Welcome to the Tour of Qatar! The sprinters are ready for a tough race in hot weather although the gusty warm wind threatens to turn this into a tough day for echelons, so it’ll be interesting to see how the race plays out!
Particularly Aegon but also some other sprinter’s teams more recently have tried to prevent a break going, although finally just before the sprint Gjølberg and Barbero escape the group, where the Norwegian trumps the Spaniard in the sprint.
In the pack, Degenkolb is the only rider who cares about the remaining bonus second and is surrounded by his team as he puts in a ceremonial sprint to take them unchallenged.
As we approach the final 70km we see some surprises, riders who you would’ve expected to save legs for a lead-out like Vesely, Zabel and Van der Sanden are taking part in the relays to chase the break, who have almost 5 minutes lead now.
No difficulty for Gjølberg again at the second sprint. Just 50km left now but with the peloton increasing the pace these guys are back down to a 3 minute lead now.
This time round a lot more riders in the pack care about the lone second available through Ahlstrand wins the sprint by getting the jump on everybody, while Swift, Degenkolb, Howard, Grosu, Kristoff, Ciolek, Van Stayen and Vanderbiest finished in that order, they can rue the wasted energy but at least they provided a nice preview of their legs for the fans.
At 5km left in a day of quite racing, the break seems to finally be caught, Gjølberg puts in a kick to delay the inevitable but it’s idealistic.
In the pack, most sprinters are near the front but disorganised, only Aegon really has a train with Bovenhuis - Sbaragli - Groenewegen - Swift. Tzortzakis, Ahlstrand and Avelino line up in their wheels while other sprinters fill up the right side of the road.
3km to go and the peloton has organised itself a little bit! By some weird miracle Gjølberg has actually increased his lead but still is very close to being caught. Bovenhuis is gone from the Aegon train but they still have the most control despite Ibera and Moser putting something together now.
The situation is as follows:
Sbaragli Habtom Groenewegen Vesely Bewley Swift VanderbiestTzortzakis Ahlstrand Stauff Van Staeyen Coquard Kluge Guillén Howard Zabel Keukeleire Ciolek Grosu Degenkolb Petit
At the bottom of the picture we see a few riders trying to move up as well in, Kvist, Avelino, Kristoff, Guarnieri, Roelandts and Porsev.
With 1,2km left as we round the final corner Gjølberg is amazingly still holding it! Swift and Bewley are on their final lead-out men, with the New Zealander getting the inside-line. Tzortzakis and Coquard follow the Brit’s wheel, While Vanderbiest and Ahlstrand are the first riders behind the Kiwi. However many riders are still right up there behind them, especially Degenkolb being led forward by Zabel on the inside.
Under the flamme rouge and Gjølberg is suffering as the gap closes quickly! Swift and Bewley begin to leave their lead-out men! The former tailed by Tzortzakis, Coquard, Ahlstrand, Howard and Guillén. While the World Champion only has Vanderbiest marking him. Degenkolb is caught out and nowhere to be seen.
Heartbreak for Gjølberg with only 500 metres left! Vesely surprisingly still leads but Swift, Bewley, Tzortzakis and Vanderbiest pull up alongside! Avelino made a massive effort from far behind and is joining the fray now, while Coquard and Ahlstrand still are in contention but will struggle to get round the others now.
200 metres, Swift takes the lead, Tzortzakis is only a hair behind and Bewley is right there as well! Avelino is actually moving the fastest though and you still can’t count Vanderbiest or Coquard out yet!
It’s a photofinish! Swift and Tzortzakis are dead even at the line! Neither raise their arms though as neither is certain. Behind Bewley has to settle for third, while Coquard and Ahlstrand make an incredibly late effort to steal 4th and 5th off Avelino and Vanderbiest! Ciolek, Guarnieri and Kristoff come from far behind to make up the rest of the top 10.
The commissaires have decided! Tzortzakis steps up onto the podium and raises his arms, the first stage winner of the 2017 Tour of Qatar! Wonderful way for him to start with a new team!
In other news 1 DNF as Usandizaga was dropped as soon as the peloton began to chase the break, obviously not a guy who enjoys flat roads, or anything, really.
