It’s a longer day then yesterday but still a short stage, however it’s weird in that there are some very tiny bumps on the profile, they won’t have an impact, but still. Otherwise similar weather to stage 1 with gusty winds and warm sun. Will Avelino or Tzortzakis take a repeat victory, or will a new name celebrate today? The big three sprinters in the race surely are tired of waiting.
The attacks to be in the break are ferocious with many teams wanting to be represented, finally four men do establish a lead though:
Feillu
Vermeltfoort
Perera
Franzoi
Feillu has no trouble taking the premium ahead of the Sri Lankan and the Dutchman. Franzoi in fourth doesn’t even bother trying to sprint.
The second sprint is pretty much a carbon copy of the first, except Perera is caught out, finishing third this time as Vermeltfoort moves up behind Feillu. Just 40km left now so we can expect the peloton to start racing!
The wind has split the pack! About 60 riders are caught out, fortunately no big names are behind, most notable are a couple of specialists for stage 6; Stoltz won’t be able to fight for a good GC any more, while Hepburn, Yatsevich and Dal Col are having another bad day in the saddle.
Under the 10km banner Moser and Aegon have chased hard and achieved two things, one is to have the break just about caught and the other is that the peloton has split again, leaving just 63 riders in the main group! Vanderbiest was too far back and missed this group, which will ruin his GC aspirations! Otherwise there’s mostly some time-trialists and domestiques pared off the back, with Gonzalez Salas Olman the best two time-trialists missing.
Riders are being shelled off the back at an extreme rate but now in the final 5km the city buildings should offer some protection from the wind. As always Aegon seem to be most organised, while Iberia has a big numbers advantage with 7 men in the group and 6 at the front but not much organisation yet, banner Bewley also has some teammates but no train yet either, while most other sprinters are pretty isolated.
3km remaining and two trains have dominated the last 2km! Sbragli pulls Groenewegen and Swift into the lead as Kluge contests him but bad organisation means that Degenkolb is second in line and Zabel has the pole position. Kristoff knew what was going on and strategically got onto the Iberia train.
Behind those two teams, Habtom leads the charge of riders trying to get back into contention, who form two lines:
Habtom Vesely BewleyAvelino Van Staeyen GrosuTzortzakis Roelandts Coquard Ahlstrand Ciolek Stauff Guarnieri Saber
Behind that a few other sprinters are trying to move forward but it looks like they have too much to overcome, also Coppel is well positioned with Festina making the interesting decision to have their final domestique, Kastrantas protect him instead of their sprinter.
The back of this group is still a steady stream of riders unable to keep up though and more time-trialists have been shed from the back, including:
Sütterlin
Howson
Malori
Durbridge
1.5km left! It’s hard to work out if this race is more hectic at the back or the front. At the head, Zabel, Groenewegen and Vesely launch for their respective sprinters! Although Moser have some ground to make up and Degenkolb needs to actually get behind his teammate. Especially before Kristoff gets past him. Van Stayen and Roelandts have also kept behind Bewley, then there’s a small gap to Grosu.
After that, a larger gap, maybe three lengths to 5 sprinters, led by Ciolek, then Guarnieri, Tzortzakis, Coquard and Ahlstrand. After them, there are gaps everywhere, as this group implodes!
The flamme rouge is raised overhead as the motorbike tries to get out of the way! Zabel still leads but Degenkolb has been disadvantaged by a lack of communication and is sprinting on his own. Swift and Bewley both open up now as well! Van Stayen also competes while Kristoff blows up and Grosu fights to get back level with these guys!
500 more metres and Swift has taken control! Degenkolb presents the biggest challenge while Bewley and Van Stayen were blocked earlier and can only open up fully now! A couple of sprinters who had a lot of ground to make up are also catching up to the back of this selection, as it seems Guarnieri, Coquard and Ahlstrand still haven’t given up, although they surely can’t contest the win.
However Swift just could not be beaten! His team were perfectly organised and it just made the difference for the Brit today! Degenkolb was probably stronger on the overall but has to settle for second, while Bewley easily beats Van Stayen to the final podium spot.
Kristoff found the legs to keep going, just long enough to hold off a roaring Guarnieri for fifth place. Groenewegen and Vesely score 7th and 8th for their leadout efforts, while Grosu and Coquard finish off the top 10.
It will be interesting to see where the splits are counted behind, it looks like a group of 21 with Hansen and Coquard the best prologue riders involved but a second group the same size containing Coppel, Kittel, Zmorka, Avelino, Fiedler, Vlatos and Schädlich are close enough that they may be award the same time if the commissaries are feeling kind today.
Stage winner Swift smiles to the crowd as he collects the points jersey, he might be happy to move to within 2 seconds of Bewley’s lead as these two have established a little margin over the rest in the general classification, however he might be quite disappointed at the moment, as the commisaires have decided crazily to decide that all of the top 120 finishers will receive the same time as him, meaning even Vanderbiest who finishes over 3 minutes later will receive not suffer any time loss.
