Welcome everyone to the headquarter of Hugo Boss cycling team. We are now ProTour after the most successfull season in the teams history last season. After battling against relegation two seasons ago, IT was a great relief ending 3rd and getting the deserved automatic promotion last year!

Team Hugo Boss is now entering our 5th consequent season in the game. Starting out as a Costa rican team and then slowly shifting our focus over on spain.

For those a bit confused over the teams nationality:
Allthough Hugo Boss is a german brand, the marketing managers of the company agreed to continue the spanish nationality of the team. Considering Hugo Boss is huge other places than germany aswell, no german riders were necessary to keep the sponsors happy.

Hugo Boss will be our main sponsor for the 2017 season. It will be our only major sponsor this year aswell.
ONCE & Eroski will both continue to sponsor us after our fine last year.
Banco Nacional de Costa Rica will also continue their sponsorship. The fact we still got the most promising Costa rican puncheur helped their decision.
Giant are our bike providers.
Sportful are where we get our clothing supplements.

Co-sponsors:

Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles (ONCE)
Eroski
Banco Nacional de Costa Rica
Giant Manufacturing
Sportful

A shift in leadership

After taking the step up to PT it became obvious that we had to replace our leaders. In practice that would mean; hopefully changing out Costa and Kump with two top guns capable of results on the highest level.

It was not going to be an easy task by any means, so its with great delight I can say that we managed to do just that, for in comes; Simone Ponzi and Jose Alarcon! We could not be more pleased on our two new stars.

The leaders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/LBL/MG15_LBL_012.jpg

Simone Ponzi84* Hill, 76 Sprint, 80 AccWage: € 1.200.000

After building around hills the last season, it was only natural for us to continue that focus. Hence why we needet to get one of the best puncheurs around with Ponzi. After his dissapointing season at Kenya, he decidet to work even further on his attributes for the ardennes and we think that will show.

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fb/José_Alarcón.jpg/220px-José_Alarcón.jpg

Jose Alarcon84 Moun, 78 AccWage: € 700.000

Our main focus besides the short hills, are the long hills or rather the mountains. Therefore it was important for us to get a leader for such terraign aswell. The 2014 Vuelta winner is not the best against the clock so we will have to plan him carefully.

After promotion to PT and not knowing which rider we would end up with, setting goals would obviously not be an easy task. So that there would be some misses is okay. Winning TdF with Alarcon is so unlikely that we might not even send him there.
As the other goals concerned, they might be achieved thanks to ponzi. The top 10 will obviously be tough, but atleast we feel pretty safe about staying up, which is the more important bit.

If we compare this years squad with last years, you will notice that the difference is quite small. There's obviously one big difference, and thats the division swap. Which meant we had to invest in bigger leaders like; Alarcon for Costa and Ponzi for Kump. Besides that, we got rid of some of our experienced guys like Valverde, Marcato and Ventoso and replaced them with some new blood eg. Ruiz and Silva. Super domestique last season for us, Roy Jans also had to go in the Kump deal. Although some strength is lost what secondary riders is concerned, some of our guys also took an important step in the right direction from last year to now. Most noticeable are probably Carapaz and Slagter, whom we both will expect more from this year.

Giro win within reach?

After a pretty anticlimatic season opener for Alarcon in Tirreno, our hopes
werent too high for a later Giro success. Combined with the constant underperformances by Ponzi, it wasnt looking too good in terms of ranking and predicted season scoring.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/PTHC/Pais%20Vasco/PVS6%2020.jpg

Ponzi finally delivers - and brings us our first PT-win in the process!

Then, it all looked to turn around. It all started with Stage 6 and the final stage of Pais Vasco. Ponzi won and grabbed our first PT-win, aswell with a solid 3rd place in the GC. A result which looked to have a much bigger impact than to what it only did in the rankings.

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/0a/Giro_d%27Italia_logo.svg/1200px-Giro_d%27Italia_logo.svg.png

In a much better mood than before, we then head into the Giro for the second time. This team with a much stronger setup and the actual pre-race favourite. But could Alarcon and his handpicked team live upto such pressure?

Roster:
Jose Alarcon69847366717473505978796666
Richard Antonio Carapaz69807172717677505664716172
Aberlardo Ablenado67786772737777525165596472
Jesús Herrada66757374727270546569716473
Mario Gonzalez Salas70576080747667606154786180
Miguel Angel Benito68757073727173515661676273
Javier Aramendía71606777706972525862635877
Pim Ligthart 72545878726668607074696678

And the giro couldnt have started off in a better way - with Lighart taking a suprise 4th in the prolouge. Alarcon also started of nicely, considering his abillities in the less mountainious routes. He did well to limit his losses to around the minute mark until the first mountain stage.

Week 2 and stage 8 was when it all kicked off! 7 kms from the penultimate climb of the day, he sensed some weakness in his competition and took off! Nobody came close to following him there and he took the maglia rosa with a commanding lead aswell!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi8-19.jpg

Alarcon adding to his tally of Giro stagewins

With good help from his team and the cooperation with main rival Peter Velits his gap to his rivals massively increased over the next two mountain stages - which for the record, he also won!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi11-13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2017/Races/GTM/Girdi/girdi10-9.jpg

1 - Alarcon and Velits, sharing the same interest. 2 - Ablenado tearing the field apart and delivers Alarcon in position for another massive stage win.

It wasnt until the 3rd week and the 15th stage we would see the first sign of weakness from Alarcon and Hugo Boss. It was likely the combination of the struggle of both parties which lead to a quite significant time loss to current 3rd overall, Lachlan Morton! The signs of weakness continued to show on the next hilly stage, where he luckily got some help from Carapaz and managed to finnish in the same group as the rest of the contenders.

With 3 tough mountain stages left and the absloute queen stage to survive aswell. We cannot take the maglia rosa for granted and the team definetely need to show up, like they did so well at the start of the second week. Otherwise the gap of 4'52 and 6'03 to Velits and Morton, could come down quickly!

With 4 stages and 3 decisive ones remaining, we're in for quite the show!
