Welcome to the Tour of Qatar! The sprinters are ready for a tough race in hot weather although the gusty warm wind threatens to turn this into a tough day for echelons, so it’ll be interesting to see how the race plays out!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_1_002.jpg

Particularly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon but also some other sprinter’s teams more recently have tried to prevent a break going, although finally just before the sprint pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Gjølberg and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/hug.png Barbero escape the group, where the Norwegian trumps the Spaniard in the sprint.

In the pack, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb is the only rider who cares about the remaining bonus second and is surrounded by his team as he puts in a ceremonial sprint to take them unchallenged.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_1_003.jpg

As we approach the final 70km we see some surprises, riders who you would’ve expected to save legs for a lead-out like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Zabel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Van der Sanden are taking part in the relays to chase the break, who have almost 5 minutes lead now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_1_004.jpg

No difficulty for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Gjølberg again at the second sprint. Just 50km left now but with the peloton increasing the pace these guys are back down to a 3 minute lead now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_1_005.jpg

This time round a lot more riders in the pack care about the lone second available through pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand wins the sprint by getting the jump on everybody, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/ebd.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Van Stayen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbiest finished in that order, they can rue the wasted energy but at least they provided a nice preview of their legs for the fans.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_1_006.jpg

At 5km left in a day of quite racing, the break seems to finally be caught, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Gjølberg puts in a kick to delay the inevitable but it’s idealistic.
In the pack, most sprinters are near the front but disorganised, only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon really has a train with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Bovenhuis - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Sbaragli - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Groenewegen - pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift. Tzortzakis, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand and Avelino line up in their wheels while other sprinters fill up the right side of the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_1_007.jpg

3km to go and the peloton has organised itself a little bit! By some weird miracle pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Gjølberg has actually increased his lead but still is very close to being caught. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Bovenhuis is gone from the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Aegon train but they still have the most control despite pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Ibera and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Moser putting something together now.

The situation is as follows:

At the bottom of the picture we see a few riders trying to move up as well in, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Kvist, Avelino, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri, Roelandts and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tsa.png Porsev.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_1_008.jpg

With 1,2km left as we round the final corner pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Gjølberg is amazingly still holding it! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley are on their final lead-out men, with the New Zealander getting the inside-line. Tzortzakis and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard follow the Brit’s wheel, While pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbiest and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand are the first riders behind the Kiwi. However many riders are still right up there behind them, especially pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb being led forward by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Zabel on the inside.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_1_009.jpg

Under the flamme rouge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Gjølberg is suffering as the gap closes quickly! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley begin to leave their lead-out men! The former tailed by Tzortzakis, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/rbc.png Howard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Guillén. While the World Champion only has pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbiest marking him. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/itd.png Degenkolb is caught out and nowhere to be seen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_1_010.jpg

Heartbreak for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Gjølberg with only 500 metres left! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Vesely surprisingly still leads but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley, Tzortzakis and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbiest pull up alongside! Avelino made a massive effort from far behind and is joining the fray now, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand still are in contention but will struggle to get round the others now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_1_011.jpg

200 metres, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift takes the lead, Tzortzakis is only a hair behind and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley is right there as well! Avelino is actually moving the fastest though and you still can’t count pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbiest or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard out yet!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_1_012.jpg

It’s a photofinish! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/aeg.png Swift and Tzortzakis are dead even at the line! Neither raise their arms though as neither is certain. Behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley has to settle for third, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/spy.png Ahlstrand make an incredibly late effort to steal 4th and 5th off Avelino and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/nem.png Vanderbiest! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/sva.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/akm.png Kristoff come from far behind to make up the rest of the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PT/Qatar/MG17_qatar_1_013.jpg

The commissaires have decided! Tzortzakis steps up onto the podium and raises his arms, the first stage winner of the 2017 Tour of Qatar! Wonderful way for him to start with a new team!

In other news 1 DNF as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/tic.png Usandizaga was dropped as soon as the peloton began to chase the break, obviously not a guy who enjoys flat roads, or anything, really.
