis, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand. After them, there are gaps everywhere, as this group implodes!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_009.jpg

The flamme rouge is raised overhead as the motorbike tries to get out of the way! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Zabel still leads but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Degenkolb has been disadvantaged by a lack of communication and is sprinting on his own. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley both open up now as well! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen also competes while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff blows up and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu fights to get back level with these guys!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_010.jpg

500 more metres and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift has taken control! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Degenkolb presents the biggest challenge while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen were blocked earlier and can only open up fully now! A couple of sprinters who had a lot of ground to make up are also catching up to the back of this selection, as it seems pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand still haven’t given up, although they surely can’t contest the win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_011.jpg

However pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift just could not be beaten! His team were perfectly organised and it just made the difference for the Brit today! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb was probably stronger on the overall but has to settle for second, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley easily beats pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen to the final podium spot.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff found the legs to keep going, just long enough to hold off a roaring pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri for fifth place. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely score 7th and 8th for their leadout efforts, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard finish off the top 10.

It will be interesting to see where the splits are counted behind, it looks like a group of 21 with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Hansen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard the best prologue riders involved but a second group the same size containing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coppel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Kittel, Zmorka, Avelino, Fiedler, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Vlatos and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Schädlich are close enough that they may be award the same time if the commissaries are feeling kind today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_3_012.jpg

Stage winner pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift smiles to the crowd as he collects the points jersey, he might be happy to move to within 2 seconds of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley’s lead as these two have established a little margin over the rest in the general classification, however he might be quite disappointed at the moment, as the commisaires have decided crazily to decide that all of the top 120 finishers will receive the same time as him, meaning even pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbiest who finishes over 3 minutes later will receive not suffer any time loss.
