Tour of Northern Europe Stage 7
trekbmc
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_021.jpg

200 kilometres through the hills of Southern Norway will decide this race pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Kluge has 32 seconds on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Gusev and 1’27 on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet plus plenty of superior puncheurs to the German with a deficit around the 2 minute mark, it’s anybody’s race to win at this point!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_001.jpg

Already the stage is off to a surprising start, as only 1 rider wants to be in the break, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys! Given he’s too far back in the GC to pull off a long range coup and he’s better off going for the stage from the pack, it seems like he must be racing for KOM points today, although he needs every point available today to just tie for the jersey, as well as one point from the sprint tomorrow to win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_002.jpg

There’s a crash in the pack and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom caught up in the carnage, although it’s unclear whether or not he actually hit the deck or just got stuck behind, either way his teammates drop back for him and he returns swiftly

More seriously pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Lampaert is forced to abandon due to the crash.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_003.jpg

In the end there is some more interest in the break however, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys dominates the first KOM sprint the group contains:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Martin
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif_aut.png Eibegger
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Schlechter
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Boroš
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png De Gendt

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_004.jpg

Crash for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Wisniowski! He must’ve been too far back in the pack as no other big names are down. Fortunately he makes it back to the pack without any delay.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_005.jpg

KOM leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Bovenhuis leaves the pack to protect his lead. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad_uae.png Khalifa also attacks but can’t keep clear of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_006.jpg

In the end however the chase led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Pokerstars and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kenya means that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Bovenhuis is caught with 64km left, without scoring a single point. Ahead, the break only holds a 2’48 lead now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_007.jpg

With 60km left the pack splits, only 60 riders make the split, there’s a couple riders in the top 20 of the GC on the wrong side of it, including pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vanspeybrouck who has a flat at the wrong time, as well as:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Stallaert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Bagdonas
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Nolf
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Feng
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Walsleben

Up front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb is surprisingly the one setting the pace for the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_008.jpg

20km left on the penultimate climb and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Martin dives past pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys to take full points - the first climb today that the Belgian hasn’t won. Now they only have a 1 minute lead on the pack though. Although now these two break away from their companions with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif_aut.png Eibegger as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_009.jpg

These three still have a 1 minute gap with 6km left, but they can still see the pack on the steepest bits of the final climb, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Pokerstars still sets the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_010.jpg

Now however pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Mohoric lights up the race with an attack! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Tsatevich mark him immedietly but the rest of the pack sees no GC threat and lets them go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_011.jpg

They reach the break and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski goes again with 5km left! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Mohoric tries to follow but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys blocks him as the Belgian chases on his own, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Tsatevich has been dropped by the extreme pace!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom explodes out of the pack! This is a serious move, given he’s 2’09 off the lead, 42 seconds off the podium and only 17 seconds out of the top 5! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Trentin also decides he doesn’t want to miss out but can’t escape the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski takes the final KOM points with 3.5km left, it should flatten out from here! He has 20 seconds on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Mohoric, who has another 20 seconds to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys and he has another 20 seoconds to the other attackers, who pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom has caught, finally they have 30 seconds on the peloton, so pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom is provisionally 4th in the GC!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_014.jpg

As the pack has 3km left they seem to be falling apart, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski has 1’40 on them and it only looks like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Mohoric can challenge him, still 20 seconds down, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom is now provisionally third place, 47 seconds ahead of the pack!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Trentin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Saber and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb control the pack, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Kluge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Gusev are now starting to move a little bit backwards!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_015.jpg

Final kilometre for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski! The gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Mohoric is still at a stable 20 seconds and he looked like the only rider who can still ruin this for the Pole!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_016.jpg

There’s no stopping pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski though as he takes a spectacular win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_017.jpg

2nd place for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Mohoric, he raced well but was outfoxed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_018.jpg

With 1.4km left for the pack, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Wisniowski launches for his own GC gains! He gets a decent gap before pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman reacts and following him is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Holloway and more importantly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet who has left this very late!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom finishes third and starts the clock now! He takes 4 bonus seconds and needs 38 more on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet to make the podium! Behind him pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Tsatevich and best man from the break pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Martin takes 4th and 5th place a pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif_aut.png Eibegger loses a bit of ground to finish 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_7_020.jpg

The late attacks from the peloton didn’t really manage to gain any ground more important is the time gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom then and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Lutsenko stops the clock 41 seconds after the Dutchman! Meaning pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom moves up to third in the GC by just 3 seconds!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Holloway takes 8th before pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Wisniowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet who really left everything too late today, more so than the rest of the peloton. As he drops to 4th while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Kluge finishes 25th safely in the pack and secures the GC win barring a disaster tomorrow.
