Tour of Qatar - Stage 2
trekbmc
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_000.jpg

Similar to yesterday’s stage but shorter at only 120km and only one intermediate sprint, can Tzortzakis double-up again? The organisers have also financed some artificial rain to make the day more exciting, because they know nobody will be on the roadside either way.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_001.jpg

There’s a couple attempts early but the peloton wants to keep things tight for the intermediate sprint, yesterday’s prime combatants pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift and Tzortzakis are the only two interested in the bonuses, as the Brit tries to make up for yesterday by taking the 3 second bonus. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen sneaks up late to take the last second on the front of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_002.jpg

After the sprint a couple riders are allowed free as the peloton relaxes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ayu.png Kemboi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png van Zyl continue yesterday’s theme by providing a two man break today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_003.jpg

The wet weather leads to a crash in the bunch! Unfortunate for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb that lead-out man pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Kluge is down. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Tinkoff with worse luck though as both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Yatsevich and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Dal Col are down. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Hepburn and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Van Baarle also hit the deck as strong time trialists. They do still have 40km to return to the bunch though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_004.jpg

Fast-forward to 7km left where the break’s day is over! Still no organisation from the sprinters yet though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_005.jpg

There’s disorganisation in the peloton and the keen eye of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Hermans spots this and tries to make a break for it!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_006.jpg

Unfortunately for the Belgian, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Habtom spots his wheel and jumps on. Leading pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley to control the peloton. Roelandts and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/jay.png Saber want to take advantage of their train, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand finds himself to the right in the wind with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Guillén in tow.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift have their trains right behind this, although pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift only has one teammate left in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb has both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Maes and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Zabel left.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek are also in picture, as well as a surprisingly large group of cobblists/strong flat men, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Vanmarcke, Senechel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Langeveld, Marycz and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/wha.png Schorn are near the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Habtom pulls off with 1.5km left and it’s been bunched up so many riders are involved! The situation is as follows:

Tzortzakis is notably absent, yesterday’s winner is a few bike lengths out of shot, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb is also surprisingly poorly placed again, there’s time for him to move forward but he will need to find the space and legs to do so.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_008.jpg

1km to left to race! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely struggled to keep the pace high and many riders were able to move forward across the road! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand is well-positioned and takes an early lead, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley decides he isn’t ready to hit the wind and jumps into his wheel. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbiest, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff and Avelino are the ones to present the biggest challenge to the Swede at the current moment though, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu hide behind these guys, not ready to launch their sprints yet.

Roelandts and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen also have clear air in front of them and the latter might have to fight for himself now as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift loses the wheel and is now isolated near the back of the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_009.jpg

Only 500 metres and this race couldn’t be tighter! It’s a real power sprint of who has the most energy left and now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbiest steps into the vacuum claiming the lead although Avelino and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand are basically equal with him. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Howard, if any of them has that final kick left in them they can take the spoils today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_010.jpg

The final 200 metres and actually got closer! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbiest has faded badly, as Avelino, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley are all basically equal! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff also strive to keep in contention!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_011.jpg

Second photofinish in a row! But, it’s Avelino claiming it, magnificent win for the Portuguese! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley’s late lunge grabs second and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu also makes it onto the podium, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek are the next across the line. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen had a mostly invisible in the sprint but slide into 7th and 8th, while a badly faded pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Howard round out the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_2_012.jpg

Hard to predict who will pull on the golden fleece with the two main protagonists from yesterday missing, the calculations reveal that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley and Avelino are on the same time! However on countback the Kiwi gets the honour.
